We are learning so much about Turkiye from you, a country that really wasn't on our radar when we began our nomadic travels. Despite the strong foreign presence messing with the cultural vibe that you describe, Fethiye looks like a really attractive place. The beaches look unique and beautiful. You know we love those walking and biking paths. Combine that with the nice laid back people and some English spoken, it looks like a pleasant place to spend a lot of time.

I am 35 years old, I was born in Fethiye and lived here all my life. Based on my impressions, I can easily say that the expatriates in Fethiye, especially the British, Russians and Ukrainians, see themselves as superior class people than the local people and avoid friendship and communication with them as much as possible.

You’re right about the issues with expats.. I’m English and it’s something I hate. I actually think it’s an issue with some greedy sellers (they want to put the prices in pounds to get a bigger profit). This isn’t fair for locals and tourists.. everyone gets ripped off. I think they should make it illegal to sell in foreign currency’s.

I know (or knew, some of them have died over the past decade) quite a lot of British retirees in Fethiye. I'll be quite brutal and honest, a lot of them won't or can't learn the language, won't eat Turkish food, drink Turkish coffee, and don't really trust the Turks. They like the weather and relaxed lifestyle, but stick to the same old bars and restaurants, eat steak and chips every day, and complain about stuff not being like it is "at home". I try to avoid them whenever I visit.

I’ve been travelling to Turkey since the early 90’s. They haven’t recently changed the name to Türkiye. It’s always been there. I was a holiday rep for 20 years and I lived in Fethiye for a short time before living in Hisaronu. I’ve travelled all over Turkey and my ex husband was Turkish. And I can say he has never used the term Türkiye. I may have heard a much older person use that term but very few in all my time not just living there but visiting from the UK. Hisaronu used to be a quiet charming little village. Now wouldn’t give it the time of day because it’s turned into a street of night clubs and bars. I have to really search for the unspoilt places where I can easily enjoy an authentic Turkish meal. I hate place where I have to walk past rows of restaurants catered for the western palates. I find it ridiculous that expat’s or even just on holiday would want to travel to a country where the local food is one of the best in the world using fresh organic ingredients, would want to eat food they eat at home every single day! Why go? Stay at home, because they are spoiling it for broader minded, cultured people that want an authentic experience. I overheard a woman nurse talking about her holiday in Turkey. She was complaining because she had to live off chips and soup because there wasn’t enough English food available. Where I find there’s too much English food on offer. Idiots like this make me so angry! Thank god Turkey is a big country where there are still unspoilt places.

Thanks for watching our video! Although we love Fethiye and would have been happy living there, we chose Izmir to be our home in Turkey. It's a bigger city compared to Fethiye, slightly less expensive and less touristy. However Fethiye has better beach access compared to Izmir. Great video as always. I know what you mean about staying in an area that has too many expats or tourists, sometimes it feels like the outside culture takes over and you're not getting the culture of the country you came to. We like the area we are living in Phuket as it's more locals with a smattering of expats. We can get western food if we want but we're mostly surrounded by locals. We liked Rawai but there are lots of American expats there and it just didn't feel as genuine.

Lol. I spit up my coffee when I heard you say Turkey recently changed its name to Türkiye. 'Turkey' is the correct English spelling and pronunciation. 'Türkiye' is the Turkish spelling and pronunciation. Just like the great city in Germany, Cologne - Germans say and spell it 'Köln'. For that matter, English say 'Germany' but it's actually pronounced 'Deutschland'. Well, unless your are French. The French call Germany, 'Allemagne'. I don't know why the world pronounces places differently, I think it's stupid - whatever the locals call it, we should too.

As with other countries in the general area, some are actually removing the English version for everyday use, in English as a request for respect. We do not call Morroco rocko and expect them to like it. Perhaps even Morroco isnt the correct name for the place. India as we call it requests this same courtesy as of mid Sept 2023. For everyone to call it as the original name! Turkiye is n o t hard to manage. Afterall we use stay'cation which is absurd on it's own. Balconia is much better! Just a heads-up.

Thank you for such an informative video. Do you know how health care works and whether it is easy to find English speaking doctors? For seniors, health care services are always on my mind because it is a foreign country and I don't speak the language. Thank you for any insights you may provide.

We haven't had to use the health care system yet, but from our research we think it is good. It would be easy to find an English speaking doctor and medical staff Fethiye, but probably not as easy in other parts of Turkey

@@snailtravelers Do you know that Sarawak MM2H (SMM2H) maintains the old criteria for expats who want to make Malaysia as their second home? You just have to live in Sarawak for 15 days in a year and can live elsewhere in Msia for the other time of the year. I read somewhere that a few expats got their SMM2H approvals this year. If you decide to make Msia as your second home, may be you can check it out more with some agents that can help you do this.

Just got back from spending a few months in Turkey with the bulk of the time in Fethiye. Yes it's super nice, the ocean is beautiful and it's an amazing ocean town. But there are deal breakers. It's dirty and there are way too many street dogs. I had considered moving there but those two things are absolute deal breakers for me.

@Kohar Kayabalian, Lebanon is certainly beautiful but not exactly the most stable place. I've been to Armenia as well and it's a tad bit too third world for most westerns to live in. Georgia is probably a better option.
