Yeah, it's quite unfortunate. I've been following the two fires in this wilderness area all summer and this Wapiti fire has become significant. That entire lower section within 20 miles of Grandjean appears to be toasted. Very sad given how cool the woods in this area were. It'll certainly be a few years at this rate.

I'm doing this in a few days! when you say " I wound up taking his cautioned cross-country route 2/3rds the way through the trip" are you talking about the Park Fork "trail"that cuts across? How easy is that to find? How easy is it to find the trail again after that to get down towards yellow pass?
@tweedytreks5 ай бұрын
It's a wonderful area. If you haven't left yet, here's what I can relay. At the Snow Bank/Slide Creek Jnct. I stayed right, on Snow Bank. Then, in about 1.6 ish miles is where the game trail shortcut is. It's fairly recognizable, but not marked in anyway and you really have to be paying attention to notice it. Once about .3 miles in, it seemed to easily guide me all the way down to the S. Fork Big Crk-Iron Crk Trail. Keep in mind, again, this is a game trail. Unmarked. Unmaintained. Etc. Etc. One wrong turn and you're lost in some super thick woods. I do not recommend it for 98% of hikers. I read the guide book details on it like 6 times before doing it and that helped recognize where it was and what first couple moves to make before it guided me down. Tree downfall alone, could be horrendous at this point since I did this hike about 2-3 years ago. Anyways, just want you to have all the info I have. Be safe. Have fun. Cheers.

Have you thought of hiking the Uinta Highline Trail in Utah? It's 108 miles and you're over 10,000ft for about 80% of the time. It's a little different environment than most of the Rockies. It's a young mountain range, mostly red quartz, instead of gray granite peaks. It's a little variety compared to what you are probably used to. It is also very remote and not as trafficked. Sometimes you can go several days without seeing another person.

It was a primative trail that was good for about 50% of it until I basically got cliffed out and was doing some rather sketchy ledge walking for a couple different sections. I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS FOR ANYONE. If you do take this route, make sure to stick to the highlands the moment the trail gets iffy along the creek side. www.gaiagps.com/public/dzQSd2aSeUdCi5WNcEEZIoMe/ www.gaiagps.com/public/vsW3Lb6TJD1DjE7NAo3SjxDw/ www.gaiagps.com/public/PLCrSwnaxuHYstp1VYWZ5oJH/ Let me know if you can't access all the tracks in one view and I'll send over the mapped out Cal Topo route.

Awesome hike! Its hard to beat the Winds! I did a hike somewhat similar in 2021 but in reverse. Started at Elkhart TH to Island Lake, Titcomb, over Knapsack Col to Peak Lake then Shannon Pass to Elbow Lake, summit lake. I had the same thought about Borum Lake, stunning! Then past trapper, tons of blowdown between there and Glimpse lake, was really struggling to find the trail down to the minimum maintenance sign you showed in the video. Passed Long Lake and a brutal uphill back to Elkhart to end the trip. Really enjoying your videos!

Thanks again brotha. Appreciate the feedback. You’re not kidding though. That’s very very similar in reverse. Man, that section from Glimpse up to long, is a total headache and not enjoyable lol. I had it in greatttt condition too I’m sure of it. I can only imagine July and Aug in there. Those are the kind of miles where you’re really in your head a lot. Fortunately, those two sections were split up for me but still. They sucked! I’m with ya though. The winds are a fascinating place and I have it up there with the best of the best.

Thanks again. This is one of the best treks I’ve ever done. Easily. While Grizz are a legit concern, I wouldn’t let it hold you back. It’s such a popular area and you’d only be the 300th person each day soloing (just to use an arbitrary number)..but really there’s ample solo hikers. Being in grizz country is inherently eerie though. It should be ya know. But you know all the right things to do. I don’t think Glacier has had an attack since the 80s if I remember right. Glacier is a place you must see. There isn’t anything like it. Extremely unique landscape. Plan it!

nice video, been to wind river range, between the winds versus sawtooths which would you choose do do?
@tweedytreks11 ай бұрын
Such a difficult choice. They’re quite comparable and in my opinion, I don’t think you’re really picking one over the other for something obvious like: better lakes, views, summits, fishing etc. They’re both sooo similar in all those ways/attributes - they’re nearly perfect. For me though, I’d let weather and time of year decide for me. Assuming great weather in both areas, July 15-Aug 15, sawtooths. Aug. 15-Sept 15, winds. Weather and smoke being completely vital to both. Sawtooths commonly can get heavily smoked out. Winds can commonly have terrible weather windows. If I face either, I’m going to the other or even a 3rd different option. For me personally, how I wind up going to X place is in this order: 1. How badly do I want to go to X place? 2. Is the weather window good or better than good and predominantly smoke free? If both check out, then it’s on. If not, then I pivot. Of course, not everyone can do that and I feel very fortunate for where I live to be able to have that flexibility. Cheers and thanks for your support and feedback.

@@tweedytreks out of curiosity. How do handle filming and using trekking poles. I never use them because I am always carrying a camera/tripod. Just curious as I have a big hike coming and considering using some poles. Thanks again!
@tweedytreks11 ай бұрын
@SoloSchmitty yeah, it’s not easy/a perfect process at all but here’s what I do. 90% of the miles I’m doing, I’m holding the tripod (not-collapsed and usually horizontally) in one of my hands. Sometimes I use it like a single pole. In the other hand, I’m holding both trek poles and using them like one singular pole. So I hold the actual cork handle on one and then the actual pole itself just right under the handle on the other pole in one handful. This makes it to where the grasp in hand is still quite similar to just holding one pole in a hand. I rotate hands/arms with this technique as fatigue occurs. Shockingly, it works pretty well. A bit goofy finding your own groove but once you get your rhythm and feeling down it works well. Of course, I also will collapse the tripod and use both poles. I typically do this during significant incline/declines.

In fact, the day I finished the sawtooths was the first day of what would be 4-5 heavy heavy days of rain. The moody drones shots in the opener were all filmed that final day there so you can get the sense of the weather that was coming in. The white clouds will happen again though. I love that place. The 6 of us wound up doing a great 30 mile loop in the Eagle Cap Wilderness of Oregon. I didn’t film that though. Different agenda that trip. Nice touch with the mosquitos buzzing in the mic of the camera. Gave me that annoyed feeling like I was there with you. I think a lot of it has to do with the time of year - July is going to be bad no matter which range you are in. I’ve had pretty good luck with the lemon eucalyptus repellent (can’t stand the smell of Deet) but still use my head net - especially in my hammock. This video reminded me that I need to invest in a full net for my hammock or a hammock with it built in.

Yeah, July is almost always the worst month for skeeters. Even still though, it’s more just how notoriously bad they are in the area than time of the year. For here specifically. I backpack at least twice in July every year and while they’re always out, I’ve never been so overly annoyed by them lol. Truly relentless. The mic tells it all haha. I did 70 miles in the sawtooths the next week, skeeters were like 1% of the Beartooths lol. I too also use a lemon eucalyptus based spray and man did we go through it on this trip! Haha. Get the net!
