Perhaps Halo CE was Bungie's love letter to the turn of the millennium. Futurism, a mix of hopeful optimism for humanity in the face of grave uncertainty. We see the Y2K era's obsession with high tech machinery present in glossy Covenant space tech and in the chasms of ancient forerunner megastructures. We even see precursors to the Frutiger Aero aesthetic, in those breathtaking outdoor levels. I think part of why Halo CE is such a masterpiece is how well it resonates with the era in which it was released, which is perhaps why it's so memorable to us. A perfect ambassador for the feeling of the early 2000s, the perfect work of art created at the perfect moment in time. Bungie really outdid themselves. You did too with this video.

The atmosphere of Combat Evolved is absolutely unmatched. No game after it managed to capture it quite as well as the first. It's a big part of what keeps bringing me back to it all these years later. (For context, I'm 25, and played Halo for the first time in 2003) I never read the Fall of Reach growing up, but I did end up watching that short animated film that 343 did - so I at least got an understanding of Chief's backstory. It was only very recently that I decided to finally read through the original print of The Fall of Reach. And I just have to say - man that book really gave me a whole different kind of appreciation for CE than I already had. Don't get me wrong, CE has always been my most played Halo - but putting myself in the shoes of someone in 2001 whose first Halo experience was reading that book during the leadup to the launch of the game was just so surreal, and as soon as I finished the book I just *had* to boot up my OG Xbox and play it again for the millionth time, but this time through a slightly clearer lense. Basically brought it up to say that reading the book absolutely enhanced the way the atmosphere hits me and I just love it. But man - what an absolute masterpiece of a game. 🔥

The vibrant yet soft lighting is so beautiful. The glow behind the ring in Truth and Reconciliation or the blues in Forerunner structures. Ik like a moth to the flame for that stuff lol. The lighting in Mass Effect 1 is similar. It really adds to the scifi feel. Gorgeous video, man.
