Thanks Jetscreamer for the comment. For sure. In my opinion, comic collectors do not pay enough attention to rarity. The most valuable books are often 1,000 times rarer (or more) than more modern ones. I created a video on the topic and would love your opinion. kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z5TPeGyAo9SMhbs

Thanks, Jerry. I was lucky enough to have a great mentor early in my collecting days who suggested pursuing the old, rare, and sought after books. IMHO, too many new collectors get snowed by dealers selling "rare" books that are actually common as dirt.

@kestonsoldschoolcomicbooks6842 you have accumulated a lot of wealth in the mind and it shows in your collection too. You are so generous in spending time educating people about this. Thanks a lot. I knew a lot about what you've posted in the videos but I went through some early aches and pains in the early 2000s, fortunately an old blue label for giant size x-men 9.2 never cost over 1000 so paying 900 back then for that was a rip off. I managed to hang on from 2010 till now. :)) The key is buying old, key appearance, and high grade. Most importantly is buying something you like and not worrying about it going to zero. I paid $1200 for incredible hulk 181 8.5 white in 2011. I was asking myself why I'm paying for this. Because I loved the comic. $1200 was insane money for hulk 181 8.5 white at the time.
@jerryking60214 күн бұрын
Nice video, i did exactly that in around 2011-2013, loaded up a bunch of graded superman and batman below #30. I grabbed a few batman $18 with hitler, mussolini and hirohito on the cover. Also a bunch of iconic joker covers #11, 23, 49. A decade ago everyone was chasing the MCU while batman movies were trash and nonexistent after the dark knight. Now decent grade batman comics are through the roof.
@kestonsoldschoolcomicbooks68424 күн бұрын
Thanks, Jerry. Nice strategy. Yeah, I was loading up on mostly golden age classic covers around the same time! Suspense 3, for example, had not seen much love between 2005 through 2015. It was mostly flat during that period from what I can tell.
@jerryking60214 күн бұрын
@kestonsoldschoolcomicbooks6842 nice job. I also grabbed 3 high grades FF48. Lots of sleepers during that time. They hype was xmen and spiderman. I think new mutants 98 was one of the craziest during that time. Hard to get any good golden age books now. No supply, high demand. Over 70 watchers on ebay for those types of auctions

Some notes about Crime SuspenStories 22 - According to an interview Bill Gaines did in 1985 (published in Comic Book Marketplace issue 80), the average sales per issue of CSS must have been somewhere around 350k to 400k. I say this because Gaines states that (prior to MAD taking off) the three horror titles led EC sales, with 400k to 450k per issue. He goes on to say that the science-fiction titles initially sold 300k per issue but then declined. He wraps up by saying that CSS and Shock SuspenStories sold better than anything except horror. Hence my guesstimate of 350k to 400k. And keep in mind that Gaines is apparently talking about sales figures, not print runs - which would be higher. It’s also worth pointing out a couple of other things… Collectors of pre-code horror comics often have a strong bias against slabbing their comics, because they wish to read the stories and savor the interior art. So CGC census figures probably underrepresent PCH comics overall - though maybe not CSS 22, which is an outlier in the sense that it’s the most expensive EC comic that’s fairly easy to find for sale in high grade. Based on my perusal of ads in RBCC fanzines from the mid-70s, at that time, CSS 22 was no more costly than CSS 21 or 23, so I assume that the stiff uptick in collector interest is a pretty recent thing. The conclusion I draw is that forward-thinking collectors and investors could have stockpiled CSS 22 for quite awhile without burdening their budget.
@kestonsoldschoolcomicbooks68425 күн бұрын
Great post Tom. Good logic there. My thought is that the number of surviving copies of CSS 22 is likely similar to showcase 4 that came out just a few years later in ‘56. Show has just over 600 slabbed and perhaps 1,000 exist today. I’d put css 22 at near or slightly below that number.

