A truer more accurate test would have been a full tank to clean out the injectors. The gas pumps are not that precise and the stoping mechanisms could vary. Nice effort, but I hope you can post the information from your next full fillup.

Milage may be lower due to the cleaner itself in the combustion process. The true test would be to run the tank to near empty and refill with gas and recheck the milage with just gas after the cleaner has hopefully done its job.

I wasn't clear about that. I had put the cleaner in, run the truck to near empty, filled up and then drove around a few days before starting the test trip with a newly topped off tank. I felt pretty confident the small amount of cleaner left, if any, would be well diluted. Your comment was a good one based upon the info in the video. It was my error for not being clear about the process.

I think that the differences in your mpg test is probably within the realm of statistical error. IOW, all the various things that account for your mileage measurement has some little differences between the first and second tests. Doing a single comparison between the additive and no additive in real world conditions is not enough times to account for variation in conditions.

I was just thinking about this yesterday and agree with you. I wish I had the time and money to have run the first MPG test multiple times to prove it was repeatable.

I only have this to say.... Berryman's B-12 Chemtool seems to be the best bang for the buck in fuel system cleaners at $4-$5 a can. It shows the best results in multiple testing from multiple testers in multiple vehicles over long periods of time. Unlike most gas additives, B-12 burns when ignited with a flame. Most gas additives don't burn when ignited, so at the absolute very least, if Berryman's doesn't clean your engine well, it is at least working to run your engine. Also, gasoline itself is an excellent cleaner, so using a cleaner to give you better gas mileage (regardless what the bottle says) is not what it is for. It is to help clean carbon build up which MAY also improve mpg. It's for helping to clean the piston tops, upper cylinder, intake valves (possibly exhaust valves to a much lesser degree), injectors and maybe even the fuel pump where the gasoline's formulated additive package alone isn't capable of being any more effective. In fact, using cheap gas with Berryman's makes a lot of sense b/c Berryman's is a better cleaner than most name brand gasoline's additive package. If you can get Berryman's at a low enough price, you'll probably be ahead or break even money-wise over using Shell with Nitrogen (which is questionable if Shell 87 oct even has the same nitrogen package that their 91 oct has- they tell you nothing!). At least you know Berryman's is in your tank cause you put it there! This is just my opinion and I know and respect other opinions, except sponsored ones.

I had a 2012 kia rio that i bought brand new. When it was new I would get 30-35 mpg without trying. So over time my mpg gradually dropped over the 10 years that I've owned it and around 100k miles I was getting 27-28 mpg. Never ran fuel cleaner through it. I ran 1 bottle, $27, of BG 44K Platinum through it. The next tank on the same exact commute, I got 37 mpg. So when I watched this video and heard 'my car runs with no issues' I was not surprised at the results. My car was way down on mpg so I probably had clogged fuel injectors. If you don't have clogged fuel injectors, nothing is going to change. I now run a bottle once a year for maintenance.

Thank you so much sir for making this video. That rattling noise is the VVT gears. Evidently if it gets carbon build up on there it causes one of the pieces to fall or not fall back into place (it could also be a guide going bad.) If you send the oil to Blackstone it might show excessive metal if it's really bad. I think once it starts rattling there is no way to fix it w/o replacing the VVT gears.

Is it possible that your car's fuel injectors were already clean and did not need the CRF 505 treatment? That plus that there is no way that you can accurately gauge the gallons used with any real precision, so it looks to me like there was virtually no change in the MPG which brings me back to my original question. If the car did not need cleaning then I would not expect a change in MPG.
@IsItTrueThat
@IsItTrueThat 7 ай бұрын
I agree with your main point, the truck's injectors were working fine and cleaning a perfectly fine working fuel system, is not going to improve gas mileage. I am not so certain that one cannot accurately measure gas used. The bigger issue I believe is that the miles traveled were so small that even a tiny difference in fuel measured translates to a large MPG change. As a side note, the truck gets the same gas mileage it always did. There was no long lasting "drop" in mileage. Thanks for watching and commenting.

watched this same product used on an engine that was running bad and it worked great. Milage wasn't even mentioned, maybe its better at cleaning out your injectors than milage. If your milage check was only I mile per gallon I don't think you can blame this product. Especially if the engine was running good, to many other factors involved.

You are experiencing the effects of oil starvation to bank 1 - caused by a bad oil pump design: oil gets pushed out of the pump mating surface bypassing the normal oil circuit. Check your oil pressure. Replace the cam phasers and the oil pump with a cast iron one.

