Great run. But now you come to the real turning point. Next map presents unfair traps, scarce ammo and health with high tier demons, luck based encounters, Tedious cleaning. Except for broad and not cramped areas, (mostly) it has all the characteristic that you detest. So good luck

If you search on KZbin you can find "Doom as unintended: Hell Revealed map 11 V.Cacophony" And it is very non-standard. Imps shooting Hell Knight fire balls The super shotgun emitting archvile flames. And other stuff

Reading youe comments on this map: There is a wad called Urania And the author has gone to extensive effort to make sure monsters are placed in awkward positions as well as heavy duty enemies. So such a WAD may be on yoru tedious list

Do you think with a lot of other good quality wads coming out over the years that it's worth running through HR/HR 2? I'm a little perplexed by some of the map designs features but I guess I can't blame it too much for being a 1997 wad

That's what I'm slowly starting to wonder about. It did win the poll that I ran not too long ago, so I don't want to not deliver on that, but there's so much good stuff out there. Necromantic Thirst, to name one, is on the top of my "must play for the channel" list. Not to mention, there's also all the other classic modern WADs out there. If people really want to see HR/HR 2, then I'll continue uploading it, but other WADs will be sprinkled in more than usual.

And yeah, I agree. Some of the choices make me scratch my head at times. I suppose that's one interesting thing from all of this. It's intriguing slightly to see what a really hard mapset was back in the day and how the design choices played into that.

SR50s are pretty easy to do if you have a good key bind for strafe, so I tend to use it quite a bit when I wanna get around faster.

One of the primary examples of why Hell Revealed sucks and HR2 is so much better. In HR2 you are fighting “normal” monsters the “normal” way, while almost every HR1 map after the secret levels is just an unbearable pseudo-tyson level or a shotgun-only snooze fest. I honestly don’t see why people thought this wad is good back in the 90s. It commits so many obvious sins. Plutonia never reaches that type of tedium.

Just going to try and freestyle an answer here. If i had to give any kind of answer (because there's probably a lot), it could be a combination of having no nostalgia for the WADs and/or people getting used to the more advanced/evolved styles of mapping the community has put forth as the standard in the past 10 or so years. There's certainly reasons to play these older WADs, and fun is sometimes a byproduct of that. For me, I admire and respect these WADs much more than I enjoy them. They put forth revolutionary design styles, combat ideas, and gimmicks. Other than that, I just don't get the same level of enjoyment out of something like HR compared to other WADs that are descendants of HR.

Then again, I would still say WADs like Alien Vendetta, Kama Sutra, and Scythe 2 all hold up today in terms of complete products, so I'm not sure. I particularly only have this issue with 90s WADs from my own experience.

There's a monster blocking line there so the Imps don't swarm that little part of the room. Hell Revealed does that a fair amount.

I know Myst Ache, but more from Community Chest 3, MAP29 which is a giant of a map. very labyrinthian. You can fight all your way in, release archviles which teleport all over the place and resurrect monsters you just killed. I like the Cyberdemon maze. Similar to MAP27 on Hell Revealed. Having said that Community Chest 1, MAP29 from Magikal (Kevin Reay) is a giant of a map, very difficult. He has since died. As has Ty Halderman of Eternal Doom and Icarus Vanguard fame. I remember talking to Ty.

Easily the hardest and hardly the easiest. I’ve long noticed something unusual about your skill set: you are really, unusually good at shooting rockets with lost souls flying around without getting hurt (much). It’s something about the way you move but I can’t pin it down yet.

Just to say, Sunder might be up to your consideration for a hard WAD. Now up to 22 maps. 1 => 20 and 31-32. Supremely hard but not impossible as ZeroMaster has done all, Not quite SlaughterFest, Also HardFest and HardFest2 . Mind you I know that HardFest has 1 map that involves a fair amount of Parkour which is difficult unless done by TAS.

having to practice individual fights with saves + the length of the single segment, really hammers home the shmup similarities - hell this is exactly how you'd approach a 1cc me personally i've been really daunted by longer maps but i gotta make that leap sooner or later bc stuff like elysion by DD or sunder is just too intriguing

I agree with your commentary-- this map really doesn't look very interesting. It looks very short, compact, and standard. And the challenges issued to the player are really cheap ones. Hooray another cyberdemon in close-quarters, two piles of revenants, and a horde of arch-viles.

I have also seen Jyrio playing MAP06. it looks easy but it is isn't and many DOOM tricks are done to get a fast UV-MAX time. Very skilful

To get a UV-MAX on this is hard. I notice you still cells right at the end. You have to fight for the Plama gun and fight towards the Rocket launcher and use a combination of Plasma, Rocket & Berserk in a very targetted way, conserving rocket & plasma ammo for larger enemies or where you need to get through a bottle neck quickly. I have seen Jyrio's run but not yet Ancalagon's. Extreme management of weapons, ammo and use of berserk is required for a good time, because nothing is distributed favourably on this map.
