Not infinity war, because the relatively cheerful first and second act really made people believe there would be a happy ending, and made it an even better plot twist, arguably the best in a blockbuster ending ever, even beating the empire strikes back. In empire strikes back star wars was still a new IP, and fans still didn't know what to expect. But by infinity war there had been so many happy ending marvel movies that nobody was expecting a sad third act twist, especially since there were so many red herrings pointing to a way for them to stop it (vision going to get the stone out, wanda killing vision to save the world, thor killing thanos the instant before the snap, etc.). DC's post apocalypse seems so in character for the franchise that it can hardly be considered surprising. And i think endgame was just grim enough, cap, tony, clint, and natasha were all suitably dark, thor might have been comedic, but he certainly had a tragic air to his character, war machine and rocket werent key enough characters and didnt have enough screen time to show how they were affected outside of a small cutaway here and there. Nebula was always depressed. The only characters i would have liked to see be darker were hulk and maybe antman (antman is more off the hook since he didnt lose his daughter and because he had a stellar introduction scene when he was searching for his daughter's gravestone). I would definitely like to see a new version of Age of Ultron, that was more dark and matched the teaser. It could keep Ultron's humor, but make it more cruel and dark, like the Joker. Make the Avengers more subdued in scenes with a bit too much comedy. Keep scenes like the party intro for ultron the same, the church scene, and the death of pietro the same (pietros death was unexpected and iconic). Thanks for listening to my ted talk.
