@ThereOughtaBe7 күн бұрын
The production files are linked in the blog post in the video description ("more details"). It was made in Belnder with the Blender CAM Plugin. If you are specifically asking for an STL (or 3MF) I am not really sure what you are hoping to get. CNC machines are not like 3D printers where you just dump an STL into a slicer and press "go". You should find the 3D model I created as a basis in the blend files and can easily export it to STL from Blender, but you will still have to set up toolpaths around it, find a strategy to flip the models (unless you have a more fancy CNC router than I have) and (depending on the CAM you use) figure out the more specific paths like for example chamfering or the vcarving of the logo. You should definitely have a look at the blog post where I go through all the individual paths to get an idea of how you could adapt it to your machine and your available tools.

Brilliant tool! Thanks for creating it. I want to try using a train ticket QR code on my Gameboy as you suggested! Would I be able to upload frames of an animation and have it loop through?
@ThereOughtaBe26 күн бұрын
For the QR code: Because of the low resolution of the Game Boy, you should prepare it in a graphics tool as a 160x144 image such that each pixel of the QR code exactly matches 2x2 pixels of the Game Boy. Otherwise I would be worried that the QR code pixels stretch out unevenly across the Game Boy pixels and may no longer be recognized in their original grid. (Not that I have really tested that.) About the animation: If you upload the frames individually, yes. The tool can handle up to 254 images. One annoyance might be that the duration is set in seconds with a minimum of one. If you want a smoother animation you might want to check out the Game Boy Video Player github.com/LIJI32/GBVideoPlayer2.

We have used lsdpack-kit to create something similar but more music album oriented. If it possible to make the same slideshow player with gbs file support it would be fantastic.
@ThereOughtaBe26 күн бұрын
I have to admit that I neglected sound quite a bit in my Game Boy projects so far and I only just looked up the GBS format. Do you have an idea how much of the Game Boy music uses timing based on vblank and how much requires higher rate timers? The thing is that I can easily see adding support for calling gbs-based music from vblank, but the hicolor images require extremely precise timing on each hblank, so interrupts are pretty much out of question here.

The ROM file always opens as a GBC game with the GBC image never with the DMG image... Any ideas?
@ThereOughtaBe27 күн бұрын
>Where< does it always open as GBC? On a GBC or a GBA that is the point. On an emulator, an Analogue Pocket and probably most similar devices, there usually is a setting to enforce emulating an DMG instead of an GBC. Otherwise emulators usually recognize the correct format themselves, which would be GBC.

@ThereOughtaBe27 күн бұрын
The idea was to make a tool that is as simple as possible. For anything more complicated than a simple slideshow, I would recommend GB Studio. If you are asking about the Game Boy coding aspects: The Game Boy's scroll registers make this not too difficult as you can really just move the scroll position - mostly. The problem is that there is not enough room to move it entirely offscreen, so you need some additional logic to gradually update the tilemap with empty parts (again, not too difficult as this can be done lazily during vblank). Also, the mid-frame changes done by my tool need to be adjusted: The tileset switching needs to move with the scrolling and the palette updates for the color images too.

Well, my idea was to make a simple tool for one particular task. I have never looked into GBA programming as this is actually quite different. Might look into GBA at some point, but not sure if I will remake this tool then. Videos is a whole different beast and will definitely not be added to this tool. @ThereOughtaBe28 күн бұрын
Yes, the grayscale version is compatible. However, since this ROM is hybrid, it will automatically run in Game Boy Color mode if you put it in a GBC or GBA and the Interceptor cannot handle that. So, it's yes as long as you put it into a grayscale model or a device where you can select what to emulate.

