lol i literally do that technique myself starting at a low tempo then going up by one on the metronome , i realize anyone can be great at piano if you just practice slow enough for the mind and fingers to catch up to one another

I love Beethoven's sonata in C major, reason : I play mostly in C. Easy??? Till I knew what Chopin teaches : starting with black keys, (because the design of keyboard,black keys are natural for the human hands to reach). This fact I heard from a piano saleswoman who was also a concert pianist 40years ago " music in C is hardest to play ! "

I so enjoyed that. At 96 her strength and precision of her playing was a marvel. Great left hand independance. Helped by her judicious pedal usage there was space between the notes which I loved the most. It seemed slower, but was it? Maybe. I just loved hearing it that way. She was at the "Curtis Institute of Music" when she was like 10 years old with Jorge Bolet!! Shura Cherkassky!, and Samuel Barber. They all marelled at knowing Barber was the genius of the group. Can you imagine the people she has met? Wishing you many more years Ruth! Best.

You are so right, a few mistakes do not matter. The artist/pianist/ great human being Ruth Slenczynska manages so well to bring out the inherent beauty of the music. Truly a beautiful performance.

I'm very curious what Rachmaninoff' told her that she believed would not be popular today. He was Russian, so he definitely was as soft and cajoling to tip-toe around "offending" the student's "self-esteem". I came from a hardcore German, stoic stock and am impatient with weakness. If you have something to say, say it.

Wow did she really sight read this piece ? It looks like she is performance to concert grade by sight reading a piece she has rarely seen. That is remarkable on so many levels.
@glaucoma8882 жыл бұрын
What makes you think RS is sightreading during a concert? Let me suggest you research who she is, then rethink your comments here.

@@glaucoma888 she is the last remaining pupil of serge rachmaninoff who once said she had the genius of Frank Liszt and the power of Robert Schumann
@RevantuZ2 жыл бұрын
Hah, no, the description says it was on the program - it's also not normal to sight read in a concert, ever. Sight reading means to play something without having learnt it. At her age I imagine she can learn pieces but probably doesn't have the memory anymore to play without the sheet music to guide her. Learning =/= memorizing
@michaelsmith6972 жыл бұрын
She is certainly NOT sight reading. She has learnt and studied this work in great detail and mastery. At her age she needs the music to guide her. I’m now 67 and find memorising more difficult and time consuming - however I can still do it! When I was 18 I would memorise in no time at all. Sight reading is a different type of playing altogether.

I never met Ruth Slenczynska but I went to school (UMKC) with Shelley Moorman Stahlman. I've become fascinated with this wonderful pianist. I especially loved her video about her studies with Josef Hoffman and other Curtis teachers and alumnists. I studied with Abbey Simon who she mentioned. I wish I could still speak to him about his associations with Mme. Slenczynska.
