Did you say "dont twll me i cant dig in toronto parks" or something like that near the beggining of the video? I live a couple hours north of toronto and was going to visit my grandmother in Toronto and it was like February or something so i asked on reddit if there was snow on the grass because i wanted to detect, and someone asked where i would be detwctinf and i said park, and holy shit i got a zillion people on reddit downvoting me saying i cant dig in toronto, meanwhile im in the Toronto metal detecting facebook group and i see all those people hunt in parks no problem Technically metal detecting is banned in toronto parks, someone posted a link, but ive seen park employees before and they dont say anything

I tried Lake Ontario out here in Durham. They were super dirty and I spent most of my time picking up sparkler remains. I’m still learning though.

With this hobby you need patience. They say 1000 pull tabs for every gold ring. Keep at it. They’re out there.

I was at a KOA today showing off my new MD to my father in law and by chance where I waved it I found a solid repeatable high tone. Didn’t dig it because it’s private property. I’ll just tell myself it was a pull tab.

Do you dig everything? I’ve been told to ignore low tones because it’s probably iron. I’m very new to detecting and still learning.

Only way to learn is to start off by digging it all. A great variety to be found and the better you will learn the machine. Unfortunately if you are ignoring the low tones you will miss out on a lot of gold. Gold will always fall in the low tone range unless it’s big. Chains of all sorts will also be a lower broken type signal because the machine reads the individual links rather than the complete chain. There’s a science behind it and I’m also still learning 10 years later. All the best and good luck!

I will be getting my first metal detector this week. I'm not in Toronto but you're just about the most local detectorist I can find on youtube - great find and hopefully we'll see more videos in 2024!

Dont know about a year ago, but....... Metal detecting in Toronto Parks on any turf or grassy areas are a bylaw infringement, only beach or sand covered areas in parks are allowed metal detecting in Toronto parks

I go where the treasure leads me. Pick up my trash and take it with me. In and out without evidence. Smile to passer bys, or anyone watching. The occasional wave and hellos work good too.if they want to kick me out I leave. Not too difficult

The pin seems to related to the order of the garter and the royal engineers. It's likely British origin and probably pretty old.

there are better ways of cleaning coins. If any of those coins had any collectors value before you tumbled them. you destroy that value putting them in the tumbler.

Plenty of other videos to comment negatively on as well. I clean my coins how I chose. If a collector wanted them they should buy a detector and find them themselves. Catch my drift?

Yes. I fitted a magnet at the bottom of the scoop for the small ferrous metals. Can’t be chasing junk for longer than I have to.

Hello skid , great find . I have a question you most likely heard a lot , I live in North York , and I just acquired my first metal detector, what areas are we able to detect in ? And or do we need a permit of some kind to do so ? Pls unsure prospector .

Hey there! No bother at all. I do get that question quite a bit actually. All I can say is if really unsure with bylaws in your city call city hall and ask. Be sure to let them know that you are not out there to destruct property. Be sure to make it clear that you leave no mess behind yourself. In most cases I’ve never had an issue. Areas like Mississauga and Markham are off limits though. They do not allow it. Although it does ultimately depend on how the bylaw officers feel at the time. It’s just best to not make the hobby and fellow hobbyists look bad. Best to just stay out of restricted areas. North York I believe any public property is good to go. I’m sure I can go a little more in depth than this quick reply but I hope it’s helps. Thanks for the support in subbing! Stay in touch maybe get out sometime! Happy Hunting!

What temperature outside do you start metal detecting? Can you dig into dirt thats just 1 degree?

Depends. After a long frosty winter the ground stays solid for some time. Best spots are area that were blanketed by snow early as the snow will insulate the ground and keep it somewhat thawed. Not always the case but seems to help the situation.

Great spot and what a way to start with a last year largie! 👍Nice haul of silver and sweet to pull a couple shiny quarters! Always great for silver rings those places. That first one looked silver all day long! Cool pin. Wonder if it’s a school pin but could definitely be military with the crown on it. Sweet old buckle! Likely a remnant of older activity going on there. ATB and happy hunting!
