Are there any other orchid topics you want me to do an in-depth video on?

Hi Dave, your plants do look healthy. I put my cattleyas, dendrobiums, broughtonias, and shade vandas directly onto trees in my yard and they do quite well. I also use coconut husks in homemade wire baskets to mount cattleyas and they are quite happy, too. I'm in Jamaica, by the way. Your dendrobiums are spectacular. Looking forward to seeing more videos.🙏

Great feedback! Where do you get the coconut husks?
@Ellie-wh6mi6 ай бұрын
@@DavesOrchidOasis It's sold dried at our local Coconut Board in Kingston. Alternatively, when I buy jelly coconuts for the water and jelly, I leave them in the sun to dry and then use them to mount my orchids.

.....New subscriber.....I agree Dave,... If I could,... I would mount them all, ...I use cedar and cypress......I either mount them or grow in lava, gravel.etc......I love your collection.....I think alot of growers cant get past the soil in a pot mentality when it comes to orchids.....the media is only to anchor them in the pot till they attach themselves in it...Great show!

hey Dave, I'm a huge fan of mounted orchid too..the cholla wood comes from cactus plant. As the plant matures it grows that wood inside for structure and support.

I totally agree with you Dave. I was losing many of my potted cattleyas due to roots rot and, as soon as I mounted them, they perked up 🤗😍

Welcome to the orchid KZbin world 🤗. Yes I agree with mounting what you can especially in the Florida environment. With a few exceptions some orchids I find just don’t enjoy it as much and growing inside vs outside is different too. I liked and subscribe I always try and help out fellow KZbinrs 🤗 also your collection looks awesome look forward to seeing more of it!

Hi there! Yes, mounting is natural, and I hang my orchids under my conifer because it gives the best shade and keeps the orchids fungus free. Cholla (choya) is a cactus that is native to parts of California, Texas, Mexico and other deserts. I enjoyed seeing your spectacular mount orchids and basket orchids😌🙌💖

I agree to a degree. As a socal outdoor grower mounting is great for many reasons.my main reason is you don't have to repot every two years,if you use a good mount.dendrobium do well mounted here with the addition of moss tied around the roots.the exception for me is dendrobium kingianum and speciosum types.

Over the last year or two people had gifted us big box store orchids and they were never really happy stuffed in their little moss filld cups with their roots rotting away. A few weeks ago I got off my butt and put them in very ventilated tabletop containers with bark only and they instantly responded with new foliage growth. The one was on the brink with so many dead roots but it looks like it will make it.

FYI....cholla is from cactus. Enjoyed your video. I'm in s.e. FL. I've found that my dendrobiums grow well in self-watering pots with lava rock as medium.

Hi Dave I have all my orchids in baskets with coconut husk and I use bark and lava rocks because I live in Cali. summers are hot and no rain and they are doing fine. Do you recommend something better to grow them with this weather?

As long as you water enough it will be fine

Hey Dave Iim new subsciber ❤ to your channel. Im so happy i found your channel my problem is right now that I have a white moon or moth orchid and they're is two of them gifted to me by my sisters in honor and as a memorable to my 15 yr old son who was suddenly and very pain staking sadly killed in an tragic sidexside ATV accident last May 21st 2023. 😢 💔... I have these two orchids and unfortunately they were covered in what looks like medium of soil moss very little bark. The tops are vibrant green well i went to repot them and I smelled mold and sure enough they're was root rot. I removed all the infected tissue and rot i could see. I cleaned it with hydrogen peroxide a drop of unscented natural soap i also rinsed it in regular filtered water. I have soaked it in a black tea bath to help it with some antioxidants im letting it air dry completely. Now im just lost 😅 rather do the sphag and bag similar method or just mount it and see what happens I dont really have the money to spend to buy root hormone so i do have garlin honey cinnamon powder and sticks. Anyway if you could please please order some advice on how to save these babies i would greatly appreciate it thanks for making these videos and your help. ❤ Also i live in a rural area in apartments in southern WV. If that helps

I've mounted on Beech but that degrades in a year or 3 but it looks good, doesn't harm the plant, same with Birch wood and looks even better. European Oak can be used but you need core wood. When I started I made the mistake of using Robinia bark (Pseudo acacia) looks the same as Cork but it is very very toxic and kills slowly, all orchids mounted that way died and i lost 50 big plants

Hi Dave, I agree as a person who tends to overwater, I want to mount some of my cattleyas. One question is when should I take them out of the pot? Should I wait until next spring? Some of my cattleyas have a few new roots right now. Thanks, James
@DavesOrchidOasis6 ай бұрын
tough call. They don't love being repotted this time of year but you should be ok. Do NOT report bifoliate types. They will die. It might be best to wait until spring and keep them out of the rain until then. Maybe soak once a week.
@denisesorchidparadise14116 ай бұрын
it all depends on your environment, if I lived in Florida I would have them all mounted to palm trees but I don't so, I do what I have to do, and they having been doing ok for 10 years now the ones in baskets and mounts take an extreme amount of work when in doors for 6 months of winter with forced air heating~!
