Trisk lands and Verge lands i like them

Interesting. I’m much MORE likely to mulligan when on the play, as since I don’t have that extra card coming, it is more likely that I, for example, miss a 3rd land drop, or just that a sketchy hand doesn’t work out.

Had an interesting chat in the team discord about using the hypergeometric calculator to weigh mulligan choices. I had tried calculating it out to turn four to decide on a keep, but my buddy pointed out that after drawing 7 cards I have different information...

The "no swamp in hand" issue is problematic for me. When I keep that hand and spend the next 12 turns trying to draw a swamp, I remember that. When I draw a swamp on turn 1 or 2 I spend more time thinking about what my options are play wise and I don't tend to weigh it as heavily. I don't mind keeping a 2 land hand but if I'm cut off from one of my sources I almost never keep.

Mulligans is my worst aspect of play. I hate taking them!
@hintofinsanity13 сағат бұрын
If you use the hypergeometric calculator to simulate the stoat being a carrot cake instead, is increases the % chance of hitting that swamp by turn 4 to over 90% while also protecting you on turn two and three. Which really demonstrates why carrot cake is such a dominate card in the format.
@Bazingahhhh14 сағат бұрын
One thing I dont understand at 20:00 is that you first say you are less likely to mulligan on the play because you don’t want to be down to 6 cards vs 8 of your opponent, and 1 minute later you say when you are on the draw you are more likely to keep because you get to see an extra card. Isn’t that contradictory?
@limitedlevel-ups13 сағат бұрын
Yeah I used “more likely to keep” too broadly here. On the play, I’m more likely to keep just in general But, if the reason the hand is sketchy/borderline is you’re missing something specific, I’m more likely to keep that sort of hand on the draw than the play
@Bazingahhhh12 сағат бұрын

Then I don't understand why in the Dreamdew example you don't keep this hand (on the draw) even though the probability of hitting a 2- or 3-drop is the same as hitting a black source in the Stout example. Your explanation is that the hand is really bad if you don't hit a low cost card, but the Stout hand is also quite bad without black mana. So... is the difference that the worst case scenario is much worse?
@limitedlevel-ups10 сағат бұрын
@@jestemtomkiem yep! That’s exactly it. It’s a matter of magnitude. You’ll almost certainly lose if you don’t hit a 2/3 in the dew drop hand. In the BW deck example, I don’t think you auto lose if you miss on what you need (swamp) for a turn or two since having a castable 2 mana spell goes a long way
@Bazingahhhh10 сағат бұрын
@@jestemtomkiem i guess the worst case scenario is not as bad in the case of the stout as missing a land drop guarantees to have a play on turn 2 regarldess, that should help you stabilise the game somewhat, whereas the worst case scenario (= not drawing a 2 or 3 drop) with the dreamdew almost guarantees you to lose the game. It goes back to what he said about risk/reward

Thanks, good info on how to build the UR deck. Small comment on Blacksmiths Talent. I personally have really liked it in my RB decks. It just fills out the curve so nice but you do want to make sure you have your 2 drop creature. Just getting to level 3 turns all your creatures into threats.

For Eerie, both don't have to happen. ETB & when you unlock a room. You could have 2 triggers, correct? Great channel, I've been playing since February 2011.

Indeed! One room card gets you two triggers basically
@a.foobix4 күн бұрын
Yes, one for ETB and one for paying for the other half of the room. Eerie asks for fully unlocked room, but each half is a "door"

Set is giving me NEO vibes cos I can see some pairs leaning in different directions in different drafts, ie; your WU deck may be more aggro focused some drafts and more enchantment focused in others. The RW "power 2 or less" archetype seems the most interesting to me, both because it gives small aggro creatures more lategame value but also it has a bunch of cool Creepy toy designs
@SupahGeck7 күн бұрын
Dunno I think the 13 or less life clause on the lands makes them a touch better than normal tapped lands, to the point where I'm excited for some splashing. On the first few turns it's the usual sequencing for tap lands. But if there's a halfway viable aggro deck in any formst, it's usually got it's opponents to 13 by turn 4 relatively often, so on the backfoot your splashy deck turns on easier. And if you are against another slow deck then you can both durdle no worries. I think it will make them less risky to play in multiples at the very least, even in 2 color aggro decks I could see running 3+ if I got them, they are really only bad if there is a board stall early.

There is no way the MTGA shuffler is random, sometimes the algorithm decides you must lose. I just played best of 3, 5 floods with just about double lands as spells and one screw. My deck had 16 lands and two of those 1 mv artifacts to search for land. Very frustrating

Hey Alex, been a fan of your work and analyses since roughly MKM (actively returned to MtG in LOTR), and even capitalise on rotational Arena quick drafts to listen to your back catalogue - it's that impressive! And apropos of this video, just wrapped up draft 1 of the Arena Open Day 2 with a suitably horrible 0-4 Izzet build. Snatched a win in 3 of those 4 rounds against various shades of green decks, so it wasn't a "total" loss, but still. In hindsight, I got carried away after qualifying for Day 2 after a 0-2 start in my only entry, and after listening to this and watching Dafore play Izzet I thought I could reasonably draft the archetype; however the inexperience caught up with me. Started the draft with 2 straight Mockingbirds, had a Stormchaser's Talent pack 2, and for the rares that was it. Blue was definitely open, but decided late on the second colour (nothing else really seemed opened besides white, and I tried with all my might to avoid Azorius). Should've stayed mono blue with a smattering of green (Innkeeper's Talent P3P2 sadly went astray) or black, but tacked on red because I had Izzet at the back of my mind, and correspondingly got 0 Pearls of Wisdom, 0 Mentors, 0 TOTTs, only 1 Might of the Meek. Overloaded on Into the Flood Maws (3) and Shore Ups (2-3), but those were too reactive in regards to spell count, and coupled with no card draw with mediocre interaction (2 Conducts and 2 Agate Assaults) the recipe for disaster was written. I actually made the mistake you forewarned about: forcing Izzet without seeing the specific Izzet signals. I navel-gazed my 2 straight Mockingbirds and blue being open into durdling the choice of my second colour, and those Mentors/Pearls/Meeks/TOTTs never showed up (Izzet might've been contested at some point but in all likelihood those cards were never opened in this draft). Started playing Arena Opens in WOE - made Day 2 in the last 2, MH3 and BLB -, reached Mythic in the last 2 months as well for the first time, so I've been feeling tangible progress in the last few months. I enjoy the format, but BLB really showed how inexperienced I still am in navigating draft: it truly was the hardest format of recent times for me to grapple with. Was it the the on-the-rails feeling turbocharged by the tribal themes? Initially it seemed simple enough, but as it progressed I felt the exact opposite. Anyways, sorry for the long post, and keep up the excellent work!

I like UR much more as a control deck. Playing a couple counter spells, some quality removal (need some TOTT and downdraft are musts) and slamming any of the blue uncommons. I feel like my Tempo UR decks still get blown out on the return
