Mexican guy here, I prefer to use the Thai mortar and pestle more than the mexican one. For one thing, you don't need to season a thai mortar and pestle, just wash it with soap and water and you are ready to go. The other thing I like about thai mortar is you can pound the spices and chilies and not worry about breaking the mortar.

This can't be worse than those fluorescent pink fresa ones are. Tamales de dulce are pretty polarizing & I've only had one version (at Damian in LA) that I ever thought was good. Usually it's savory all the way for me, but this one looks good.
