@dondashall6 ай бұрын
No, the reason is because it's mean. That there's other things to criticize is a good point, but that's not the reason. Replace it with any other kind of prejudice. @dondashall the comparison doesn't line up, though. To be clear, I'm not saying it is okay to be fat phobic. It isn't. but the example isn't the same thing. Putting that aside, yes it is mean to fat shame and we shouldn't do it, but the point of @johnsanko4136 comment is, Steven Seagal did a lot of things actually deserving of Mockery, putting on weight isn't one of those things. It's meaningless to make fun of him for something like that because that is not the actual problem with that guy and it's mocking hip for superficial stuff. And I'll add that yes, it's mean, and it's also making fun of other overweight people who don't deserve to be mocked.

In the spirit of shaming Seagal for who he is, there is a story that should be mentioned. Way back when, at the height of Van Damme's career, Seagal would mock and deride Van Damme a lot. Sylvester Stallone decided to have some fun and invited Seagal to a house party...and invited Van Damme without telling Seagal. Van Damme confronted Seagal at the party about Seagal's mockery and Seagal ran down the street, trying to escape Van Damme. Your analogy on overweight people in martial arts can be applied to comedy to a degree. Chris Farley was fat, but it worked in his favour, as a lot of his comedy relied on the energy he brought to his roles (Like running throughout a studio audience and carrying someone to a giant bin, dancing with Swayze in a Chippendales routine, and falling on a coffee table to get a reaction out of the audience and cast members). You got the feeling that he liked to change it up every so often, as it could be an act that could get quite old. Compare this to someone like Melissa McCarthy, where a lot of her comedy is just falling down, and falling down, and falling down. Many of the films she's in, like Life of the Party or Tammy, rely on this one punchline to carry the picture, even though it's just lazy slapstick ("Isn't it funny when a fat person falls down? Please laugh.").

I think Segal's weight does accentuate his terrible acting when he's trying to (poorly) play some sort of super elite "operator". The image of a rather fat spec ops dude would probably make audiences raise an eyebrow at the best of times, but because of how horribly he plays those characters in general, it seems to just emphasize it. Like, the infamously bad sniper movie, where it looks like he's never held a gun before, and then he's fat on top of that, so people associate him with a stereotypical airsofter or something. Also, you skipped the part where he moved to Russia and became a propagandist for them.

Then towards the latter part of his career I became more and more disappointed and then disillusioned with him. His films were low quality, repetative and he just didn't seem to put any effort into anything he was doing. He had gone from being an actor to a guy who would just turn up for five minutes so the studio could put his face on the DVD and say "Starring Bruce Willis" when his actual input was near zero. Then I learnt about his dementia and it all made sense. Here was a guy who was working for as long as he could to ensure the long term security of his family. A man who was planning for a bleak future with a courage and stoicism that is rarely seen. Of course he wasn't his usual self in those films, he was struggling against his symptoms. I am confused. Are you defending Steven Segal being fat or defending fatness in general? Or both? It’s one of those. I am sure of it. Either way, people are allowed to feel how they want to about fat, thin, short, tall or whatever people. Calling me prejudice because I have a preference is insincere. Why do I have to like fat people? Or tall people? Etc… Also, it’s not a disability. Sure there are many reasons someone can be fat, but most obesity is due to poor diet and sedentary lifestyle. Let’s not beat around the bush. Let’s stop making excuses for people for no reason. Also, only the smallest minority of people make fun of fat people in the gym. People that go to gym are so supportive of fat people in the gym because we are aware of how easy it can be to lose motivation. Trust me. I really like your videos, I just respectfully disagree with this one.

As a fat person I want to thank you for this video. Fat shaming is never ok - and I've never seen a case of fat shaming that the person doesn't have countless other - better & substantial - things to shame them for. The person you're fat shaming will likely never read your comments, but your friends and family will (not so much an issue on youtube, but speaking more broadly) and it will hurt them.

Hopefully this isn't rude, but since you mentioned that sometimes people believe that your videos are read by AI, I wanted to share an observation about it that might explain why native English speakers might come away with that impression, and it is totally not your fault! You see, most East Asian languages (Mandarin, Vietnamese, Korean, Telugu, as well as French and Yoruba) are syllable-timed languages, whereas English is a stress-timed language; we elongate and enunciate (usually) just one syllable of any words we speak, and the other syllables are then compressed (sometimes they will even change their pronunciation based on the surrounding sounds,whereas this doesn't happen as often with stressed syllables). Note that most languages have ways of marking stressed/unstressed syllables in speech, and timing is just one means. In Mandarin, stess is conveyed by tone rather than time. SO, the reSULT is that in MULtisyllABic WORDs, we EMphasize parTICular SOUNds and omIT OTHers BASEd on what SOUNds "right." the FUNniest thing aBOUt this, is that dePENding on what LANguage we BORrowed or inHERited the speCIFic MULtisyllABic WORD, the EMphasis CHANges from the FIRST, · SECond, or SECond to LAST · SYLable (penULTimATe). ALso, when you creATE · COMpound words or WHEN you CONjugate A·nother, the EMphasis might CHANge from one SYLLable to the NEXT, as with SYLable and MULtisyllABic, or EMphasis VERsus emphaSIZE. FINally, SOME words will BE emphasized or NOT emphasized BASEd on the adJACEnt words. for exAMPle WORD or BE might be EMphasized dePENding on HOW they are BEing USEd in the SENtence, and WHAT words are emPHAsized beSIDE them; it's imPOSSible to generATE conSIStent RULEs that CAN be FOLlowed WITHout EXception. YOU just HAVE to BE · FAMiliAR · WITH the EXcepTIONs. You just couldn't get away with that in a syllable-timed languages, and it's one of the reasons why native English speakers struggle the most with languages like Mandarin or French, but Spanish and Arabic are some of the easiest languages for us to pick up. I personally think that the rhythm with which you speak is lovely because of the linguistic biography it conveys, but if you are still trying to shed it, I cannot recommend karaoke enough, even if only in the shower 😂; lyrical music is always marked indelibly with the rhythms and inflections of the culture in which it was written and performed. There's a whole lot of theory that goes into it from an academic perspective, but also from an industrial entertainment perspective. If you ever have a chance to listen to or read the interviews with Disney's international musical translators, it is well worth your time. The fact that in Mandarin, your tone going up or down can literally completely change the word you are speaking makes for an incredibly fascinating challenge when translating FROM a language where that doesn't even begin to effect the semantics.
