Awesome vid! Over 50 here. Love all these bands mentioned and grew up idolizing them. Many of my music heroes are only ~10 yrs older than I am, while others like Iggy Pop are the age of my father. IMO newer acts like Drab Majesty and Night in Athens are no less goth than the seminal 80s bands like Sisters of Mercy or Clan of Xymox before them, both lifelong favorites. I never heard the Goth term until the 90s, and it was never mentioned without the Industrial counterpart in that era. This dual-label encompassed a really wide gamut music. Getting to the point: there's a reason that tag clouds won on social media over heirarchies of categories and sub-categories: they're too strict. You can't ever nail down the corner cases. But tags? Tags communicate succinctly. So we should treat genres like tags - not categories. The acts that stick to their own vision end up redefining genres because it's the art that attracts fans and endures in our hearts, not the label. cheers and subbed.

@@someguy9440 I love this perspective! Tags are great for digital libraries but I need a system for my vinyl records. 😆 This is where I start sub-categorizing as the collection grows. There is definitely lots of overlap and grey areas in the genres.

Really liked the background story of where the poser therm came from, super interesting ! With the rise of popularity of Goth subculture thanks to Tik Tok entering the community in 2024 is quite challenging even tho I have quite a good knowledge of the music. As myself a 28 year old baby bat music maniac that thrives more towards newer bands but still appreciate OG groups that I use to listen to as a kid, feels like the gatekeeping nowadays is super hardcore online. Kind of afraid to out in the world because of it 😂

You said Siouxsie and the Banshees were a post punk band, need to do some more research, they played their debut gig at the punk festival at the 100 club in September 1976 when punk was in full swing

I jumped in thinking this was about actual music theory.. :) BUT was pleasantly surprised and actually learnt a thing or two about genres. To us music geeks, the "theory" moniker has certain connotations.

You need to check out Amon Düül II, the German experimental band. On their 1972 album ‘Wolf City’ is a track called ‘Deutsch Nepal’. Make sure you listen to the record version and not their live version. I dare anyone to tell me that that is not proto-proto-Goth. PS: their whole creative output is just stunning, even though their little venture into Goth was not often repeated.

Dark wave does exactly what it says originally a synth pop side show most famous by Clan of Xymox, the damned ( later work ) sisters of mercy however nowadays, it tends heavily upon the original EBM ( electronic body music ) so more synth pop than the rock originally and sometimes Depeche mode and some other bands like Talk talk are coming eerily close

I know I’m very late but I am just now getting into the goth subculture and music explanations like this one and I feel very lost because maybe some things you explained are a bit complicated and /or detailed.I was wondering what would you suggest to do to start understanding the differences between genres and bands?Like I can’t really tell the difference between new wave, cold wave, dark, wave, synth wave and especially i can’t really explain them and describe them and i want to learn how to☹️🙏🏻

There's a Gothic Rock and Metal band. I don't remember the name of the band. Very good! I've been searching for this band to this day, and I can't find it since 2009. I remember the clip: in a big house and there are a lot of black Manique, and they are dancers dressed as black mannequins. The CD cover is blue and has a rose, and the vocalist sings a lot, I still look for this band to this day. If anyone can help. Thank you... All CDs have Rose on the cover.

Very good used to go and watch The Stun and Rosetta forgot all about some of these old 90's bands you missed out a few key ones but must of been hard to narrow it down to 10!! Looking back on it were actually pretty spoilt for good Goth bands back in the 90's!!! Here in the UK.

I liked video but it never got to any music theory (except that the songs are in a minor key). I was kinda hoping you'd get into some elements of the songs musically (not just genre categories etc). Love Drab Majesty btw.

i love the way goth looks, but i honestly think almost all goth music sucks. i don't like any of the '"classic" goth albums or artists... maybe, like The Cure is cool? lol the look is amazing but the music... is just kinda beige/olive coloured... and _hella_ depressing.

All picks were right on! From 1980 to 85 I dj'ed at punk teenage clubs in Arizona. When the supposed punk kids were trying to be hard core the only music available was the cure, new order, the smiths and the trendy bands as such. I had been listening to CoX, red lorry, Xmal , march violets and virgin prunes since their conception and when I started playing them at the club it was an awakening! Other bands were Divynals and the yachts. Great music from great bands!!!

Everyone is unique its just that over the years Goth has become a general term for a Dark persona and less so the original goth-rock scene. I believe its a great honor to have Goth define broader spectrum of darkness unlike say Emo which is very specific. Goth is a feeling and an attitude, ideas and philosophies, the dark side of life. Not just goth-rock. Many people are there for music and friends, their darkness is often so superficial. "I know the history of goth, can name you all the essential bands, like spiders and coffins". Completely missing the mark of being dark in your mindset. Such people view goth as boxes to check and are not creative or alternative for that matter, in a real sense.
