Ryan your story is truly inspirational I'm at a loss for words actually I know exactly of the things in the situations in the things you do my husband is James Martz aka Lobo. You've been in prison with him and his story is yours and yours is his. He is right on that brink of changing completely but anyways there's so much that goes along with that not enough time now to talk about it but you could I believe what takes him over that edge. He was just stabbed 20 times over a year ago by the same men that he once led in his gang. He has went through so many challenges with that and now is back there on a five to life for brass knuckles that was a belt buckle. They are trying to charge him with being a habitual criminal, a 5-life for a belt buckle. Right before he turned himself in we were going to church and he's changing. His p.o. even acknowledged it with the board. Ryan he needs you as a mentor and example of bravery, and strength. Thank you so much for being that light... I can't quit crying after this podcast. My name is Jill Martz you can reach me at (385) 418- 2457. You are what's going to make the difference. ❤

I enjoyed this guest. I have two daughters both in recovery. I was always confused why I didn’t understand addiction. So, hearing the view from another Mother I don’t feel so alone. I’m here to support my daughters in their journey with sobriety. But, I’m still open to understanding the struggles of addiction by being involved with my daughters recovery. But, to know that I’m not alone is refreshing. I totally agree with Mechelle , I appreciate the police officers they’re why my girls are alive. They have always been respectful and kind to me. The judges and AP and P officers have been helpful. I’m so tired of the disrespect of people to police officers. I think they have one of the hardest most unthankful jobs. Lorie

I spent 40 months in prison. I made one horrible mistake. I was a successful business women for 20+ years. The stigma I have being a felon was really hard to deal with when I was first released. I read your book and I loved it. I tutored at the school in prison and enjoyed it! I was surprised how many women didn’t have a high school diploma. I had a bachelors degree and enjoyed working with the women! I now own my own business so I don’t have to deal with the stigma.

The one thing missing from this conversation is the fact of living with a serious mental illness and how that affects pre-incarceration, incarceration, and post-incarceration. It is important to increase our knowledge of mandating medication for the seriously mentally ill. It's neglectful to not treat and only punish. Anosognosia can greatly affect those suffering. It affects recidivism. One point of support is to meet the person where they are at. That's practically the only effective tool I had for my son after years of hospitalizations, rehabs and stints in jail. Go to them on the streets, like the VOA ACT team does. If we funded these programs it will help. We can't force a person to change. If we don't offer programs of awareness for everyone affected we will just keep building bigger prisons. The Other Side Academy would do well to create a dual diagnosis program. I hope they would get funding to hire the medical team required to treat those who self-medicate their serious mental illness. For now, The First Step House, is about all my son has to keep him from prison. He's trying. He needs mentors and be able to practice his adjusted life. I hope The First Step House would keep their residents longer inpatient like The Other Side Academy. See each person as not being able to play the violin. I like that analogy. Teach them about music first, what a note is, what an octive is, how to create chords, before ever holding the violin. Awareness is the beginning. The music is our kind, our stories. The note is the "I am" message. The octave is clearing the mind for a higher self where he or she holds a safe space for love of self. Chords? Putting together the awareness, re-storied self, the I Am's under an umbrella of positive affirmations supported by others. It takes a village. Play that violin. Thank you teacher.

Undoing our internal stories, unraveling the knots is a paradigm shift within the mind. It starts with awareness, then a word or chapter of self changes. A higher power is the gas to keep ourselves powered. Not necessarily a "god" is needed. One is not empty if they don't believe in a "god". Turn towards self, let the stories be undone, evolve, help others this way by starting to hear their stories without bias. Keep listening. Help heal the hurt. Great conversation.

Exactly, it's a fact that quitting booze not only makes your world a better place to be in, good things start to “magically” happen and the energy is insane! Steffon Barkload's Quit Drinking Forever, that’s the best shortcut I go’ogled that took less than a week to work without suffering withdrawal.

It is such a complicated disease and it takes education on how to proceed for both the addict and the person on the other side of addiction like I am. Thank you Al for your amazing individuals that spread the knowledge and help others. 🫶 thank you and love sent.