In my three tests of ATS products none of the tests made a positive detectable difference for me BUT my tests were for specific situations. The oil treatment which is supposed to clean carbon deposits really seemed to deliver a good cleaning. My longer video on the subject shows how dirty the clean oil became after 15 minutes of cleaning. My method of testing the fuel treatment did not let me see the physical results. I do not know how well other brands work so can't give an opinion. Also, other commenters on this page say it is difficult to actually get delivery of the ATS product (at least six months ago it seemed to be). So, to answer your question, I don't know but if I had an issue that I really wanted to address by using a good fuel system cleaner, I'd go with the ATS.

You didn't record the ambient temperature. That can make a difference. I've been a drag race and noticed the cats get faster as the ambient temperature drops. I've also had to clean my spark plugs after doing a fuel injector & throttle body cleaning service. The stuff that comes off the valves ends up on the spark plugs. So either clean them and reuse them or change them.
@IsItTrueThat
@IsItTrueThat Жыл бұрын
Interesting comment about the residue getting on plugs. I'd have to test it to believe it but if true, it could be a factor. My recollection was that the first drive was 15 degrees hotter than the second drive but I may be wrong. All in all, I think the test was reasonably fair and proved that in my case, on a car with no drivability issues, using the cleaner did not improve gas mileage.

You can't expect the fuel nozzle to click off at the same fill level every time. I bet you can get a couple quarts differrance just with nozzle clicks. A real test would be on a dyno with a certain measured amount of fuel. Or maybe a scan tool can tell you actual consumption based off fuel pump flow idk if that's possible or not. Scott Kilmer figures that if your fuel trim was high before you used the cleaner and then that trim decreases on average after using the cleaner then your saving fuel at any driving condition. It makes sense but still requires more samples to prove.

When I top up finally, I tend to clik it further slowly by hand to top up carefully a couple more times, to a point' where gas shows itself beyond the flipper closure . Relatively close scenarios, for mpg calc' comparisons.

I have found that synthetic oil and changing oil every 6 months or 5000 miles which ever comes first goes a long way. ATF/Gear Lube every 2 year or 24,000 miles which ever comes first! I think most people wait to long to use "magic elixirs" maybe adding this to routine maintenance every 2 years on anything with VVT and Turbo Charger's might be a thing in the future since oil consumption and VVT issues are getting more and more common across all brands!
@IsItTrueThat
@IsItTrueThat Жыл бұрын
I think you are correct. In this case he strictly followed Ford guidelines for oil changes and the problem still occurred. Just this month (about 15 months after this video) he had to replace the engine. The only flaw likely was in the type of oil used when the oil was regularly changed. Using your guidelines, especially with quality oil, might prevent premature wear on a new vehicle.

Fun video. I wonder if you put the disc up at the top with the other hand and the initial “fall” went left of the first peg, if the distribution at the bottom would have skewed to the left. What if the starting point wasn’t in the middle at the top but over a couple spots left or right?
@IsItTrueThat
@IsItTrueThat Жыл бұрын
Those are great questions. I just mounted the board up on a wall as a display so I can't test it. I like your thinking though and would guess you are right. Each peg could be tested and each direction from that peg could be tested. At the end, I would guess there would be one or two slots that would be favored by each of those options. Like in this example, slots four and five certainly were the most likely landing spot. If you had to bet a nickel on the outcome, how could you not say 4 or 5?

Thanks for doing this test and doing it all as well as any normal viewer should expect. I enjoyed the video. I’m wondering if you could do the test again and see if another try would result in just about the same results again or not. Have you tried a second bottle of ATS since this video?

Thanks! I haven't tried another bottle. I'd like to attempt another drive on the course to see if my gas mileage has recovered. It feels like it has, if in fact, it truly ever was lowered. I always test on a full tank to an empty tank. Put the additive into a 1/4 tank of gas and run it through. Then fill it up and run the test on another full tank to empty. Gives a much better view of accuracy and your fuel pump shutoff accuracy has less of an impact.

The pump will give you a bad reading . 1/4 to 1/2 a gallon will throw off your mileage .
@IsItTrueThat
@IsItTrueThat Жыл бұрын
That's not a bad thought. Just a 1/4 of a gallon in this case makes 1 mpg difference. Since pumps are checked by the state and I used the same pump, I don't think it occurred here. Still, you are right about the difficulty in measuring fuel and that when only driving 90 miles, a very small difference can have large consequences.
