There's a Gothic Rock and Metal band. I don't remember the name of the band. Very good! I've been searching for this band to this day, and I can't find it since 2009. I remember the clip: in a big house and there are a lot of black Manique, and they are dancers dressed as black mannequins. The CD cover is blue and has a rose, and the vocalist sings a lot, I still look for this band to this day. If anyone can help. Thank you... All CDs have Rose on the cover.

Very good used to go and watch The Stun and Rosetta forgot all about some of these old 90's bands you missed out a few key ones but must of been hard to narrow it down to 10!! Looking back on it were actually pretty spoilt for good Goth bands back in the 90's!!! Here in the UK.

I liked video but it never got to any music theory (except that the songs are in a minor key). I was kinda hoping you'd get into some elements of the songs musically (not just genre categories etc). Love Drab Majesty btw.

i love the way goth looks, but i honestly think almost all goth music sucks. i don't like any of the '"classic" goth albums or artists... maybe, like The Cure is cool? lol the look is amazing but the music... is just kinda beige/olive coloured... and _hella_ depressing.

Investigate further The Sisters of Mercy. Their most goth albums are the ep's The Reptile House and The Temple of Love. Enjoy. Siouxie and the Banshees best for me is the album Thorn.

If you are only considering bands that formed and released an album in the 80's, you need to include Death in June -The Guilty have no Pride. Medusa is a Goth masterpiece.

All picks were right on! From 1980 to 85 I dj'ed at punk teenage clubs in Arizona. When the supposed punk kids were trying to be hard core the only music available was the cure, new order, the smiths and the trendy bands as such. I had been listening to CoX, red lorry, Xmal , march violets and virgin prunes since their conception and when I started playing them at the club it was an awakening! Other bands were Divynals and the yachts. Great music from great bands!!!

Everyone is unique its just that over the years Goth has become a general term for a Dark persona and less so the original goth-rock scene. I believe its a great honor to have Goth define broader spectrum of darkness unlike say Emo which is very specific. Goth is a feeling and an attitude, ideas and philosophies, the dark side of life. Not just goth-rock. Many people are there for music and friends, their darkness is often so superficial. "I know the history of goth, can name you all the essential bands, like spiders and coffins". Completely missing the mark of being dark in your mindset. Such people view goth as boxes to check and are not creative or alternative for that matter, in a real sense.

Another direct link between Punk and Goth is The Cure who were basically a Punk band in their "Killing An Arab" era. Also, The Stooges are from the 1960s and much more of a Proto-Punk band, along with the MC5 and Jonathan Richman.

Dark wave is also characterized by goth crossing over with 90s alternative movements such as shoegaze or with other post punk variants like coldwave or no wave.

First, i loved this vid! Very informative and a great example of how to build a good scene with good intentions. Thank you all! Has there been a revisiting of this podcast? So much has changed with the attitude and approach with building a scene. In San Diego, the more prominent events are riddled with sex/drug trafficking, predatory/exploiting, cliques/favoritism, and a lack of amazing bands. There are also a lot of sabotaging and hypocrisy with putting out an image vs being about good music. If you ever revisit this subject, id love to join. I have a lot of testimonies from people who no longer participate in the scene and former employees of corrupt event promoters.

There was a record album that came out in 1968 that sounded very different from the music that was out at the time. It had a dark ominous organ with heavy guitars and a vocalist with a spooky baritone. The album was a psychedelic rock piece by the band IRON BUTTERFLY and was titled HEAVY. The album art was blue and yellow featuring a butterfly made out of iron, a giant ear made out of stone on a lunar landscape with a starry night sky. The band was pictured performing on this planet around the giant ear. The songs were very commanding and heavy as molasses with titles like, "Possession", "Unconscious Power" & "fields of the Sun" I'm suggesting that this may be one of the first, if not the first, Gothic rock albums. Have you ever heard it? If not, look it up and listen to the songs I mentioned and tell me what you think.

This helps me explain to younger club goers why we didn’t have “genres” in the 80s other than New wave and Industrial and these terms we’re developing as new music was being released back then. I DJ underground 80s music and when I advertise I have ensure I’m labeling my gigs to the terms the younger gen understands. You made a super accurate comments here regarding Clan of Xymox. When their debut record was released in 1985, we didn’t even think what to call it; other than New Wave or a New Music Alternative. Even bands like Ministry were labeled “experimental” before the term industrial was realized. I expected to just swipe through this but it’s educated me and helps me connect the dots for my younger patrons. Thanks!
