That's because those kind of shows are only now making a comeback after decades of being forgotten. These were more common on American tv in the 50s-70s.

Inside Man is a weird one because, yes, it's not very good. I do however think there's some subtext to the vicar character taking the blame, basically a "good christian" willing to sacrifice himself for the greater good but like... also... is willing to assault a woman and protect a pedophile. How the rest of the story plays out isn't great but I feel like there's some hint of an interesting phycology and themeatics to it. Just didn't hit the landing.

What annoys me about the invention of lying is how the hell does lying even work on people? Surely they'd just conclude the person is just mistaken or deluded without assuming they aren't saying the truth.

I didn't like the scene in Derik where he refused the autism test because there are a LOT of parents of autistic kids who don't get their kids tested or withhold their diagnosis for the same logic and it turns out to nearly always be the wrong decision. Also I don't think Ricky Gervais is neurotypical and I think that's part of why he was able to get away with Derik.

I cringed so hard at the clips of US WILTY I had skip it, maybe if Bill Burr and Dave Chapelle were part of the show it would be at least a bit entertaining to watch. Other than that, the US remakes of our shows are complete dog shit! The Inbetweeners, Skins, The Office, WILTY, Whose Line Is It Anyway and Shameless are but a few.

I feel like the American versions just don't have celebrities of the same calibur. The D-listers on there are all trying out for a role in something bigger, and consequently they try to please everyone by not being potentially offensive or laughing too hard at anything potentially offensive.

IMO, the problem with all these American panel show adaptations is that they're Americans. Nothing against Americans, but what makes the system work in the UK is that the average brit is an adept piss-taker. We grow up ripping the piss out of our mates and ourselves through school to adulthood, and all that time we're surrounded by others doing the same. Our parents joke the same way about themselves and their friends, and even at you their children. And you see everyone else's parents and friends and family and whoever else doing the same. By the time a Brit has hit their 20s, they've got a good dozen or so quips committed to memory for frequent situations, and have developed the wit to crack jokes instinctively when someone doesn't choose their words quite carefully enough. The average American though, seems to entirely lack this ability. That's why they think of the British as being "witty" and having some sort of special sense of humour (Which is actually just being able to accurately understand the concepts or irony, sarcasm, and introspection - something most people can do). The result is that a panel show in the UK, though it might get fantastic comedians, doesn't need them to work. HIGNFY for example, generally only features 3 actual comedians at most, and often obscure ones. Merton is the regular comedian, Hislop is a journalist by trade, and the panel often features politicians, journalists, and such as it's guests rather than just "funny men". Both Merton and Hislop have a very good grasp of comedy for sure, but they're not stand-up comics. That's why "Would I lie to you?" works in the UK. The stories are interesting and believable,. if outlandish, sure. But more often than not they open the 'owner' up to embarrassment. They prime the panel with an almost endless opportunity to take the piss, the only question then being how exactly do you wish to take the piss? But Americans don't seem to be able to do this on the whole, and the stories on the US version are as mentioned often not stories at all. Taking that banana bread example, it's typically American in that it doesn't embarrass the owner at all. It's not that they ate it, and discovered to their horror what had happened, but rather they were just a 'jerk' to use a US term. There's limited options to take the piss, because it's actually just a totally morally reprehensible thing to do, and because the person telling the story isn't the victim of the events, there's no real ability to take the piss out of them, or for them to joke about themselves either. That story boils down to "I had the opportunity to prevent something bad happening to my friends, but chose to let it happen anyway". As a Brit my instinct is to chase the line of inquiry that is "Do you hate your friends? Are they even your friends at all? Are you actually confessing to food tampering (very illegal) on live TV" and grill them for that, but it's a very edgy line to chase - it might be funny if they give the right answers, but otherwise it's just a delve into their morally corrupt mind, not very good TV that. Anyway TLDR: Yanks can't take the piss, making them reliant on top-quality comics to be funny. They can't get top quality comics, and even if they could, top quality American comics are almost always trying to be the winner. As Stephen Fry once said about it; John Belushi in Animal house is what all American comics aspire towards. Walk down the stairs in a toga, smash up the guitar of the tragic bloke trying to sing a song for one or two ladies, wiggle his eyebrows and everyone laughs. A British comic would want to play the part of the guy with the guitar.

