The Mariners can't even be cheap correctly. Pretty sure there have been three transactions for Jake Burger and Spencer Horowitz for packages we could have easily beaten this off season. Last I checked, those guys make league minimum and would be an easy upgrade at a few positions for basically nothing. Also Gavin Lux has been without a roster spot on the Dodgers for a while now. He's a cheap, available, easy upgrade to the roster than fits well as a platoon partner with Bliss or Moore. No rumors or movement there. Someone in the Twins infield is going to be without a job. The Orioles roster is filled with guys who could help the M's and are blocking hot prospects. Plenty of guys available that would improve the team and you wouldn't spend all the budget. Dipoto and Co being stagnant tells me this is a step back year. Funny how Houston traded a top five bat in the league and got better. Interesting that Seattle has no interest in dealing from their strength to get better.

It's very concerning like as much as I want to blame ownership as much as I would like, there has historically been great general managers that were able to work within whatever the constraints John Stanton puts out Like I really do think that any other general manager that did the Kendall graveman trade and the Paul sewald trade would have been fired and those trades made absolutely no sense because Mariners were clearly in contention Pat gillick and Woody Woodward worked with even more constraints back then and Woody Woodward worked with possibly limited revenues due to the kingdome I really can't make any more excuses for Jerry because he has had 9 years to figure it out and all he could get the Mariners with a playoff appearance but I guess for Stanton standards one playoff appearance protects the job And now 2022 is pretty much a carbon copy of1995 But nobody really talks about that as a nostalgia treasure
@aaronstreitenberger60122 сағат бұрын
@rooftopsports I view 2022 as luck now, I was wrong in the past as a big truster of Dipoto. Last season was eye opening, especially the AL Central teams dominating the Wild Card race with significantly worse pitching. I don't think Jerry understands how to win in T-Mobile Park and him overvaluing the starting pitchers hurts our ability to compete. Basically, I realized the team has been successful in spite of him. Speaking of nostalgia bait, look at how the 2001 team was constructed and tell me that "pitching is how we're built" is the map to success in Seattle. When you have an environment that suppresses offense as much as Seattle, you shouldn't tie up all your resources in pitching because any pitcher you throw out there is going to get a boost. That will make it difficult to sign FA hitters but it also means you can fill your rotation out with ease because every pitcher will take a one year deal in Seattle if they can't get the big one from LA or NY. So tying up all five rotation spots with young controllable guys limits your ability to make moves that help the baseball and business sides of the team. Being unwilling to deal clearly failed prospects like Kelenic before their value is "attached to salary dump" makes those kinds of moves necessary in the first place. The same thing is happening with non-failed starters Kirby, Miller, Woo, and Hancock now; except they have tremendously more value than Kelenic ever did. The M's are bad at being cheap and they're bad at spending money. Maybe they should try being good at one of those things and they could probably have a sustainable winner. To me the M's are 4th in the AL West right now if Texas is healthy. Sacramento will be at least a .500 team and Houston is better than last year now. The fifth largest baseball stadium in the world will host a worse team than one playing in a minor league park. But we'll get to see a bunch of "impressive starting pitching" on the way to 4th place, that's.... something.

"There is no plan." Preposterous. Absolutely disconnected from the realities of roster building. Example: Christian Walker was reported to be at the top of their wish-list. Now, and I need you to think really hard on this one, how could they have a wish-list if they didn't do any planning? Simply because they haven't kow-towed to the Phillies laughable demands or Boston's or Chicago's for Castillo and have maintained integrity for the sake of the major-league roster, you assert that they're indifferent??? I'm as critical as the next guy about this team but you guys are on some kinda different planet.

