ZZ is hated bc its like if Empire Strikes back were followed up w/ Phantom Menace rather than Jedi. Its tone is offensive to the palate in a way that betrays the viewers expectations. Setup & payoff. Hitchcock said it best when commenting on his masterpiece "Rope." I just finished Zeta as I only just began watching Gundam series after decades of casual gunpla building & ZZ is coming off as lame so far. Still going to trudge through it but ehh

Things nominally for kids having frequent nudity was honestly not ''that'' weird in Japanese media at the time. Since you mentioned Uchiyama Aki, look into his manga _Andro-Trio_ sometime, and note that it was originally released as shounen. Compared to *that* (which was reclassified as "Adults Only" in all its rereleases), Southern Cross is pretty tame.

Huh, if Tatsunoko had let Uchiyama Aki cook, it could have beaten Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ to the punch of combining the Real Robot and Lolicon booms, as well as being one of the earliest examples of a Real Robot comedy. (Toy is *guessing* his version had robots, because all the others versions did, and because of the flight-suit-like outfits seen in that concept art) And, despite its negative reputation among Western Gundam fans, it's always been fairly popular and successful in Japan. You don't get to be the third-most-commonly-appearing series in _Super Robot Wars,_ beating out even iconic associations like Mazinger Z or Getter Robo G and only beaten by Zeta Gundam and Char's Counterattack by being a show no-one likes.

This series hits all of the hallmark of a neo noir film, high profile murder by the fake skull man, corruption in high ranking authorities of the Ootomo city, the main character working against the system which is hayato, a single case that gets weirder and weirder as they dig into it, the feeling of alienation from his environment as mentioned by Hayato he no longer recognize the city he used to live in and how the authority distrust outsiders, the shadowy cult that plays a major role in the event that happened, Maya the femme fatale that lead both men into their death

I must have been 11 or 12 years old when I first saw Macross, in the second half of the 80s. Up until that point, animation was what came from the USA with Disney and Hanna Barbera, Transformers, G.I. Joe, etc. However, Macross was so different, so real (for lack of a better word) that it stuck with me to this day. When Focker dies, I was in shock, for me he was the protagonist of the series and the guys kill him. That blew my mind. To this day it is my favorite series, and I would give almost anything to have a live-action version. A good one, true to the original, no modern nonsense.

If a remake could be done with animation similar to (or better) than the animation in this following link, I'd totally go for it. So far, this is the best animation of Macross that I've seen thus far. kzbin.info/www/bejne/gorUqn-jqK6YrbMsi=RUtWfnVEBzOKl7QH

I actually quite like a few of these, i think nearly all the Matsumoto adaptations were great low budget asides. Although space symphony Martel and submarine super 99 are definitely the high quality examples with Gun frontier somewhere in the middle. Babel II and Mars look cool so I’d definitely try them out. Genma wars and wild 7 are definitely their worst offenders but hey I’m taking anime like this over high school dxd any day its got charm, and most of the openings are bangers so Godfather of bad anime is probably a stretch, god father of mediocre-pretty good anime i think it’s more likely

If there is one anime that needs a new dub here in the west it's this Hopefully Crunchyroll or Netflix (For better or worse in either camp) can re-produce a new english dub that can still be funny but discard the raunchier and em... spicier dialogue since it was still intended for a younger audience first

6:48 To be fair, not all sexism is leering, gay men are capable of Sexism as much as straight men. The issue is a lot of presumptions about women. That they are more inclined in supporting and Nurturing roles(they can be, but so can men) and no intrest to see them as anything else. Not all sexism is equal either, as this is more Annoying than Appalling. As severe as being short changed 50 cents. This isn't to say that just because it leans on a Steryotype it is automatically bad. There's this one lady in Gundam Zeta who falls in love with the villain and turns traitor, but the details makes it interesting. He also appealed to her nature as a Soldier as well as a woman. She had been deprived of both Intimacy and combat while working with the heroes, and as a former Anti Zeon Rebel she actually felt more comfortable with constant combat then waiting for peace to finally break. It makes it more about Alienation than "the nature of women"

All of the sequel incarnations of BGC never felt right because they never had the Boomer design continuity in mind, which made the world feel wrong. The Boomers in e1 alone blow anything from crash to 2040 away. They kindled ideas in the imagination of a boundless cyber to organic technology that can assimilate tech and matter, metals that can flex like muscle, almost like a biometalic polymer, powerful micro laser canons, effective micro jets for flying, strength greater than the terminator or robocop... more like a superhero. And they had this dark, almost HP lovecraft horror quality, tearing through skin, dark metal with glowing eyes. They evoke something almost demonic, not merely an AI story.

The problem with ZZ is that it aired 1 week after Z ended. Z ended on a really somber note. It was peak Shakespearean tragedy. To go from that to a slap-stick Looney Toons-esque comedy is super jarring. It was jarring back then and it was jarring when I first watched these shows last year. Don’t get me wrong, ZZ is awesome. I fell in love with it after things started ramping up about half way through the series. But those first 10 episodes or so are hard to get through because of the drastic tonal whiplash.

I do agree that what ZZ suffer most from, is the tonal whiplash from watching it right after Zeta. I'm sure that i would've liked it, and might like it on rewatch, but binging the main UC back to back I hated it.

@MercuryFalcon I'm not a fan of the American version of Macross. I felt like they ruined the original series. I love the original Japanese version of Macross from 1982 and it's movie Do You Remember Love? from 1984. That being said, even though I dislike Robotech , I do find the history of it very interesting. And I can't be too harsh on it. It did help people at that time get into Anime . Also the death threats is unhinged . I dislike how they licensed Macross to American, but I would never go that far .

I loved the show in original Japanese language and English dub one. But 100 per cent Japanese anime otaku Couldn't understand English of course. There are many US films and actors name on the line. About religion and colors issues are inside so I'm not going to introduce soon to otaku. That's the reason why im little confused. ADR was in top quality anyway but I need an explanation. Thanks to Steven Foster I finally reached out the Kyoto Animation classic: Clannad. Not a bad story. After I completely enjoyed 20 episodes so now I'm finding the official Italian copy and Spanish version on ebay... from Japan.