Gavin and Stacey was always so beautiful, it’s filled with heart and I think American media can’t accept they don’t understand British humour and it’s so clear how try hard these American adaptations are and it’s honestly heartbreaking to see, I think it hurts knowing that no matter what we feel, the US and UK will always try and adapt each other no matter what anyone feels about it because of the simple fact it’s easier than coming up with new ideas ):

So i watched dracula once a long while back, and the 'deacula fears the cross' thing at the time seemed to me to be a mis-reading of the nun, speaking to her character and the stuff that lives in her head rent free. Basically, a nonbelieving nun seeking evidence of the existance of god, looks at a problem and concludea the wrong thing, ignoring key evidence, because of her bias. But that might be me giving it too much credit. Also at this point i paused your video and, for the life of me, i don't remember if dracula actually did fear the cross in this one. In any case, that was my interpretation at the time, which made the showing and reshowing us the sun reflecting on the cross a choice aimed the nake the audience groan because they understand something the nun refuses to understand. Edit:nvm. Feating the cross is apparently a key point in ep3 - i have burned that out of my memory. I would like to add that i enjoyed eps 1&2 and absolutely hated ep3, which retroactively ruined my enjoyment and i will never watch it again.

If America did a ton of panel shows for 50 years, they'd probably get used to it. The problem is simply that the American comedy scene is virtually all stand-up and as a result none of them know how to be collaboratively funny.

As some others have pointed out, the US has no banter, but to add on top of that, US TV is full of censorships. You can't be making edgy jokes or make fun of someone else for the sake of banter cus then some Karen would go "that is so mean". You can't make self-deprecating jokes either cus then you will seem weak, Americans can't stand being a butt of a joke, and their celebrities has to always be the star of whatever they're in so there is no bouncing off jokes. Sure, there are comedians that aren't like this, but thsy sure aren't casting them.

I think the biggest disparity is watching a US episode and then Bob Mortimer. Bob Mortimer, accidentally fell into TV and comedy by just being a normal person having fun going against the grain. These celebrities (no idea who they are) are there because they want to be famous, they’re desperate for success.

You totally cracked me up with your edit at 15 mins. I was belly laughing! Americans sometimes don’t get cynicism. But I will say they are starting to. Certain sitcoms get it. But yeh, panel shows, yeesh.

Yeah Stan? UK is better? Then please tell me why after the most insane bat-shi*t crazy "TRUE" story there's never any follow-up and nobody has to prove it with a photo or an eye witness? Bob Mortimer can claim he was abducted by space-aliens looking like Mick Jagger and Bryden will say "Yes, it's true, Bob Mortimer was abducted by space-aliens who looked like Mick Jagger." ... AND THEN THE BUZZER ENDS THE EPISODE WITHOUT ANY FURTHER EXPLANATION, LIKE WTF??

I just recently read a post about this on Dropout's reddit: the idea was that UK comedians base their humor on absurd or uncomfortable situations, while US comedy is rooted more in observational humor, and that's why the show translated badly. Seeing these examples really seems to confirm this.

Americans just can't be natural on TV. Everything is hammed up and performancey. It's like this with sitcom adaptations too. The Office even is like this. I actually love the US Office but it completely loses the realism and naturalism of the original which made it so special. With panel shows it's even more pronounced. They all seem like they are performing and not in a natural conversation. I don't know why, but they just can't pull it off.

You might be overthinking this. I don't think there is a systemic failure in comedy types, just a weak first-off execution. WILTY didn't start well in UK either. Rob Brydon isn't the original host, he had Lee Mack's role. Watch those early episodes and see the difference. USA definitely has very funny improv comedians. Whose Line is it anyway proved that (even if you have to dip into Canada). The USA WILTY execution has started badly, but get guys like Kellen Erskine, Dusty Slay, Josh Sneed, Leanne Morgan, and it will really take off. They will bring existing followers with them.