the x factor is that the kids now days dont read the comics and they dont have the desire to. they dont care or have any vested interest in the characters. they might watch the movies or shows on disney plus but they wont pay the prices of the books that dealers and collectors selling off their collections want. right now its guys selling to each other around the same age gap or the previous gen to the next gen. they have tried gimmicks like using game codes in some books and putting comic characters in some of the video games to get kids/teens interested but it doesnt seem to be working. plus book manipulation is being done to "UP" the grade and hopefully the value of the book. they do things like use chemicals to remove or lighten pen marks. they use light to make the whites of the book stand out more. its not yet classified as restoration but it actually is. any type of manufacturing/manipulation (ing) the condition of a book is restoration. some kids might grow up and remember their dad collecting comics and have memories with that but the other kids that grew up with them are more than likely not going to have that type of memory and wont care about owning a book of new mutant 98 because they watched deadpool in the theater. for comics to survive the prices are going to have to fall way down and people that jumped on the hype are going to have to take a big loss for things to balance out. demand for something is only as good as someone wanting something and actually paying a price for it. if nobody wants a book you have that you say is worth 1 million dollars, its worth nothing.
@kestonsoldschoolcomicbooks68426 күн бұрын
HI, Tony. Thanks for the thoughtful analysis. I admit that I glossed over future demand for comic books. It's likely worth its own video. With high likelihood, if appeal for a character fails to cross generations (like western stars) then the related comic books will fall. And, I agree that the younger generations (millenial and younger) aren't showing as much interest in comic books as Gen X and older. However, the big comic book characters are still very popular to them, albeit not through comic book consumption but rather through movies, tv shows, video games, etc. The unknown question is when these younger generations get older, and they have money, will they then seek the physical comic books? That's a big and important question. I have my theories :-)
@tonyhiland-js4dt6 күн бұрын
@@kestonsoldschoolcomicbooks6842 there will be that kid that grows up that just has art in his veins and is amazed someone took pen to paper and made something. but the tech kids wont pay the prices that people want for the books. other factors like housing are also coming into play as im sure the people that had been hit by the hurricane dont give one thought to comic books or the characters. holders of the books would like to think the prices will increase but it is unlikely. ive talked to me young family members and none of them are the slightest bit interested in comics and i asked about their friends and the same answer was none of them are interested either. my theory is superheroes will be around but not at the prices people think. plus we have to look at who is propping up the book sales. boomers and gen x and some millenials. once we die off, we wont care how the books are doing.
@kestonsoldschoolcomicbooks68425 күн бұрын
Thanks, Tony. I appreciate the insight. We'll see what happens. I do think an interesting sub-question is what books will outperform others. For example, I don't see Action 1 or Amazing Fantasy 15 plunging in value. My guess is that the legitimate cream will continue to rise...but the dregs will drop hard.
@tonyhiland-js4dt4 күн бұрын
@@kestonsoldschoolcomicbooks6842 superheroes wont completely die off but like i said, the industry is propped up by boomers/gen x/ and millenials. if i had to put money on it id say something like sonic or sponge bob or something nobody would expect would be the book that rises to the top. like for example i have a tmnt 1 first print. but that book doesnt even get mentioned. not that it bothers me its just a book for a niche market. like only turtle fans want that book. im a turtles fan. but are the kids growing up now going to want it when they become adults? will the turtles even be around when they become adults? ill be dead so i wont care. and the danger zone is the fact that books are getting to the point where the movie and tv industry is dictating what the comics do. comics thrived as a from of their own media and entertainment. now it seems they are reliant on movies and tv to stay relevant. a video game called marvel rivals seems to be popular among the younger crowd, but i dont think that is going to translate to them wanting to own a copy of the first appearance of wolverine. but one day we might find out.
@kestonsoldschoolcomicbooks68424 күн бұрын
@@tonyhiland-js4dt Thank you, Tony. We'll see. I do think that the TMNT1 is one book that will do o.k. from the more modern era. One of the reasons is low supply. The number of copies is more similar to an early '60s book than most bronze or copper age keys. As you said, we will see.

Millenials/Boomers Gen X cannot always tent pole the market- one day they'll literally die out and stay niche like stamp collecting, comic collectors will stay alive they're will still be viewed as valued but not nesserily deemed as demand in the past for popular charters- to grow! Unless well known/Iconic! we need to look at the *long* term future of comics. Gen Alpha would technically be the the next generation in Collectibles, most have no interest in collecting anything physically- maybe the odd exception like sneakers and video games- vinyls- then there is the fact that they don't generally give! af! along with young Gen Z's for the latter.^ Most are interested in instant gratification & they're phones- solely! In the rare exception they might have picked up the interest in Collectibles through older or charterful parents or self derived to like old! stuff! I think comics that are household names will still hold strong & get stronger re nm98 ih181 Spidey in general. But not alot of other characters they're appreciation in market values will lose pop culture interest- & will stay stagnant without constant movies/being incorporated into Gaming like fortnite that stay culturally relevant.
@kestonsoldschoolcomicbooks68428 күн бұрын
Hi, FCC! Thanks for the thoughtful post. I agree that we have to think generationally, especially if we are looking out to 2050 and beyond. I agree with you that the major keys and characters will likely be o.k., especially the older books. For example, it's hard to imagine Spider-man losing cultural relevancy in 2050. That said, I agree that unless Gen Z gets involved in collectibles in a big way, that the more peripheral characters will fall into obscurity. And, any books that have high numbers of surviving copies likely won't have the collector base to support high prices.

Prediction: Little by little, demand will grow for Golden Age comic books with striking covers that do not depict well-known characters. Furthermore, some specific comics will start to attract attention from the fine-art world. By 2075 there will be some big-dollar Golden Age books that are largely unknown today. (My current candidate for future stardom is Captain Aero issue 22 with that cool Art Deco-flavored cover by L..B. Cole.)
@kestonsoldschoolcomicbooks68428 күн бұрын
Hi, Tom. Shoot. Just sent a long reply and It was deleted. In short, I think that silver- and golden age books will be fine in 2075. They will benefit from two or three rounds of movies by then. The big characters will continue to be big. I don't think more modern books will fair as well except for the obvious ones like hulk 181, asm 129, tmnt1, and asm 300. Golden age covers -- you know that's my sweet spot :-)...and I hope you are right. Happy New Year, my friend!!

Aaargh, your reply eaten by KZbin! Been there, done that, bought the T shirt and cursed the Internet. Yes, I agree that the really well-established characters and truly iconic covers will continue to command interest. As you’ve ably demonstrated, the roster of biggest-dollar books has not changed much since the early ‘70s. I’m seeing a lot of room for change in the list of, oh, maybe the 500th through 101st most expensive books.

That Superman #1 .5 on the left looks like chop suey and the right side I would pay a big premium also on that one when the cover looks like a 6-7.0 it looks gorgeous despite the back missing. The one on Hakes .5 this year went for 88k I believe? If that other .5 that you showed was up for auction I wouldn’t bet against it going for double the Hakes copy. Due to it looking incredible.
