That seemed fairly easy - how on Earth did they manage when using only wind power in the port's heyday? It's always puzzled me because of Charlestown's unusual layout!

Suprised to see only 2 rib boats used as tugs, I'm surprised the outboard motors were powerful enough, well-done to all concerned

Takes very little effort to move even a huge ship about. Just a sustained push.
@andytaylor2062 ай бұрын
Ribs job was mainly to pull our stern round. Daphne was doing most of the work. If no ribs we would've had a long spring to the knuckle to our port which would've done the same thing. As engine is offset to port, when she goes into reverse her stern wants to turn to starboard...

That is the second time I have seen this dock empty. The first time was in the late sixties when I took a cargo of coal into Charlestown and loaded chinaclay out for the Seine. We got a fishing net wrapped found the propellor and they emptied the lock for us to clear it.

WHO PULLED THE PLUG OUT ?
@johnrussell52452 ай бұрын
I was at Charlestown last week (23rd October). The lock door is being replaced-hence the dock is currently tidal. I assume the containers are there to subdue the waves in the lock in case of a storm.

Why the containers? 🤔
@robscov12 ай бұрын
The lock gates were damaged in a storm in September. They had to be removed for repair. The containers stop silt and waves entering the harbour until the gates are fixed.

How did they maneuver the boat out the harbor in the olden days?
@BelleBlu2 ай бұрын
With great care 😂 no seriously, with ropes (warps) & Capstans, also pulling with boats & pushing with poles & if wind was 'off shore' they'd certainly make use of it. If winds were 'on shore' they'd wait for a favourable wind. Something like that?
@PaulFisher-uj9vb2 ай бұрын
On the bow is the dolly winch above the anchor winch, the line would be attached to a suitable point and the barge warped out if conditions allowed. If the wind was fair the topsail could be set .

Ropes. I've seen it done many times in the 1960's and 1970's, and with much bigger boats than this.
