I just signed up, had an impossible time even trying to set up my shop... so I looked up reviews and decided it's not worth my effort (I already have a website that offers prints and merch) I tried to close my store, and IT WON'T CLOSE! I'm worried now that they have my credit card # and will do something squirrely. The "help" page is completely blank.

what is th different between fine art and commercial arts ?
@lifeexpandedАй бұрын
That is definitely up for debate. For some, it's the motivation or purpose behind the work's creation. For others, it may depend on the envisioned audience. The Pop art movement challenged the distinction and is one of my favorite "fine" art movements. What's the difference for you? Is there one any more?

The last time I checked it was a beta program, in which they selected artists and automatically allowed color ways. I'm not sure if this has expanded to all artists, however. You can write Spoonflower directly, however, and they are usually responsive

@lifeexpanded5 ай бұрын
I would say, if you have A LOT of time to devote to marketing and put in the hours, you can probably make some money on most platforms. Gone are the days, however, that you can just casually post work on print on demand and have the dollars roll in. There is simply too much competition and AI has made these sites even more saturated on top of that. You may have more luck selling in person at Farmer's Markets, Holiday Markets, etc., than online. You could also sell directly off your own Instagram/social media platform. If you don't need the money, you can always give it a try on whichever platform you feel caters best to your intended audience. Just know that making decent money on these platforms is increasingly rare.

Redbubble and Society6 are just merely affiliate programs at this point. And without us artists, they would not even exist. I guess the 8% was the 50% sale from your 15% mark up? (7,5 rounded up). Basically that means every time they make a 50% off sale, you should increase your markup to compensate. I see that you still have your Society6 Account up, did you make any more experience like that since then?
@lifeexpanded7 ай бұрын
Your math is correct. My account is still there with a minimal amount of designs, but I have not looked at it in months. At this point, I'm more keeping the account open in case I want to custom create something for myself. There were a few products from Society6 that I enjoyed.

Nice video, but what you say about commercial art demanding less intellectual effort is partially inaccurate. That applies to painters who make pet portraits and such (but those who make human portraits sometimes are to be considered fine artists cause they aren't only technically skilled but really capture the soul of the model) but it does not apply to people like editorial illustrators, children's books illustrators and cartoonists. The first need to be super creative and witty, in order to create conceptual illustrations that summarize the content of articles in a playful and original way, using symbols that are effective but not too obvious. That's very difficult to do and mentally taxing. As for picture book illustrators and comic artists, they need to be much more than good at drawing, they need to be great visual storytellers, even when the story is written by others, they need to make an intensive use of their imagination to bring a story to life, they need to know about framing almost as much as a movie director does etc. That's really hard work, not to mention that they can't specialize in just one subject, to create the visuals for stories they need to be able to draw EVERYTHING from many angles, either in a realistic or stylized way. So, this is my take, not to invalidate your content but just to make people reflect on this aspect of some commercial artist careers.

@lifeexpanded11 ай бұрын
I have not personally tried Patternbank. I believe, however, that it allows a company/individual to purchase the digital pattern and use it at will, including for commercial purposes (and possibly without attribution). There are some concerns that a pattern sold on patternbank would be harder to privately license later, if someone else has already bought rights to the pattern. For most artists, this probably is not a big deal if you are not planning to approach companies about licensing deals. If you do decide to give it a try, I would love to hear your experience

I use the fill a yard option for my proofing, which saved me a ton of $. That said.. proofing is pretty important. I have found that I usually like what I get, but every so often, I do need to adjust size or even completely scrap a pattern once I have seen it in person.
@lifeexpanded Жыл бұрын
I am certainly skeptical about the quality of designs customers will receive after proofing goes away. Sure, they get to preview the design, but often those tiny errors are not obvious without looking at the physical proof

I would have preferred if new sellers had to pay to proof their designs until they have a certain number of patterns. Then Spoonflower guarantees quality since by then those sellers have improved their making process to product higher quality outputs.
@MellowMeMeditation Жыл бұрын
Another mechanism they should put in place is a waiting period before sellers can relist delisted items. Say a week or two. Then that forces sellers to actually think about patterns they have for sale and if they should really just remove or update a design.
@lifeexpanded Жыл бұрын
@@MellowMeMeditation I love both of your suggestions!

For me, as an artist from a distant country, one of the main obstacles to entering the Spoonflower market was the long and expensive delivery of samples of my fabrics. Thanks to you, I heard good news, thank you! I also think that the administration of Spoonflower is going in the right direction by taking care of all sides of the transaction: optimizing resources for themselves, fresh and constantly updated content for the client, and also a helping hand for artists and the right measures to keep them on their platform. A lot of people selling POD on Etsy lose money... as they calculate fees wrong. the mini art prints are 8$, with 10% being the set commission for artists. after seeing the shipping fee add-on few months ago I just raised my fees. Looks like, if this resulted in 0 $ that you even had set less than 10% commission on that item. Most of the artists I know place their commissions at 20-35%

Thank you, you shared lots of great thoughts. I'm a photographer who has used Society6 to sell some of my extra photographic work since 2016. I never was a huge seller on the website, but I myself (and many others it seems) have experienced a huge drop in traffic and sales over the past year or two. You hit the nail on the head with so many specific issues, but the biggest thing to me seems like the company and platform has completely stagnated either through poor business or by neglect from it's owners. The biggest tell is that the website's UI and design (which has always been lackluster in my opinion) has changed very little since I started using it in 2016. To me this is a huge red flag. Thriving tech companies and eCommerce websites change almost constantly these days, and for a company like Society6 to basically offer zero improvements over such a long time signals a completely stagnant operation from decreasing revenue and/or it's owners do not believe in it's future longevity and are just milking it for what it's worth until there's nothing left.

Generative AI doesn't take motifs from other people's work and then mix and match, collage style, as you might imagine. It uses existing works that it's seen as a reference (mathematically) and then tries to construct motifs from scratch, of a particular thing, in a particular style. Much the same way as "human" artists do but using an entirely different process. That's why you get the anomalies, because it doesn't stand back and asses what it's produced and think "nope, don't like that. That fox has only three legs". It's not thinking about what it's doing in a thoughtful and reasoned way. It's just using mathematics. The fox in your example is a classic depiction of a fox taken from Scandinavian folk art. It's a common motif that's been used by many artists, many times, over many years. It's not stealing anything. At least no more than we humans do, all the time. Technology has replaced many jobs that existed in the past, ever since the beginning of the industrial revolution, and it will continue to do so.
