I was at Charlestown last week (23rd October). The lock door is being replaced-hence the dock is currently tidal. I assume the containers are there to subdue the waves in the lock in case of a storm.

That is the second time I have seen this dock empty. The first time was in the late sixties when I took a cargo of coal into Charlestown and loaded chinaclay out for the Seine. We got a fishing net wrapped found the propellor and they emptied the lock for us to clear it.

Why the containers? 🤔

The lock gates were damaged in a storm in September. They had to be removed for repair. The containers stop silt and waves entering the harbour until the gates are fixed.