Questions: Is there a limit to the number of photos? Is there a way to create a rom, them drag in more and append them to the original rom via a patch or something later on? Might be cool addition if not. Is there a way to select and play any looping audio should we want? Might be cool to add if not. Would this work on everdrive GB / GBA series? (I would assume yes) Awesome stuff I cant wait to test this out after work! Thank you!
@ThereOughtaBe28 күн бұрын
1.) At the moment it is 254 images. Mostly because at the moment the grayscale and the color image together take up almost an entire memory bank and the image index uses a single byte to reference memory banks. So bank 255 is the maximum minus bank 0 which holds the code and image index. If someone really has the need for it, I could add a 16bit ROM index for MBC5 carts or create an grayscale only option. 2.) Hm... I see why you would want that, but that is more than I would like to implement. On one hand, the old images would be "locked" in the sense that the original is not available, so they cannot be adjusted anymore and the only benefit over keeping a folder with your ROM images on your PC is that you could keep adjustments to the brightness/contrast sliders. If these are so important, I would recomment preparing the images in a graphics tool anyways. So, I would simply put in the default answer: Use GB Studio for more complex ROMs :) 3.) GB Studio :) Although... I haven't looked into audio much, but am aware that there is a huge community around Game Boy music and synthesizers. Is there a wide-spread format for Game Boy music? I would not implement a sequencer for this simple tool, but if there is a Game Boy-centric format, it might make sense. 4.) The ROMs are DMG/GBC ROMs and will not work on a regular GBA cartridge. Those are electrically and logically different. The GBA actually has a full GBC unit inside to run GBC games from actual GCB cartridges. But I guess I wrote that generic GBA answer for others who might read this and might misunderstand the question. I suppose you are asking about that Everdrive that is basically a GBA cartridge but that can emulate GBC games. I do not have an Everdrive, so I cannot test it, but I don't see why it shouldn't work. The ROM code does not do anything unusual and from Everdrive's reputation I would expect that an integrated emulator can handle the timing of the palette changes for the color images. So if an Everdrive can run GBC games (not only GBA games) then it should work.

Video is over 4 minutes long, fake news (Also interested in the moire pattern video with code dive pls)
@ThereOughtaBe28 күн бұрын
Nah, the idea is that YOU can create a slideshow ROM in under a minute. Not that I can contain myself to ramble on about it for several minutes :) I meant a video about how to generate the color images. The "More Moiree" reference was about an extreme Moiree pattern that was visible in that scene because of the pixel grid of the Game Boy when watching the video at any resolution but 4k. Interestingly, the effect is barely visible in the video on KZbin at any resolution. I am wondering if KZbin has particularly good postprocessing to get rid of such problems or if it is just the stronger compression removing the details of the grid.
@mobcont833527 күн бұрын
@ThereOughtaBe i think the best way to compare the effect would be displaying it on hardware vs emulator. Older screens with low resolution could disguise these patterns somewhat.
@chmis328 күн бұрын
QR code example is ultimate dork, would love to do that. Would it also be feasible to scan a QR code using GB camera, or is it just too low of a resolution?
@ThereOughtaBe28 күн бұрын
I haven't tried it much, but even just showing a QR code that you already have in digital form can be tricky because of the low resolution. You should definitely scale it in a graphics tool first such that the QR pixels line up with the pixels of the 160x144 image for the Game Boy as a multiple of them. I think scanning QR codes with the Game Boy camera could become tricky for the same reason...

Should this work with Windows 10? I'm having a real hard time making the device come up as anything other than USB storage when I plug it in
@ThereOughtaBeАй бұрын
If it shows up as USB storage even if you do not press the flash button, it has not yet been flashed with any firmware. This should be normal if you ordered a new PCB like in the video. If you bought an assembled Interceptor somewhere I would have expected them to flash it, but you should be able to just flash it with a uf2 file as shown in the video.
@kmichael9787Ай бұрын
@ThereOughtaBe it says that it contains two files 'INDEX' and 'INFO_UF2' when it gets detected as a regular USB, but the first file just opens a link to rasberrypi's website, and the secons opens as a notepad with the message 'UF2 Bootloader v3.0 Model: Raspberry pi RP2 Board-ID: RPI-RP2' is that what it would be expected to contain, or should i wipe it and try to set it up from scratch?? (P.s really appreciate the help, your creation is cool as hell, and was gifted to me by my brother!)
@ThereOughtaBeАй бұрын
Yes, these two files are normal and they will always be there. The Interceptor is based on an rp2040, which is the microcontroller behind the Raspberry Pi Pico. These pretend to be mass storage device in flash mode, so new firmware can just be dragged onto the device without the need for any special flashing software. It shows these files to point new Pi Pico users to instructions on how to do it, but these are no real files. If you delete them, they will just show up again next time and any file you drag into the folder will be gone the next time. Only if you drag a valid firmware into the folder, it will be used for flashing (and still not show up as a file the next time). Long story short, simply follow the instructions from 12:34 in the video: Download the latest uf2 file from github (github.com/Staacks/gbinterceptor/releases/latest) and drag it into the folder. It should then start acting like a webcam instead of a mass storage device. (Only difference to the video is that it is now firmware version 1.2.0, but absolutely make sure you use 1.2.0 and not 1.0.0 as shown in the video as there have been a lot of improvements.)
