It's so interesting to hear this piece without drums and bass - it's a very different experience! I also loved the differences in the embellishments you chose to add.
@OriolePublishing Жыл бұрын
Thank you Sean! Happy that you have enjoyed my recording - I'm so glad I even managed to record and preserve it. The embellishments were something I thought to just differentiate (without veering too far off) my recording from others' who tend to follow the written score to the tee.

Hello! Thanks for your compliment This rendition is just a reference - the wind quintet is free to perform it at any tempo they determine :)

If I still played in quintet I would love this! I would say it’s missing the dynamics for a lot of it. I would be more mindful of the articulation marks as well. Since quintet doesn’t have a conductor, those are very important. What program do you use? It doesn’t sound like how I remember finale. I think some of the flute part gets low, not unplayable, but hard to get a good sound around the middle/bottom of the staff if playing in a group. Just something to be aware of, you may want to consult a real flute player as I majored in bassoon but picked up other woodwinds.

Thanks for your comments! We have carefully considered your comments and these are our responses At Oriole Publishing, we closely model the arrangements after Composer’s original scoring (as far as we can tell from an original scoring), striving to adhere to Composer’s original intentions for the scorings. We do not endeavour to come up with any unnecessary markings that may or may not obscure from what they had in mind. Some Composers are more directive in their markings whilst others are not highly prescriptive in every dynamic or markings. This is to be expected. As best as we can, we strive to follow the Composer’s original intentions for the scoring, and then leave it to the performer to work out their own interpretations. On the point of the lower/middle register of the flute: If you or any flute player have an issue getting a good sound around the middle or bottom part of the register for fear or not being able to deliver an adequate sounds vis-à-vis other performers, maybe they should work on their own tone first and reconsider playing in a very small group such as a wind quintet, let alone an ensemble, a wind band or even an orchestra. Perhaps the level of difficulty of the music is not suitable. Composers since time immemorial have intentionally written passages whether solo or not for the middle and lower registers of the flute to bring out different tone colours or deliver a different expression. We don’t see them restricting themselves to writing for the higher registers of the flute all the time just because someone felt the middle/bottom notes of the flute are “hard to get a good sound”. Thankfully, they did not restrict themselves, otherwise we won’t have some of the most famous orchestra flute solos such as in Dvorak’s New World Symphony, Mendelssohn’s Midsummer Night Dream, or Debussy’s Afternoon of a Faun. At Oriole Publishing, we take the same approach of arranging parts for the flute that showcases the beauty of the flute sound in all of its registers, low, middle or high. It will be a tremendous mis-opportunity to write exclusively higher registers for the flute just to make the part easier for the flute player. We expect that the Wind Quintet and flute player, in choosing to play in a small ensemble such as Wind Quintet, have attained a suitable competency in their respective instruments to be able to not only hold their own, but listen, respond to and partner adequately with their Quintet colleagues, in ways that retain the integrity of the music and deliver an engaging performance. By the way I am a real flute player and I love to express lower and middle registers in the Wind Quintet arrangements because they deliver different tone colours in melodic messages or a chance to better tone down to blend with my colleagues in accompaniment passages. I believe that Wind Quintet is a teamwork and every of the 5 instrument should have a chance to shine. Being the highest sounding instruments does not mean the flute needs to shine and stand out all the time.

Great job! One thing though, don’t be afraid to put the bassoon on higher notes when necessary, for reference, d (octave above middle c) is about as high as Reittier requires but I can go higher on my bassoon

Hi @NY-AN, yea definitely will explore that! High registers on High Bassoon sounds good for solo, abs many composers have utilitised that too.

It's been almost 40 years ago when I played this on piccolo in my university symphonic band in the early 80s. I haven't played for over 35 years and now, when I picked up my picc to follow the notes my fingers don't move as quick and smoothly! I guess you lose what you don't use! Always liked this piece!
