The MV6 is a great mic. But the "i guess USB mics dont have to suck" is a strange title. USB Microphones don't suck if you buy the right ones. Beacn Mic, Rode XDM-100, Podmic USB, even something as cheap as the Fifine AM8 are all fantastic microphones and theres plenty more out there.

Some of those mics are totally decent for content production for social media, but my channel focuses on pro audio solutions where USB mics are literally never used in professional settings.

There is contradiction with what you said Im genuinely curious cause I have never heard anyone separate the two. If gain can increase the polarity of a mic that is also making it more sensitive. Everywhere I look it says that gain is a sensitivity level. You can increase it by gaining up. If mic is hotter than another and you can gain it up to match you literally just increased the sensitivity of one to match the other. Or Am I missing something? I think what you're referring to is the difference in how much gain something needs to produce sound. And the problem with that being considered the only term for sensitivity is it can be increased by gain. I think that's why we typically say this mice runs hot. Meaning it doesn't need much gain. But it's hard to separate the two because gain literally changes sensitivity. If you gain up it's more prone to pick up noise. I think the problem is we shouldn't be using sensitivity as the term for how hot a mic runs. For the lack of increased gain it needs. It just you undo the fact that you match sensitivity with gain and then say there different. I don't know it still doesn't make sense with all the information to separate them. If we want to nitty gritty gain is a sensitivity level. Other wise you wouldn't be able to match mic sensitivity?
@randyrektor7 күн бұрын
The difference is that one is before the output and one is after. Sensitivity is how effortlessly the diaphragm can physically react to pressure in the air. If the mic isn’t sensitive enough, no amount of gain will make it better at picking up things that just can’t stimulate the diaphragm. Gain happens downstream after the mic has done all of the work. Gain does not affect a microphone in anyway. It only amplifies what the mic dished out.
@Chelitosuav7 күн бұрын
@@randyrektor So you mean tell me that when I gain mic. And it picks up more it was already there to begin with before I gained up?
@randyrektor7 күн бұрын
Yes the mic pics up the same amount of things regardless of the gain. The gain then brings up everything proportionately. The gain has no affect over the microphones ability to ‘hear’ sound
@Chelitosuav7 күн бұрын
@@randyrektor The only reason I am asking is doesn't matter how I ask an AI it always gives the same answer that gain is sensitivity level. And I tried googling it and only you and one more person fights this ideology of gain and sensitivity. I couldn't get AI to agree with you Im at a loss even at my audio school they told us it increases sensitivity. And in all my years of Audio it made sense but now you tell me no And I can't wrap my head around how gain isn't sensitivity at this point. Because I thought the pick up zone of mic isn't the diaphragm it's the polarity pattern and if you gain up that increases doesn't it?
@randyrektor7 күн бұрын
Haha I get this. AI just uses information it finds online and people commonly refer to gain as sensitivity. You have to consider how gain works from an electrical standpoint. It only increases voltage within the console, it doesn’t change the ability of the diaphragm to move, or anything to do with the mic itself. The mic is the mic, nothing changes that. If you speak to people who manufacture microphones they will dispel this myth

I like the sound of the Boya but not right up close. That proximity effect is super strong. When your mouth is practically on the Boya it sounds muddy as hell. When you back off a little, it sounds great. The thing is that the AT2020 sounds much better right out the box than the 2040 (not to mention the fact that it's a condenser mic). No contest.....at all. Might have to look into the Boya. Gonna check your review on that. The AT2040 might not be great for podcasting but its shrillness and lack of low end might be of use maybe to a Metal screamer vocalist or something (but there's the SM7B and SM7dB, both dynamics that sound great on Metal vocals). Idk, just pulling things outta my bum here lol. It would be interesting to find out if it sounds good for anything else.

Na bro I think this is a solid take. I’m with you on the dullness of the 2040 making it not the best choice for podcasts. It’s a bit of an odd mic in general. Also totally agree with the Boya. I’ve tried a couple other mics since then that I think I like more. The Feelworld pm1 has a pretty nice podcasty sound and doesn’t suffer from the grounding issues I was experiencing with the Boya

Randy -- great review. I suspect that the myth of condensers picking up more ambience than dynamics comes from the general differences in high frequency response, polar pattern tightness, and polar pattern consistency. My experience is that the most notable room ambience in less treated rooms is high frequency. That means it will be more noticeable in a mic that has stronger upper frequencies. Also in my experience is that many common condensers don't have as tight a polar pattern as most common dynamics. A part of that polar pattern experience is that many condensers don't have a consistent pattern for the frequency range of the mic. The polar pattern may be really nice at say 1kHz or 2kHz and then start approaching sub-cardioid or omni as one goes up or down in frequency from the frequencies with the nice patterns. Perhaps the designs result in that behavior from intended use. Most condenser mics are intended for studio or treated room use and not live use where tight and frequency consistent polar patterns matter a great deal for gain before feedback. Most dynamics are designed for a use in broadcast studios and live use in addition to any recording studio use. All that said, the bottom line is that tightness of pattern and its consistency across the mics frequency range are the controlling factors affecting how much a given mic is sensitive to room ambience. As a note here, there are condenser mics with tight and highly frequency consistent polar patterns. The Earthworks SR117, AKG C636, and DPA 2028 condenser mics immediately come to mind. I've used these in live use in very live rooms just like I'd use any dynamic and their tight patterns and frequency consistent patterns are what make them extremely well behaved in live use.
@randyrektor14 күн бұрын
Totally, I think you're right on the money. I think the big part is the intent of use. Most people who use a dynamic mic know to 'eat the mic' so to speak, whereas people will set up with a condenser 10" away and complain about the results. I also agree with you about the frequency rolloff above 10kHz or so. My thoughts on that are that practically speaking, it's very unlikely to have unwanted reflections above 10kHz if you're using the mic properly. For one, high end has a realllly hard time stimulating the capsule from off axis. Secondly, if you're talking into it, there's a great chance that your head is blocking the addressable side of the microphone to a large extent. I guess this comes back to how you're using it. As you said "tightness of pattern and its consistency across the mics frequency range are the controlling factors affecting how much a given mic is sensitive to room ambience". This is so spot on.

I bought this due to the dual option (was $49, I think via black Friday?) ... what I use it for is to use XLR for video lectures captured on my MBP/M2max and have the USB going to iMac (intel) for zoom/general mic use. I agree that the USB is more 'noisy' and less clean. I use a Rode audio-interface. The downside is that I found the touch sensitivity for selecting volume/ring RGB was not very responsive. An interesting observation is that USB and XLR can have DIFFERENT volumes. Good review, thank you!
@randyrektor15 күн бұрын
Why have I NEVER thought about using the two feeds separately like this. Super interesting. Thats awesome that you snagged such a great price too.
@profhaub15 күн бұрын
@ TBH I had no idea if it would work. I was rushed to get on a zoom call so I tried it, and zoom picked it up via usb. I still had it active in rodecaster -- after meeting I played around with both and noticed the volume knob affects USB (only?) as the signal on rodecaster did not change with knob.
@randyrektor15 күн бұрын
That’s awesome! Yeah that makes sense. That’s why a lot of these mics sound better as XLR cause the internal preamp and conversion is bypassed entirely. Pretty awesome though, I’m thinking you could do some cool thinks having separate feeds for different apps.

I've tried a bunch of other gaming microphones in the past and since they couldn't be turned off, their RGB lights would always be on even if I put my computer to sleep. Since my PC is in my bedroom this is really annoying because the light will be on when I'm sleeping, so I had to return all those other mics.
