I think the low quality skyboxes feel more immersive because it reflects what we see with our eyes better. A low LOD 3D model in the distance is always going to look too sharp yet not complex enough, whereas a low res image lets your brain more easily fill in the gaps because the detail is baked into whatever art or photo the skybox is using. I find that old Monster Hunter games have some of the most stunning landscapes in the series purely because everything has to be done with a skybox and they use some really cool techniques that make just have a vibe you can't get with newer mostly 3D backgrounds (though the skyboxes in the later games are often great, they aren't doing nearly as much legwork and therefor aren't as impactful).

it's also really really really hard to get realistic lighting on landscapes with 3D, all of the slight idiosyncrasies add up and while it still looks good most of the time it lacks the realism you can get in a literal photo or painting.

I remember an occurrence where there was a buzzard (the normal version, not the police version) along with some police vehicles on a mountain. I don’t remember which one, but I remember this happening in single player and have never been able to find anything on it.

I can't wait for Austin to do a video on Red Dead 2. There's so much potential for a video in that game from this dude. Red Deads world is full of empty places but the environmental storytelling is all there. That's where Bethesda shines in my opinion, they have such great environmental storytelling that you can come across an empty, eerie place, but come across bodies and objects that allow you to come up with the story yourself. (Yes I know, Bethesda is not Rockstar)

I hope you do more of these. I love seeing people check out random, amateur cheap/free games... and I'm not just saying that becauae I make stuff like that. There are so many simple little games out there, varying in quality, but even the bad ones can make for interesting content with the right approach.

Is it worth noting a potential GDP increase as the player levels up and more advanced products appear in shops? If the player doesn’t level but just passes time, the products don’t change. If the player levels, higher-tier stuff comes into the shops. What’s the effect of player agency here?

Playing Skyrim on PS3. I was looking for the restoration teacher in the college of Winterhold. Looked for him for hours thought he died or despawned. Turns out he wedged himself between the open entry gate and a grey brick wall. He we stuck there for many in game days before I found him.

Words cannot describe how much i hate the map of GTA 5, it feels so lazy and rushed even though its the complete opposite. I've waited years for GTA 4 when SA was the newest but it was worth it every day. And I've waited years for GTA 5 just to be completely disappointed. I love Rockstar and TakeTwo, they're one of my favourite studios/publishers but GTA 5 was a big letdown for me. Strange enough, i still own it on multiple platforms and also the next gen versions. It is still a Rockstar title which alteady says enough but if i had to rank it, it would be at the last place of all 3D GTA titles.

absolutely love the concept and commentary on this. but i think what u suggest as most boring is actually still interesting. there's a clear trodden path suggesting the presence of living behaviour. whether it's humans, or like my cats have created, a little route through the wildlife. it still tells a story.
