I had both hips replaced two years ago. Ceramic ball on cross linked polyurethane, not dual mobility, but I seem to have a lot of mobility anyway, except for the sidekick. Has your doc said anything about life expectancy of your replacements with this level of training?
@fightness01
@fightness01 Ай бұрын
He said normally you could expect about 20 years lifespan. But I would expect that with the level of my activity (I train 5 days per week), the lifespan of my prosthetics may be significantly shorter. Personally I'm willing to take that risk at my age (currently age 44). If I need to get another replacement in 10-12 years, I can live with that. At least it give me some more time to do what I want to do physically in life.

Yes, I can do full MMA sparring, but I find it best to keep it light and make sure your partner knows about your hip. My doctor specifically spoke about being very careful with throws. I still practice throws and breakfalls, and I have not had a problem. But again, I'm being very careful with that.

Hi. I just had hip FAI/Labrum reconstruction 10 days ago and my surgeon opted to allow the LT Tear and Glute Min tear to heal on their own (which does impact some of the exercises I do as some of the strengthening exercises actually exacerbate the glute tear, ugh). Anywho, I began PT last week and the progression is slow as to be expected, much to my impatient chagrin...that being said, I noticed you mentioned how each video "phase" was utilized for about a month. How long after surgery were you able to do all these initial exercises? I'm supposed to be using crutches the first 2 weeks and thus, some of the exercises which involve unassisted weight bearing are basically not possible for a bit longer for me. Some of them, my PT has me already utilizing (the laying down isolated muscle-group exercises, for ex). My whole thing is, because I'm not working with someone who specifically rehabs fighters, I want to make sure I'm utilizing the best recovery plan for the sport that I can. Luckily, he has a sports physiotherapy approach, which is helpful, but the offices that our pro-fighters go to are out of network and $200/visit, so they just aren't viable for me. I'm excited to put these exercises into practice and see the effects I experience. Thanks so much for having them!

The set of procedures that I had done are different from yours, so I think you're going to have to defer to your surgeon and physical therapist on when you should begin each of the phases of the recovery program we put together. I had two (at different times for each side) full anterior hip replacements. You may want to consider showing your doctors and physical therapist the actual program phases (maybe just send them the links) and see when they think you're ready for each phase. In my situation the first phase began literally the day I returned home from surgery. Each subsequent phase began after exactly one month. That worked for me, but for you it may be different because of the procedure type.

Thank you and God bless you for taking the time to put this together! I'm 43 and my TRHR surgery is in 3 weeks. You have given me so much encouragement and motivation in regard to my rehab, recovery and hopefully return to at least training some of the disciplines I used to train in years ago (I've been out of the circuit for a while), even though my surgeon is adamant that going back to muay-thai (because of the kicking) or bjj (because of the twisting and throws) is a no-go, and says I can just go back to boxing if I so insist. Either way, what you have done here is priceless, and I just want to express my utter gratitude and appreciation for it. Did you have a similar push-back from your surgeons regarding returning to full MMA related training and/or eventually sparring? The bigger question too for me is, since I am getting a regular metal/polyethylene implant, and not a dual mobility one like yours, do you have any knowledge from feedback from your docs, etc as to whether the difference between the two in as far as durability and strength is that big, or is it more a matter of the dual-mobility ones having a wider angle of motion? In other words, in lay man's: is it that big of a difference or that big of a deal for me returning to MMA training if the implant is not a dual mobility type? p.s. you should enable some type of an option for viewers to donate to your channel, and also tell us you name, so we know who we are thanking 🙂(apologies if you did in another video, and I missed it).

Thanks very much for your support and your interest in the content. I can't speak for the medical community on this, but I can tell you that in my personal experience it is certainly possible to get back close to your previous capabilities after a total hip replacement (I now have both of mine replaced, and I'm still making progress). I think the main difference between the types of implants you're referring to is in the range of motion. That's why I chose the dual mobility device. I can't necessarily speak to the durability factor. After my second hip replacement, although he gave warnings about certain activities (especially judo and wrestling-style throwing techniques), he ultimately effectively cleared me to return to whatever activities I wanted to pursue, with pretty much no restrictions. I think the level of restriction your surgeon will place on you will depend on factors like the type of surgery, your age, the device itself, and the surgeon's own experience and opinions on the subject. I'd say, just be careful, and you can make progress back towards where you'd like to be. It's ultimately up to you how far you want to take it.

