Hell Revealed is a 1997, 32-map mega WAD made by Yonatan Donner and Haggay Niv shrouded in infamy with a reputation that precedes it. For one, it’s a bit of an understatement to say, but Donner and Niv follow very clearly in the footsteps of Plutonia. They take the design philosophies and brutal combat of those maps and do them one better. They go even crazier and deliver fights that are much harder, more cathartic, and less forgiving. This is a WAD from the 90s that purely represents a focus on challenging combat, and pleasing aesthetics rarely (if not ever) show themselves.
Another very memorable part of Hell Revealed combat-wise is its strange fascination with Barons of Hell. It starts out somewhat mild, but Donner and Niv’s obsession with them will become VERY apparent early on in the mega WAD. It’s something that turns a lot of these maps into tedious chores. Tedium is something we’ll probably see a lot of.
A positive memorable feature of Hell Revealed is its heavy usage of Rise of the Triad MIDIs. Some of them are the sole reason that I remember the maps (such as MAP13), and they generally make the experience of playing Hell Revealed tolerable.
Despite my gripes with it, Hell Revealed is undoubtedly one of the most influential WADs ever made, and its hardcore combat design can be seen in countless WADs that followed it. So it’ll be interesting to look at these maps again.
I’m not looking forward to this one too much, and its sequel even less so. I’m curious what my perspective on these maps will be after a long time of not playing it.

Into the Gate is about as chummy a map you’re likely to see in Hell Revealed. I like the non-secret credits room at the start and the incredible Rise of the Triad MIDI, but that’s about it. There’s also that incredibly pointless Cacodemon outside who’ll just sit there forever alone if you decide to walk past him and the big berserk ambush. Neither of these really help the map out in any way, though. I don’t like how slow the ambush is and that you have to walk into the exit room to trigger some Imps, but it’s not too painful.
