There's an adjustment at the rear ot the deck, DOC, which looks like it could use a slight tweak, as is often the case on this model. The service manual says you can use a special dropout test tape, or alternatively just twiddle it so the dropouts go away. Good old Sanyo, just get to the point. Yes these machines are mechanically noisy and fairly basic, but I absolutely love a VTC5150. Better than the VTC5000 both cosmetically and functionally. Does a Sony give a better picture? Well yes, for most tapes they usually do, but a Sanyo can sometimes play a bad tape where any Sony will just mute the picture.

@@MrBetaByte Single event timer (or everyday, which it could do) were a result of the clicky tuner buttons. Later models like the VTC-M40 had a better tuner and true multi-event timer including a record-from-now timer function which I used a lot.

Reminds me of Christmas presents. It still looked good when wrapped up. The fact that SONY can't offer free downloads of service manuals says a lot about the company. I can now comment with white letters again. With 32 bit Firefox, this was mostly possible in the last few weeks with black letters on a black background (Firefox Darkmode). For people born in 1969, this wss not optimal.

I have one of these, but there's no motor drive in FF/REW. Some kind of electronic failure but I don't have a schematic to get to the bottom of it. Play works though. I know they're fairly useless machines today, but still a bit of fun.

The capstan shaft needs to be dead flat otherwise, in Review mode, the tape will ride and you can here it crinkle along the top or bottom edge NOT GOOD. You can feel with your finger or thumb if it has a slight indent through wear. The pinch roller too needs to be dead flat and matt, not shiny with oxide (as i'm sure this one is not). Also when you put the black plastic piece back on the pinch roller shaft. The shaft should be flush with the top of that cap.You can feel that with your finger. Then make sure it all spins freely.

Your videos helped me a lot! I am repairing my V8000 right now. Had same dent on the head like You have on that new second hand one that you receive for parts. Where did you get the parts from ? I can find them anywhere...

Really glad the videos have helped. Yes, the 'dent' is a design used for a while on Panasonic machines. It's just looking for scrap decks for parts unfortunately. You might be lucky and find new old stock parts for sale but I've not really found anything for them as yet.

I bought an NV F77 EC a little less then a year ago, was working when I got it but developed small issues with the picture after a while. I Recapped the power supply a few months ago and after that it's working like new. It's built in 1992 and produces the best picture quality of all my small collection of VHS machines.

I think my F77 is going to need the same power supply re-cap and then hopefully it should be good to go. Really looking forward to seeing how well it performs, especially with what you've said with the picture quality.

Hey hey 👋🏻 So, I remember the NV-F70 was 1989 - which was the first of that series of machines. This model would have been no more than a year or two later, I'm pretty sure. When I worked at Technicolor Videocassette (where I grabbed a handful of those TM-2 timers, remember?!) I also had a Saturday job in a very cool HiFi/tv/video shop called Wires. There were about 20 branches, mostly over the south of England. That's how I know it's 1989 for the F70 😄 On Saturday mornings we'd whack up the volume on The Chart Show, demo-ing the "latest" Nicam Stereo VCRs 😄 Vividly remember Madonna "Like a Prayer" being played. Great days...didn't need the Saturday job for money, just loved doing it! Brilliant shop, and a brilliant time for the HiFi and video industry, when people still cared about quality. All went a bit downhill after that time, in many ways. Greetings from NY, I'll be back in England soon, might be looking to sell a few bits, I think I mentioned a SLO-1700. Anyway, back to the grindstone for a few more days....

Be aware that this won't play HDV tapes recorded in either the Sony 1080P nor JVC 720P progressive modes (well the latter it might display but not provide a digital output). I have the less fancy HVR-M15E and the progressive HVR-M15AE models here, without displays.

Really enjoyed this. I’ve had one from new. I worked for a Technics Panasonic Dealer when it came out. They were so rare, they wouldnt give a penny discount! It was £1999.99!! But it really was / is an awesome piece of kit. Yes, I was shouting “go to AU, arrow down man. Arrow down” :-) You have sussed it. You can lay Hi Fi Audio then overlay Video. Not the other way. Mine has dark picture too, so now I know what it is👍 I’m so sad, I’ve still got the box, leads, instructions, the Bar Code Pen & Sheet - remember them! Cheers Andy - AVAV Systems

Amazing, I see 1980s Beta and VHS machines while thrifting but shudder at the thought of getting them to work, as well as the absence of parts. That said I do pick up units that please my sense of design, like the deck whose front panel controls actually come off as a remote control. Love it, but the the batteries died in there.

I've been trying to follow along with this playlist as I've recently had one of these drop into my lap - for what it's worth, do you think you could gather specifications (dimensions, values, polarity, etc.) for both the stock caps, and recommended replacments, and publish a guide somewhere on caps(dot)wiki, please? While I do absolutely appreciate the effort you go to making these videos in the first place, when you've got a Mouser order open on one hand, and are juggling a KZbin video on the other, things can get a little bit... Well, you know what I mean. 😅 Oh, one more thing: said new to me deck displays a picture with heavy noise bars - but it clears up when forward/reverse picture searching. That makes me think a head clog, but paper soaked in IPA comes up clean. I will try cleaning the entire tape transport and muster up the courage to refurbish the head drum, but while you're here... Would you have any other suggestions as to what I could try next? (Cap or otherwise?) Thank you! :D