@@rooftopsports No, no. Really focus in, here. You're arguing that they have no plan. Let's use a metaphor. Let's say someone is arguing that U.S. currency doesn't exist. Then, to prove it, they pull out a $5 bill and say, 'Look at how stupid Abraham Lincoln looks. See? Stupid beard and everything. Therefore, the U.S. has no currency.' I might even agree with you that Abe looks stupid. But to use that to support such a laughably bad argument, to use an example that contradicts your very premise, deserves ridicule. What is a plan? In baseball terms, having a team goal, strategies that help you attain that goal, and tactics to effectuate your strategies. M's goal? Field an MLB roster that wins 54% of their games within a given budget. Strategies? Cheap player acquisition. Pitching development. Mental skills development. Tactics? Build in the DR to obtain inroads into international free agents. Draft, develop, and trade. Trade out burdensome contracts. You may not like the plan. I'd agree with you. But that's not the argument you're making. You're saying that the M's HAVE NO GOALS. NO STRATEGIES. NO TACTICS. You are wrong and until you admit it, you are worthy of condescension and ridicule.

I think you vastly overestimate the Mariners saturation of the PNW sports market, aka what they blackout. The two largest metro areas outside Seattle (Portland Metro and the Lower Mainland in BC) either are actively trying to build a stadium to attract a team or root for a different MLB team because they have Rogers Sports Net to watch Hockey. Not to mention both of those cities have significant public money and interest tied up in an entirely different summer sport. The next tier down includes Victoria (same problem as the Lower Mainland), Spokane, the TriCities, Boise, Urban Montana, and Anchorage. Rage City and Spokanistan are military towns with minor league or summer ball teams. The military personnel there root for their home town MLB teams or a team they picked up in basic (Braves/Astros). Boise is culturally connected to Utah and would be in their market once the A's or Rays take the free stadium money sitting around in Salt Lake City. That leaves the Tricities, which is solid M's territory but not a ton of population, and Urban Montana, probably more independent league fans and also small population. That's no where near enough to get to a top ten Market if you include every other teams secondary and tertiary metros. I think Seattle would still be the second smallest market in the division. Do I think there is enough money in Seattle Metro alone to run a $200 million payroll? Yes, absolutely but not with how they currently operate. I don't think more money is going to fix anything.

@@rooftopsports lack of geographic and general knowledge of the PNW outside of King, Pierce, and Snohomish counties is pretty rampant in M's tube. Guys like J and MarinersSUR have some better perspective on it than most. I don't think you're anywhere near as bad as some, to be fair. But also the "Seattle is a top 10 market" meme needs to die because it is demonstrably untrue. Like I said money isn't the problem, it is the half ass way they operate. They don't trade guys on time (Kelenic and now the Starters) and tie up money in areas that should be cheap by design. Spending an extra $50 million inefficiently is not going to do much. Jerry's fascination with "2B with pop" is definitely annoying, especially when you could get more value out of that position with a more widely available cheap skill set.

What this means is that we have already been outbid on Hye-seong Kim (not a big surprise since I've heard the Jays are also after him and he fits them well). IMO, Ryan Bliss doesn't have anything else to prove in AAA and barring us signing an MLB-proven 2B should be given a real shot at the 2B job (we _should_ have given him that shot by not forcing Polanco to play on a blown knee for half of the season but Jerry's sunk cost fallacy won out). That would be okay *if* and only if we get a real 3B (my gut is telling me Paul DeJong is the best Jerry might pry from the other teams' dumpsters though). I'd love a trade for Westburg, but we all know Jerry would rather do just about anything other than trade both a SP and a top-10 prospect.

@@rooftopsports That's the thing, we don't actually know how long his contract extension is for. Even if it is a one-year prove-it deal, he ended up in this spot because he thought his moves in last year's offseason would suffice for his "sustained success" approach.

It's proof that Stanton doesn't want to win he's in it for making money which is fine and he's entitled to do that since he does own the team but in any other business it's hard to get away with that of just taking shortcuts, like for small business they actually have to take risks and spend more money investing into the business to make money but stanton unfortunately doesn't have that kind of incentive or fear because Mariners make a substantial amount of money based on their nostalgia, their stadium and the fact that Major League baseball is also a huge business