It's just my preferred target both because I like to get outside the opponent's guard and it's also the most devastating if you land it in a real fight (at the base of the skull). So you can kick high after hip replacement and putting hard work in physio/training?
@fightness01
@fightness01 Жыл бұрын
For me the answer is yes. It takes about 6 months after surgery before you can try to start kicking high with power again. But that may vary depending on what type of surgery you have, how old you are, and what your training level was before you needed a new hip. Also, no matter what, the only way you'll get back to that is by doing rigorous physical therapy and progressive re-training. Try the Fightness Hip Replacement Recovery Workout Program for MMA (7 Levels) for those purposes. You can find it under the "Specialized Workouts" playlist on the FIGHTNESS channel.

Yes, I am told that I'll almost certainly need a revision in the future since I am so young in getting my first replacement (first one at age 41). They last about 20 years (more or less depending on how much wear-and-tear you give them). I don't think there's necessarily a limit to how many of them you can get, but I know that they are less effective with each successive replacement because there is less and less bone for the surgeon to work with each time you get it done. According to my surgeon my arthritis was too advanced and the overall bone structure was too compromised for that option. thanks for this. I am 43 and will need a full hip replacement on the right side. I just talked to the doctor and he said with a dual mobility hip replacement I will be able to get back to training within a year. I am curious--do you think Judo is out of the question-say after a year? The doctor was okay with Jiu jitsu, boxing, etc. I didn't ask him about deadlifts or squats, but I mostly do body weight for my squats.

I was told that Judo poses the highest risk to the hip prosthesis of all the widely practiced martial arts because of the potential for dislocation of the joint when impacting the floor after a throw. But I've also read at least one study that showed very few actual dislocations or other injuries occur with judo players with a hip replacement. In my experience I think full speed randoori would be possible if you're careful and you're working with a competent partner that's aware of your issue. I think judo competition might be pretty risky, but certainly possible if you protect yourself well (and you're prepared for the potential consequences).

I am a former pro mma and muay thai fighter... 44 years training.. teaching full time 34 years... had both hips resurfaced.. '05 and '06... it is a continuous improvement but I have had to deal with limitations.. but... the absence of pain is a tremendous blessing..

I agree. The most important thing is the absence of (most of) the pain. I had my second full hip replacement earlier this year and I'm gradually getting back to near my full capacity for my age (42 as of today). I think I'm always going to be slightly limited by the prostheses, but I've been surprised at how much recuperative progress I've been able to make in a relatively short period of time. My surgeries were definitely worth it as far as I'm concerned.

That's very good! It's nice to see your ability after hip surgery like! I have a question after hip surgery how to train stretching? Have you some limitation?
@fightness01
@fightness01 Жыл бұрын
According to my surgeon the type of limitations you have in stretching after hip replacement surgery depends on the type of surgery you have. For example, with the anterior approach, you are less limited and really only have to watch out for extending your leg backwards and hyperextending your hip flexors. Whereas with the posterior approach there are many more limitations.

How's things going after the second hip replacement looks like you're back on your feet pretty good..
@fightness01
@fightness01 Жыл бұрын
Things are going well, but I've still got a long way to go. The most recent video was actually filmed before my second hip replacement, so don't judge my progress based on that. It's now been a little less than three months since my last surgery, and at this point I'm back to some boxing training and basic ground grappling movements. I haven't been able to progress much beyond that just yet, but it's coming soon.

It's something that most schools don't spend a lot of time on, which is why I've focused on it here. I like to put content on the channel that fills in the gaps in MMA training relative to what you typically see in most schools. Glad you like it.

Thanks for this. I’m far from a pro fighter, but I’m a 52 yo bjj brown belt. Just had a full replacement of the right and will prob do the left next year. My doctor says I can return to the mats eventually and I plan on doing so, but it is frightening. This video is very encouraging,

Yeah, it's not a pleasant experience but I definitely see myself returning to near-full training, with the caveat that I'll probably have to be very careful with being thrown or taken down. I had my second hip done about 2 months ago, and I'm already back to doing some boxing training and shadow fighting on the ground. There's light at the end of the tunnel.
