This already won me two of three games yesterday on Arena. I wasn't even aware of, much less understood, these roles until this video. I really like Limited Level Ups, there's a paucity of game-play advice relative to draft and deck building advice. Thanks Alex!

"gonna be one of the best uncommons" hmmm. im not convinced haunt the network is gonna be that good of a card. life drain is nice, but 5 mana, just make 2 1/1 flyers? its that really good enough? (honest question). personal, i think you wanna ask a little bit more from your 5 drops. i get that there's gonna be a ton of artifacts so the drain should be fairly high most of the time but it just doesn't seem that good to me. it just seems too low of an impact on board for 5 mana, then again, i did underestimate a very similar card in MKM, so i could be wrong but i think im gonna wait to play it until i see the data for this one

At a minimum it is drain/gain two life from the tokens. How many additional artifacts do you think you need to have to make it "good enough"?

@danielwlogan well, ive given it some though. 1st of all, its not really about how much life drain im i looking for, its more how much life drain is it going to do in your avg UB deck. if its like say 8, that's probably pretty dang good. if its like 3 or 4. eh, i duno, maybe thats good, maybe thats just ok. honestly im not sure. if its like 5 or 6. thats probably a pretty reasonably good magic card but i still dont know about "one of the best signpost uncommons" i dont know, im not the best at card evaluation, i struggle with it alot for some reason, compared to my winrate. youd think someone that plays between 5 accounts and got to diamond would be alot better at it but nah, i tend to just ride the 17lands/untapped gg data to glory

Yeah I think you might be underrating the drain aspect! I see that as a huge part of the card, not just something nice. Even just drain 2 is solid, but I imagine it'll be more like 3-4 on average (and sometimes more)

Kenji likes to play very controlling decks. But he still tends to attack every turn. That's something that I really learned from him: You need very good reasons to not attack.

Random tip / feedback: you can download PNGs of cards from Scryfall so they have rounded, transparent borders! Other than that: love your videos, keep up the good work!

In discussing hulldrifter, I think you are completely downplaying how much worse crew 3 is than crew 1 or 2. I did a scryfall search for common crew 3 vehicles and they were all basically unplayable. The next comparison I made was with into the fae court. It draws you some cards and puts a game piece on board similar to hulldrifter. This card performed well, but notably drew one extra card and the game piece on board was immediately useful, which will not always be the case with hulldrifter. I'm in the camp that it won't be amazing. As you said at the start, decks will probably be able to fit between 3 and 6 vehicles, I just can't picture hulldrifter being one that you want more than 1 copy of, if even that.

I think this is an important analysis _if_ Pilots are a scarce token across the board. It's hard to say how easy Crew Pilots will be to make at the moment, but I'm pretty sure Hulldrifter's value goes way up if they're pretty prevalent, and I predict they will be significantly moreso than in Neon Dynasty.

Max speed can be reached in 3 turns on the turn you start your engines you can deal damage and go to speed 2

Definitely looking like a set where your sideboard-esque naturalizes and disenchants are maindeckable, possible premium depending on the vehicle density.

yeah, the fact that, unlike other sets with enchantments/artifact themes, this set the special permanent type are all threats instead of only like half of them being so. that said, they are still vehicles. so hard to say if they're gonna be premium cards. but yeah, naturalize effects should be maindeckable

Just to clarify; pilots can crew and saddle as if their power was 2 higher. So a 1 power pilot token can crew that crew 3 Hulldrifter.

Something to note about Speed, mentioned roughly around 2:30, you can get to max speed in 3 turns if you make your opponent lose life the same turn if you play a Start your Engines! card, since the emblem ability hasn't triggered yet you can go from Speed 1 to Speed 2 on the same turn.

thank god for you alex! headed to my first ever in person draft since getting into magic in august…I’ve listened to your podcast since BLB, and it’s helped me grow as a player on Arena, and especially in sealed tourneys with friends. Hoping with your help I can at least get one win on the board at the lgs! any quick card evaluation tips / heuristics for a first timer at an in-person draft with a clock and real social pressure (not faceless usernames or bots) affecting the picks?

Innistrad limited is beloved ground, but I think this set is a complete mess. My experience so far has been packs with a lot of air in them and lack of critical mass support for the themes/tribes. The problem they have is that there is a lot of power creep since INN and SOI blocks, and that clearly influenced what could and could not be in the packs. In a vacuum you would just pick all the MID/VOW cards because they are objectively better. It's a short run product, I'm sure there's some amusement to be had, but wow there are some glaring problems.

On the plane of Innistrad, blue having zombies is inspired by Dr. Frankenstein, especially as depicted in the classic Universal film era. If you port that character over into the world of MtG, he was very heavy into blue mana, and his monster (in the films) fits best as a zombie within the creature types of MtG.

Just did the preview event and I’m in love with this set. So sad we are not getting this one on arena. They took almost all the bangers from six sets with very similar archetypes and each deck looks interesting. No organ hoarder makes me tear up a little but it’s fine.
