Live and learn! Barkeep's, Cillit Bang etc will dull polished stone. I nearly wrecked a marble shower interior with it. I recommend a mild soap and water for beautiful marble. You did well in the end, though. Good tip.

It looks like you didnt cover your brick wall. How did you get the concrete countertop cleaned up by the brick wall after it dried? It looks like the concrete got all over the brick and not a smooth line. My outdoor concrete counter was installed by professionals against a retaining wall and they forgot to tape up the wall and got concrete on the wall too. It looks sloppy and I tried to remove some of it with concrete dissolver.

Besser bricks are around $8 a piece where I am. I ended up buying 12 2.4 metre lengths of treated Pine sleepers, batton screws, a circular saw, drill and impact driver cheaper than I could have made a brick one.

Did you really need the Besta?. Could you have done it yourself. You're so good at it.

Probably not but it was just so easy to build around than having to be precise with building drawers and doors from scratch so it made sense for me at the time

Is the tile still adhered to the cabinetry one year later? If you live in a warm weather area that is frost free, you might be okay. A few items: 1) hardiboard cement board is water resistant, but not made for outdoor use 2) avoid putting a screw near the cut edge of cement board. You’ll crack it as I saw in the corner 3) fire block caulk is not needed. The cement board seams would be covered with alkali-resistant fiberglass tape and feather mortar over this tape. This will be an effective fireblock, plus reduce movement at the seams 4) applying adhesive - I hope you are using cementious mortar and not premixed water-soluble tile adhesive. The latter is for indoor not-wet applications only 5) agreed, heat resistant spray paint won’t provide add’l fire protection 6) Spray your backer board with water liberally before applying mortar. You mentioned working in the sun and it was hot. A dry cement board will wick moisture from the board causing the mortar to not set properly, especially in hot weather conditions 7) your notched trowel isn’t appropriate for the tile size/weight. You need bigger square or notches, not little v notches. That 1/8 inch v notch is only for subway tile or mosaics. Using that doesn’t leave enough mortar on the backer board, nor the tile when back-buttering 6) when you rake the trowel through the mortar, go perpendicular to the direction you intend to wiggle the tile. For example, your ‘wood’ tile - you wiggle up and down, then you should be raking side to side. The wiggling essentially collapses the mortar notches to ensure even coverage of mortar and minimizes air pockets 7) agreed, grouting dry stacked stone is an exercise in futility and will look like garbage.

That came out really nice. I'm considering trying to do something similar -- probably minus the flower beds on each side due to space. Can I ask what that rectangular piece was that went over the cinder blocks stacked vertically in the basin? I didn't see it on the shopping list. Also, is the surface bonding cement used inside the basin to make it water tight? Thanks.

Why did you not support the middle of where the concrete board is? That’s going to be the main supporting area of the concrete? Or did it not make sense to have a horizontal crossmember?

All of 👋 that... is just wrong. The blocks are porous. The insides are small to allow anything to take root well. Whatever she puts in there will suffocate and die. This is why people need to think, research and ask MANY QUESTIONS before building. Just cause you can, doesn't mean you should.
@paulab5888Ай бұрын
Thanks for the inspiration! I'm attempting this right now in my own home with the EKET cabinets (4 with drawers under the window, and two cabinets in the corner with 4 open for bookshelves above. It's a former kitchen window so it's up high, but this should give some coziness to the converted room that it lacks now.

The glue isnt the problem, the problem is the fact there is pea gravel under it, why block off root growth like that?
