Unfortunately I don’t have many or cheaper in state schools and now I’m starting dpt school in 5 months and I’m considering dropping it because of the debt, I feel like I’ll enjoy pt but an accelerated bsn program 20 min from me is only 10k and a nurse practitioner seems like a better financial decision, not in it for the money but I also don’t want to dig myself into a 20 year repayment plan

I'm starting to think becoming a PT at this stage of the game would be financial suicide even tho I would find the intangibles of the job so much more rewarding than what I do now..

This was a great video. As a parent of a kid that wants to attend Physical Therapy school this is definately an eye opener. I couldn't find the link for the spreadsheet though. Do you think it would be worth it if my son attended a $65K a year school Undergrad (3 year accelerated program) which I have saved for and would pay. Then my son would pay his own way in the DPT program at roughly $40k a year. I am starting to think he may be financially in over his head with the particular school he is considering. Thoughts? And once again great video!

But, since Im only 17 I would be done with PTA by 19 if all goes well, and im not sure people will hire me honestly! will PTA programs look at my bachelor’s as overqualified or a stand out applicant? thank you!

when you look at total cost of tuition reported by the schools, interest is never accounted for. Interest rates are high for graduate school loans and it starts accruing immediately. I think my interest was an extra $15,000 by the time I actually graduated. Also, looking at average salary for PT is not really the best value to look at for a new grad. New grad salaries are sadly typically a lot lower than the average. New grads have the highest debt and usually lowest salary. Personally I am working on paying off $113k student loans, I am down to $28k after 2 years now. Good breakdown at the end of the video on if its worth it or not. I agree with your points!
@DrNickDPT
@DrNickDPT 3 жыл бұрын
I agree on interest. But there's such a wide variability (0% currently) hard to account for. I also agree fundamentally on new grad salary, but I'd also say that there are options (travel, home health) that afford much more opportunity. I'll be making a follow up based on comments, so I appreciate your opinion.

The reason people would feel more comfortable in a squat with a raised heel would be lack of ankle mobility and flexibility. The fix isn't heeled shoes it would be to work on your flexibility and mobility. Barefoot shoes all the way! I wear xeros and vivo and love them. Feel way more stable and better Ballance in the squat and deadlift and other movements.

@@DrNickDPTwell okay, I'd say it's at least one of the reasons then. However, You just saying no as a blanket statement with no counter argument or evidence isn't useful or accurate.
@DrNickDPT
@DrNickDPT 3 жыл бұрын
@@65impact my statement was accurate as it was refuting your absolute statement that all you need to do is work on your mobility. If someone wants to squat in heeled shoes, the question you start with is why. It's advantageous for certain sports (oly, powerlifting, ect) If that's the goal (competition), it would be foolish to not use heeled shoes if it allowed for a better individual performance. If it's not for competition, and the individual just wants to work out, it doesn't matter. If the individual WANTS to squat barefoot, sure. But the reality is, to get better at squatting barefoot, they need to squat barefoot more frequently. No need to start with "flexibility" nor "mobility" drills first. Add them in as supplemental work, if you so want, sure.
@65impact
@65impact 3 жыл бұрын
@@DrNickDPT @Dr. Nick DPT Bro do you even understand the function of powerlifting/Squat shoes? The whole reason they are advantageous for oly lifting is the raised heal increases ankle dorsiflexion effortlessly and thus allows you to get into a better position in the squat and achieve depth much easier. If you have poor mobility and try to barefoot squat working on it will obviously help you. I also never said focus on mobility first before before you practice barefoot squatting. Obviously to barefoot squat better you have to do it more as with anything. I meant increasing your mobility will help you in squatting barefoot so obviously it's supplemental. You either misunderstood my previous comment or you are creating straw man arguments to debunk me and appear smarter. You seem like a nice intelligent man so I will assume it's the former.

Hey Dr. Nick, I actually currently attend FIU DPT program and I am a Rising Third Year. I did everything right, Undergrad paid for and going to an in state public school near. but the cost of attendance of FIU DPT is 76,500, not $40 K. I think DPT is still going to be worth it for me because I am also a CSCS and Personal Trainer and plan to practice as PT, Strength Coach and Trainer. My income as a PT may be capped at 80k in a traditional clinic, but I plan to pick up periderm / weekend shifts in the hospital I am also planning on still working as a Trainer and occasionally as a Coach, With a background in Physical Therapy More High Profile, High Income, Clients are willing to pay $$$ for training sessions and are willing to spread the word for the profession. I Really See myself Working 55 hours a week in Health and Human Performance, Primarily as a Physical Therapist, but also as a Part time Trainer There will be debt but honestly many other health care professionals are dealing with similar factors, Higher Cost of Education and Lower Reimbursement That being said, Advocacy, has been a big thing in school and understanding that marketing and exposure is something that has been drilled in my generation. Slowly but surely I've seen the younger generation of MDs understand and respect PT and are more willing to refer to PT, I have also just seen more exposure of PTs in Social Media and more occurrences of patients paying out of pocket for evaluations because they have had great experiences with PT or have been highly recommended by family and friends. Yes we have issues, but all professions do Only come into this field if you love Physical Therapy and Human Motion But also understand that you have to give it your all and spread your voice to help make our financial situation and presence as a profession better! The Grass is Always Greener on the Other Side!

The topics in this video are exactly what I’m looking for and the kind of things I need to learn about. I’m looking into getting back into school seriously and I’m also really interested in physical therapy. I haven’t made the ultimate decision on whether to pursue it as a career but I probably will in the near future. I’ve been getting some advice from older folks and some of them say it isn’t a great idea to go into physical therapy as they don’t think there’s going to be enough work in the future here in Los Angeles. My physician told me it’ll be tough but didn’t totally discourage me. She was nice enough to invite me to her own physical therapy session for her back and hip this coming Monday as she was unfortunately in a recent car accident. So I’m very excited for that but also nervous as I don’t know what to expect and I’m not super well versed on physical therapy or anatomy yet. Hopefully I’ll get an idea of what it’s like and the experience will be able to help me decide whether I’d like it or not. This channel and your content is great. You’re very well spoken and clear about everything you talk about. I’m definitely subscribed and looking forward to your future videos.
