I have to comment fhaf what you guys are doing here is great and unique. Your taking high level pieces and actually analyzing from both an artistic and technical point of view. No other podcast does this (even COP) and you two do it so well. This is exactly the kind of content that's missing in the space right now so I hope you lean into it more.

I finally get it.. I thought the bounce light was somehow skipping from the initial highlight, which sound bananas and why it never clicked.. but it's the reflection of things around the character.. so a dark stripe could be a tree or a fence post and larger, lighter highlights are a white wall or something brighter

the thing with stippling is, the concept is well known and really obvious in practice, but nobody ever goes into any detail about how thinned the paint needs to be, how much water to use, how wet the brush is when applying the paint....it always seems to be this bit that trips me up, largely because when you're painting at such a small scale in such minute quantities the moisture element is quite difficult to control. Ive also tried stippling using a dry brush and its the same problem. Any ideas chaps?
@GitGudPaintingАй бұрын
This is a great question and a great point. My personal preference is to have the paint at slightly thinner than layer consistency, so with my AKs, that's about 50/50 paint to water. My brush is voided to remove all excess, just like I'd do when glazing. I prefer to build up the marks with more subtlety, taking my time while still being able to see new lines/ marks appear. Let me know if this helps at all!
@Nosh_FeratuАй бұрын
@GitGudPainting awesome, I really appreciate your response, I'll definitely be trying that tomorrow!! Occasionally you can experiment and stumble upon something that really works, but you have to have that foundation and solid principles to build on or at least fall back on...advice from an expert is super helpful!!!

Hey guys! I figured out, right a few days ago, the importance of time constraint challenges and, at the same time, you air an episode where you talk about that very topic! I think this might be a sign from the painting gods... although, if that's the case, they are speaking to me in a more subtle way than they do with Magnus 😂

Hi guys! Typically I am not leaving any comments on YT. But this time I want to thank you for the first part of this video. At the moment I have 2 y old and newborn at home and it's sometimes tough. Not talking about painting because there's not any, but life itself. We sometimes forget that everyone has some worse moments/ days. Thanks and lots of health for you and your families! Ps: I'm really enjoying your content, good work :)
@magnusnielsen7599Ай бұрын
Man, life just happens. It can be really tough wanting to paint/hobby but simply bot having the time or energy. But family always comes first. Grats on the newborn, hope you guys are all happy and healthy

Exactly what magnus has put, life comes first and that's how it is sometimes. Congratulations on the baby! Enjoy the time because it'll be gone before you know but don't feel bad about missing painting. ❤️

Good explaination. It'realy clear (so reduce the time or increse the exposure.?)
@GitGudPaintingАй бұрын
When we remove ISO from the equation, we're balancing shutter speed with our aperture. As the aperture opens up (going lower on the f-stop) we need to increase our shutter speed, and vice versa.

@NikkiAnnMarieАй бұрын
Fantastic video, explained very clearly :) Very few go over what each variable actually does and just give vague recommendations, so to get that much info crammed into about 10 minutes and digestible is really well done I think it might be worth some further discussion on backdrops and how to set them up - mainly focusing on getting pure white/black (or close to it) without overexposing the mini/backdrop respectively, and potentially something on focus stacking as well, but those are more advanced topics so I totally understand skipping them
@GitGudPaintingАй бұрын
Absolutely! There was so much to cover that I wanted to keep it tight, but I'll certainly be covering this in a future video. I've had some good links to free focus stacking tools so I'll probably demo one of those as I don't want people to have to learn Adobe stuff if possible.
@treydog999Ай бұрын
i would love to see a follow on of this of how to record yourself painting minis.
@GitGudPaintingАй бұрын
Good idea! I can definitely whip something together on this!
@TheRonHockmanАй бұрын
Excellent. White balance is probably the only thing you're missing.
@GitGudPaintingАй бұрын
Yeah, I kept it off on the assumption that most people would be using AWB, but it'll definitely be included in the follow-up!
@TheRonHockmanАй бұрын
@@GitGudPainting Both white balance on the camera, but also using similar color temperatures in your lights. One lamp at 6500k and others at 2500K would give results a beginner might not expect. But you did a very good job distilling what is a very complex series of topics down to something digestible that both shows what you should do, along with an explanation of why.

Not got a DSLR and I don't really think I will buy one for just taking pics of minis seeing as I do not have a following at all so it just makes no real sense to get one. That said this info was very valuable overall and can be applied to phones as well.

This is everything I've learned over the years, and in exactly the way I could dream to explain it and show it whenever I get asked and if I had proper time to write it down or even film it. I'll recommend this video literally every time I get asked about miniature photography and share it whenever I can! Thank you so much for your effort and attention to detail with this complex topic! (personally I've found a light source angling *up* from below the mini helps as well, especially when the top down one is powerful)
