I always test on a full tank to an empty tank. Put the additive into a 1/4 tank of gas and run it through. Then fill it up and run the test on another full tank to empty. Gives a much better view of accuracy and your fuel pump shutoff accuracy has less of an impact.

I had a 2012 kia rio that i bought brand new. When it was new I would get 30-35 mpg without trying. So over time my mpg gradually dropped over the 10 years that I've owned it and around 100k miles I was getting 27-28 mpg. Never ran fuel cleaner through it. I ran 1 bottle, $27, of BG 44K Platinum through it. The next tank on the same exact commute, I got 37 mpg. So when I watched this video and heard 'my car runs with no issues' I was not surprised at the results. My car was way down on mpg so I probably had clogged fuel injectors. If you don't have clogged fuel injectors, nothing is going to change. I now run a bottle once a year for maintenance.

I think you need to run through the full tank of gas to which you added the ATS treatment to get the full effect and you might need more than one treatment. I used the Royal Purple max-clean product and it took 3 successive treatments (i.e., w/3 full tanks) before I suddenly got a significant improvement in mileage (2003 Honda Odyssey) (went from ~18-20 mpg to ~24 mpg). When the vehicle was brand new, the stated mileage was 25 mpg highway, so I was clearly dealing with some issues that had reduced the mileage so much to that point. But the Royal Purple did the job to bring the mileage back up, although it took multiple treatments. But then Royal Purple is a third to half the price of ATS.

Humidity, temperature, headwind, tailwind, idle time, tire pressure. All variables that could account for such a small difference. That being said, if your truck is/was running perfectly before the treatment, after the treatment it’s likely to do little.
@IsItTrueThat2 жыл бұрын
Agree with everything you said. I picked a day that duplicated the previous run pretty closely. I did not record humidity though and there wasn't supposed to be any idle time, although in watching the video there was right at the end of the second run. Your last sentence is likely the whole issue. The truck off the show room floor likely was giving this same gas mileage. No additive is going to improve beyond that as someone else stated. Appreciate your comments.

Is it possible that your car's fuel injectors were already clean and did not need the CRF 505 treatment? That plus that there is no way that you can accurately gauge the gallons used with any real precision, so it looks to me like there was virtually no change in the MPG which brings me back to my original question. If the car did not need cleaning then I would not expect a change in MPG.
@IsItTrueThat Жыл бұрын
I agree with your main point, the truck's injectors were working fine and cleaning a perfectly fine working fuel system, is not going to improve gas mileage. I am not so certain that one cannot accurately measure gas used. The bigger issue I believe is that the miles traveled were so small that even a tiny difference in fuel measured translates to a large MPG change. As a side note, the truck gets the same gas mileage it always did. There was no long lasting "drop" in mileage. Thanks for watching and commenting.

@tc96z12 жыл бұрын
The biggest flaw I see 😢 issetting the expectati(ons that the initial voyage (with treatment) would qualify as peak output. You might get a whole different set of possibilities after running the treatment through several tanks and only then fill on empty with straight gas and run the test apples to apples. The treatment presumably is doing its job to ‘clean’ the engine components. The product is supposedly a cleaning treatment agent not an octane or fuel booster.
@IsItTrueThat2 жыл бұрын
Sorry, it may not have been clear because i chopped the video to make it shorter. I took gas mileage initially then drove until I got down to just over a quarter tank then added the fuel treatment. I drove that until I was nearly on fumes then refilled. The next day I topped off the tank to start the second test. There may have been some remnants of the cleaner still in the system but by that point they should have been highly diluted. You are right that measuring mileage during the cleaning process would not have been a fair comparison.
@pedrofernandez872923 күн бұрын

@DAVID-gf1es Жыл бұрын
You can't expect the fuel nozzle to click off at the same fill level every time. I bet you can get a couple quarts differrance just with nozzle clicks. A real test would be on a dyno with a certain measured amount of fuel. Or maybe a scan tool can tell you actual consumption based off fuel pump flow idk if that's possible or not. Scott Kilmer figures that if your fuel trim was high before you used the cleaner and then that trim decreases on average after using the cleaner then your saving fuel at any driving condition. It makes sense but still requires more samples to prove.

