Learned to drive on both my dad’s 69 Thunderbird powered by a 429 Thunderjet, and my grandmother’s 67 Bettle. Lol! Had to be so careful off the line with the skinny pedal on the Tbird, as it would easily smoke the rear tire. Gobs of torque on demand.

I think the 289 in the Avanti was Studibaker sourced, not Ford. And 1962 Cobras, which were English, never had any motor that was not a big block.

I ran my ‘66 goat at Vaca Valley Speedway in “F” stock automatic in ‘68 and ‘69. The 389 ran with three 350 Holleys through a Tempest Torque 2 speed transmission coupled to a 513 rear end. It did the quarter in the low 12’s consistently with a top end of 93 mph. That puppy could pull some g’s off the line.

The definition of torque is ,waking up in the morning with a whiskey hard on and when you push it down to aim your feet lift off the floor that is torque

@@srt8rocketship241 Ed Pink was a really nice guy. I ran 390-410 wedges and I called his shop and he shared a lot of information about the wedges and it made me a school parking lot scientist! He was the builder for Connie Kallita, and a lot of the Cammers, and Sam Auxier did bunch. Pete Robinson designed the gear drive. A lot of greats cut their teeth on the 90 day wonder that was good to 2500-3000 hp. But it was designed to run against the 392 Hemi. When the Elephant was getting up to today’s 10,000 hp, it would take an aftermarket block to stay in the same zip code. I wish Austin Coils Ford had been allowed.

@Bbbbad724 there is a race blocking ck disassembled at Garlits museum in Ocala FL. Don says it would be a contender today in Top Fuel if Ford had not pulled the plug.

@Bbbbad724 Pontiac Olds and Buicks are not 'fragile' what they are torque engines, and thus they don't need much RPM. The chevy is lacking toque, even the 454s are weak suck for torque, despite the claim in this video the LS6 made 500ftlbs. The chevy needs rpm because they are short runner engines, whereas BOP have long high velocity intake ports. People trying to make a 455, especially Pontiac, spin to 7000rpm like a 350 sbc would fling the rods out of them. The chevy engines are weak suck until you throw the aftermarket at them. They heads, headers, intake, carbs, big cams, deep gears, big stall, just to keep up with a 455 using highway gears and factory parts. EVERY time someone puts a 4.xx gear behind one, it goes slower than it would with a 2.73-3.55 gear, unless they profoundly increase the airflow through the heads, as in over 130cfm. Except that the 455 will still make unholy mind bending torque with much larger ports, and still at low RPM, as in 2000 to 5000. No need to RPM them higher than 5800, they stop pulling anyway. Keep the doofuses from trying to turn them into a sbc and they do quite well. I have a 400 Pontiac that I built in 1995, its been in 7 vehicles I own. Currently its in a 72 Ventura that I am getting running. Have a 455 that I built in 1996 and it even has cast pistons, and with 8.8:1 compression and a 224/[email protected] cam it pushed my 4000lb 70 GTO through the quarter in the 12.60s with a 2.93 gear, 1900 stall, and no power adders. I drive these things hard, and I have raced them since the 1980s. Fragile is not a word that fits them... Oh and the hilarious thing I discovered.. That 400 Pontiac with iron heads and the water pump and aluminum dual plane intake, weighs only 40lbs more than an aluminum head iron block 5.3 LS, long block, no intake, exhaust, accessory drive, water pump, etc. A 455 is less than 20lbs heavier than a 400, or a 350, even a 326 for that matter. You can get 500ci in the same space as an LS or 350 sbc, and not enough weight difference to be noticeable.
@Bbbbad7246 күн бұрын
@@SweatyFatGuy I agree, but it’s few people who don’t try to make another 500 rpm. I have seen it too. The 400 is a better choice than a 455, I love the 400! The 389 6V, man. I have seen a few scattered 455s . I hated it, and Buicks that lost their prime and you could move the crank fore and aft 3/8 inch. It is a shame. 440s too. I don’t like knocking any engines. I’m an FE guy bleeding blue. But I have worked with them and had a blast.
@SweatyFatGuy6 күн бұрын
@@Bbbbad724 yeah the Buick has that oil pump issue, otherwise they are a great engine. Pontiac is a lot like a 390-428 FE, not a lot of RPM but lots of low and mid range torque. I used to run them in the 80s and 90s, but sold all of my 390s. Too much $$$. I would love to put a 428 in my 67 Cougar though.
@SweatyFatGuy6 күн бұрын
@@Bbbbad724 the 455 is a lot better than 400s, so easy to make a 455 run 11s with factory parts and highway gears. I still do 400s, but usually I put a 4.25" crank in them and enjoy the grunt.
