Needs a tune-up or something. It ain't running right for having only 89k miles. It shifted early. Didn't hit redline and I know from experience they top out at 50mph in first gear. The 0-60mph time should be closer to 13.5 seconds.
@LAEXMA23 күн бұрын
Haven’t had this car in years, but it was running perfectly fine. I’m at high altitude. The thin air eats up a lot of horsepower (and it’s only 100 to begin with at sea level). The 2.5 motor is more undersquared than the 2.2, they don’t like to rev much beyond 5K.

As a long time K car guy, as drivers, you know your stuff pretty good. To start you press's the pedal all the way gently, hold for a few seconds then start without pressing gas, as long as you don't give it swift and release on the gas after a few seconds you can gently drive it to warm it up, btw first 2.2 engine has 84hp, Mitsubishi 2.6 has 96, up to 101until replacement by lengthened stroke 2.2, 100 hp later 2.2s had 96,97, then 93 hp

Aw, I passed my driver's test on my parents' 83 Aries. Not a bad basic car and easy to drive & park. But that carb/automatic choke was terrible. And with the 2.2L engine, that 85mph max on the speedometer was optimistic 😅

This is a great reminder of how high and broad the hood looked. They all floated like that...and buzzed like that when new. The float was to make it feel like a boat from the 70's.

Interesting observation. However I’d say it’s oblivious to its surroundings no matter what. It does what it’s programmed to do and doesn’t know or care where it is.

My 83 didn’t the vent windows. Had an AM radio that a friend installed a FM converter to. I liked the car, but my friends didn’t. Wouldn’t win any races but it got to work a lot. My car would occasionally stall too. It turned out to be a thing beside the carb. You disconnect the wires and unbolt the two bolts , and pull it out. It has something to do with the fuel/idle. I rarely used my A/C. It stole too much power lol. Watch out for the timing belt, it went out at 62000. Thanks for this . Great memories. Ride on, …but stay in the slow lane. P.S. I remember now. Check out the electric feedback control system. That and the electronic spark timing control. Those two and the electric choke pretty much control the combustion system. Good luck.

How much is the car
@christhornycroft36867 ай бұрын
The first Yorker I rode in was a blue on blue 1988 Landau and I fell in love with it. Best seats and configuration I've ever seen. No jamming your hand down the side of the car to operate it. The first that I owned was a red/red 1985 2.2 turbo that was, admittedly garbage mechanically due to both powertrain quality and age. After that, I had a grey/blue 1990 5th Ave and the car I bought last weekend was a silver/burgundy 93 NYer 5th Ave. All of them have had velour interior. The latest one is by far the best. Maybe I'm just used to more powerful cars now, but I'll be honest. My one single complaint, besides the brakes needing a bit more oomph, with these cars is the 147 hp 3.3 V6. It's too low, both for a V6 and for a car this big and heavy. Obviously, it's a luxury cruiser, so you're not looking for AMG power, but 200-220 would have been sufficient. I do like the 3.3L engine otherwise, though. I don't think I'd get leather seats if I could help it. These cars were made for velour and it's a crying shame they don't make cars with velour interiors anymore. They're so comfortable, luxurious and classy. It's a grown ups car. I feel totally safe and in control. I drove in a late 80s Cadillac Sedan De Ville as a kid in the early 90s that had velour seats, but I don't remember it being quite as nice inside as the New Yorker 5th Ave - except for the fact that it had digital dash (which would be hell to replace these days) and a 4.5 V8 engine - which, admittedly and hilariously, wasn't much more powerful than Chrysler's 3.3 V6.
@christhornycroft36867 ай бұрын
I've had 4 of these, all with velour interior. Gorgeous cars. My first was a blue on blue 1988 NYer Landau which I had on loan. Then I had a red/red 1985 NYer with an awful 2.2 Turbo engine that died on me within weeks. After that, I had a grey/grey 1990 Fifth Ave that eventually had tranny issues towards the end. I just purchased a 1993 NYer 5th Ave, Silver on red, in mint condition, easily the best of all the ones I've owned. All but the 85 had the 3.3 L V6 engine which I which had about 25-30 more HP for the engine size, but in these cars, you're not looking for speed. The one I have now (1993) has 153,000 kms and 30,000 on the transmission, which was replaced under warranty. My only complaint is the AM/FM reception is terrible, but that's a common problem with cars of that age. It was owned by some guy's father who passed away 5 or 6 years ago and the guy kept insurance on it but didn't really drive it until his wife insisted he sell it because she didn't want a grandpa car around. I love it. I just got an entertainment centre for it, mounted with a suction cup (I'd never drill holes in this car), so I can have NAV and listen to some music. I don't understand why they don't make cars with velour interiors anymore. I know grandpa car is a slur now, but they're so comfortable and you feel like a king driving down the road. Again, for a V6 that gets 24-26 MPG hwy you'd expect more than 150 HP, but it's a luxury barge. It's meant for relaxing drives, not racing teenagers in their Civics. Comfortable cars barely exist anymore and this was one of the last - particularly in the affordable range.
