Great video Johnny. I didn't know you just did a grinch video or I would have chosen a different topic for my latest video. Oh well, there's probably room for a couple grinch videos this week. Keep up the good work sir!

My gouges feel dull but I admit I am not used to using them. They are new, from harbor freight. They were given to me. I tried them but it feels like it doesn't cut like my blade. 🤷. They feel "cheap". Hard to work with...any advice?
@JohnnyTheLaytonКүн бұрын
@reginaoatley2767 harbor freight isn't a great source for carving tools. I would think they likely need to be sharpened prior to use, a lot of carving tools come unsharpened.

I needed this! I just started and I love it but I suck. I watch videos and can’t figure out how carvers are pushing their lives easily deep into the wood and cutting so easily and smooth. After five minutes of carving my hands are exhausted and shaking and forearms on fire. I don’t get it. I’m using basswood as well. I’m getting frustrated and really needed this. Thank you.
@JohnnyTheLayton4 күн бұрын
@jefferyhall8811 I'm glad, because brother I was there. It's amazing how much of the hand strength comes with time. I work with my hands and have for years, but carving is using them in ways I hadn't before. Not only that, but the way I hold the blade has evolved, and changes as I feel the wood. I cut way deeper now and way smoother with ease than I was able to do in the beginning, but those movements of the blade are learned muscle memory that come from carving. LOTs of carving.

Hi Johnny! I can't seem to find any dark walnut oil in the UK, do you know of any substitutes?

Not dark walnut oil. Danish oil, in Black Walnut coloring. Watco brand danish oil is what I use. If you can't find that I would look for stains of similar coloring and see what effect they had.

How deep are the recesses on the back of the arm. They look as if they’re about a 16th of an inch or so. Is that deep enough for most of the depth on CARVING’s? How do I go about finding you on Instagram I don’t have a account now and I don’t know how to make one. Thank you for this video on nativity set. I enjoy watching you carve.