@IsItTrueThat2 жыл бұрын
The route was from East to West and then the reverse to complete the round trip. 45 miles one way and 45 miles back making the trip approx 90 miles. The elevation increase is 450 feet from East to West. Both test trips were as identical as I could reasonably achieve. Weather conditions and time of day were also close. I share your skepticism of additives.

You didn't record the ambient temperature. That can make a difference. I've been a drag race and noticed the cats get faster as the ambient temperature drops. I've also had to clean my spark plugs after doing a fuel injector & throttle body cleaning service. The stuff that comes off the valves ends up on the spark plugs. So either clean them and reuse them or change them.
@IsItTrueThat Жыл бұрын
Interesting comment about the residue getting on plugs. I'd have to test it to believe it but if true, it could be a factor. My recollection was that the first drive was 15 degrees hotter than the second drive but I may be wrong. All in all, I think the test was reasonably fair and proved that in my case, on a car with no drivability issues, using the cleaner did not improve gas mileage.

I wasn't clear about that. I had put the cleaner in, run the truck to near empty, filled up and then drove around a few days before starting the test trip with a newly topped off tank. I understand you didn't have a lot of equipment for testing, but this was very rudimentary and imprecise. You needed to follow the directions on the bottle, ensure the tanks had identical volumes of fuel (not just hearing the click), and run a longer trial over multiple iterations and take an average. Also, of the fuel system didn't haave issues prior to yhe treatment then nothing is being improved upon. Valiant effort nonetheless

In my three tests of ATS products none of the tests made a positive detectable difference for me BUT my tests were for specific situations. The oil treatment which is supposed to clean carbon deposits really seemed to deliver a good cleaning. My longer video on the subject shows how dirty the clean oil became after 15 minutes of cleaning. My method of testing the fuel treatment did not let me see the physical results. I do not know how well other brands work so can't give an opinion. Also, other commenters on this page say it is difficult to actually get delivery of the ATS product (at least six months ago it seemed to be). So, to answer your question, I don't know but if I had an issue that I really wanted to address by using a good fuel system cleaner, I'd go with the ATS.

I think that the differences in your mpg test is probably within the realm of statistical error. IOW, all the various things that account for your mileage measurement has some little differences between the first and second tests. Doing a single comparison between the additive and no additive in real world conditions is not enough times to account for variation in conditions.

That's not a bad thought. Just a 1/4 of a gallon in this case makes 1 mpg difference. Since pumps are checked by the state and I used the same pump, I don't think it occurred here. I think in an effort to keep the video short, I was not clear. I did do just what you suggested. The instructions says the bottle can be added to 5 to 20 gallons of fuel. I added it when I had just over 1/4 tank. I then drove the truck to nearly empty. I put gas in and a few days later, when I had the time, I did this test. I have no complaint with the product. I was trying to see if it would do something it never advertised it could do "improve gas mileage on a high mileage vehicle not exhibiting any carbon build up".
@dbfcrell83008 ай бұрын
I only have this to say.... Berryman's B-12 Chemtool seems to be the best bang for the buck in fuel system cleaners at $4-$5 a can. It shows the best results in multiple testing from multiple testers in multiple vehicles over long periods of time. Unlike most gas additives, B-12 burns when ignited with a flame. Most gas additives don't burn when ignited, so at the absolute very least, if Berryman's doesn't clean your engine well, it is at least working to run your engine. Also, gasoline itself is an excellent cleaner, so using a cleaner to give you better gas mileage (regardless what the bottle says) is not what it is for. It is to help clean carbon build up which MAY also improve mpg. It's for helping to clean the piston tops, upper cylinder, intake valves (possibly exhaust valves to a much lesser degree), injectors and maybe even the fuel pump where the gasoline's formulated additive package alone isn't capable of being any more effective. In fact, using cheap gas with Berryman's makes a lot of sense b/c Berryman's is a better cleaner than most name brand gasoline's additive package. If you can get Berryman's at a low enough price, you'll probably be ahead or break even money-wise over using Shell with Nitrogen (which is questionable if Shell 87 oct even has the same nitrogen package that their 91 oct has- they tell you nothing!). At least you know Berryman's is in your tank cause you put it there! This is just my opinion and I know and respect other opinions, except sponsored ones.
