I am living in izmir and these are some of my thoughts. Summer heat is definitely a real issue and a by product seems to be the waterfront smells terrible a lot of the time. The sea is also generally very dirty and suffers majorly from red algae suggesting a high nitrate content. Don't live in a "grave" as the locals call them, that is a building over 15 years of age, as before that building regulations were not properly enforced and if there is an earthquake (and izmir is a very active area), they are highly likely to come down. The problem is that there a LOT of older buildings, most of the housing stock in fact, and newer buildings carry a price premium. There is a general lack of investment in the city as politically it is unpopular with the leadership and have obstacles put in their path and a lack of funding. This shows in the general feel of the place, roads and pavements, buildings, social projects etc. We planned to live here but have decided not to.

First of all, get rid of your Amr. pronunciation! The language is almost unable to learn for foreigners. Alone, the 'ga' has up to 8 different meanings, reaching from fish or chicken to train station. It depends on the tonation. Then, going to Saigon, nobody will understand your northern dialect. I was working there for 6 years, mainly in the northern part. I could travel cross country by bus (maynly suicide drivers) because I could speak some of the language.

As I can see this video was posted about 8 months ago...Has anything changed as far as the requirements for the SMM2H Visa? Do you still need to have an income of 7K per month?
@snailtravelers
@snailtravelers 13 күн бұрын
My understanding is that they dropped the monthly income requirement, but it is difficult to find firm information. The fixed deposit amount is still required, RM150K for singles and RM300K for married couples. There's a Facebook group called Sarawak My Second Home Group that is helpful. Thanks for watching!

How can you retire there when you only can get 90 day visa's?
@snailtravelers
@snailtravelers 17 күн бұрын
We met several expats in DaNang who do visa runs every 90 days. One lady we met from Canada said this is getting more difficult to do by land if you come back the same day. She said from now on she will fly out to a neighboring every 90 days, stay out for a week, then come back.

Hi, where is the best place to stay in izmir? Recommendations for food and things to do? Where was the restaurant with the view? Is there any parts of izmir coastal side where it is more conservative and less ibiza like?
@snailtravelers
@snailtravelers 19 күн бұрын
We think Alsancak and Passaport are two great areas of the city to stay in Izmir. There are a lot of cafes and restaurants here. From there you can easily get to Konak, which is the heart and historical center of the city. The train to Ephesus (Efus) leaves from Alsancak if you want to visit. The restaurant with the view is called Izmir Seyirtepe Restoran; you can put it in Google maps to see the exact location. It is a bit isolated and you would need a car or taxi to get there. Izmir in general is not a very conservative city compared to the rest of Turkey. The northern areas such as Bostanlı and Karşiyska are the least conservative and traditional, whereas Konak is probably the most "authentic". Let me know if you have any other questions, and thanks for watching!

@@snailtravelers Thank you. Would you say the food is affordable in Izmir? Is there any nice coastal areas you would recommend? We were thinking Kusadasi, as it seems quite similar to Fethiye. But Im not sure is it a party destination. Is the food affordable there?
@snailtravelers
@snailtravelers 18 күн бұрын
@@ForhanaChowdhury-u1x Food is generally affordable, about $6 for a full meal at a cafe. We haven't yet been to Kuşadası but have heard it is very popular, and it would also be a good base if you are planning to visit Efus. Çesme is another popular coastal area near Izmir. Food prices would be slightly more expensive in Kuşadası and Çesme compared to Izmir, but still reasonable.

We left Sarande several weeks ago. We really enjoyed it and totally agree with you assessment. Sarande is working hard on the tourist image so to speak. Doing new sidewalks and building more but they have a few years to go. We are not big beach people but wouldn't mind spending a couple months here. We also took a day trip to the Castle and the Blue Eye. I would recommend a private taxi. Ryan spoke English and drove us around to see the sites and spend the whole day at the castle, town and the blue eye. He only charged 60 US so it was a nice comfortable and fun trip. We do love Albania and will want to come back.

Yes! I've been waiting for your Sarande video. I don't care if Sarande is a little more costly than other Albanian cities. I don't really know if there is any allure for me to stay in those places. The allure is there to live in the beach community of Sarande though. It's still much less costly than other European beach cities.

Yes, probably, but it depends on the amount of SS and the lifestyle that you would live in Vietnam. You would also need to factor in visa runs (you would need to leave Vietnam every 90 days because of the visa rules) and visa expenses.
