The reason there are so many good pipe organs from the 1970’s in Orem is because John Longhurst, professor of organ at BYU, lived in Orem and was a tireless missionary for pipe organs. He is the person we have to thank that the Conference Center isn’t served by a six-manual Johannus. He did so much to promote pipe organs in the LDS church.

You play ungodly classical music, drawing attention to the organist or boredom from many of the parishioners ... and then you say "Pipe organs are dying?" Nope. Just Christians who know how to really draw the congregation into the presence of God. Yes, that makes the organ die. As to the organ, yes, it's a Reuter.

Why is the LDS church running away from care for their pipe organs... I know they do take maintenance but they last so much longer then their digital counterparts... It makes no sense to me that they let them deteriorate then rip them out for a "digital counterpart" ... Ridiculous really.... I have seen a few of them married to certain digital models but the guy that put it together made it visably worse...

A small roto-rooter....YEAH! NOT. In my humble (but accurate) opinion, a small room like this with DEAD acoustics is better served by a excellent electronic instrument with adjustable reverb...and a stop list that you can do something with. Just because it is a pipe organ doesn't mean it is good nor sounds good. Case in point. That said, that is in no way criticizing these young men and their enthusiasm for playing this instrument and sharing this video with us.

I honestly almost agree with you… a digital organ would fill the space better at the fraction of the cost of an equivalently versatile pipe organ. This pipe organ was fun but there isn’t much to play around with, and digital organs usually have a handful of toys. I just can’t post a video demonstration an LDS Allen model and expect people to be interested 😂

Charles, if you are looking for incredible organs to check out, there is one about 2 hours away from Orem, Ut, that is much older and is still used weekly in our stake center. The manuals, pedals, pipes and blower are all contained in one big console. All the connections are mechanical and it still has beautiful rich tones, very nice voicing and is a beautiful instrument. It just might be worth the drive to check it out.

A huge flashback of memories watching this! Forty years ago when I was your same age I remember seeking out every pipe organ I could get my hands and feet on and it was thrilling to encounter each instrument. It is amazing the size of each instrument, the room it occupies, the composition of the pipes wood, metal all give each it's unique sound. This video was fun and how I wished I could have been with you for an in person experience! 🙂

I remember when that Stake Center was built, a mile from my childhood home, and my first organ teacher took the group of her students on an organ crawl of "winded" instruments in Orem/Provo ending with the Austin at the Provo Tabernacle, with the only 32' rank short of SLC (THE Aeolian-Skinner in the Tabernacle, of course). This was one of the instruments visited. Given this instrument has 11 (unified) ranks it is quite generous at a time when many humble churches were making do with 3 rank unified Moller Artistes. The stand-out register IMHO is the Gemshorn and its Celeste partner on the Swell.

I see by the below comments that there are not many people around with ant understanding of how a pipe organ works. There are no acoustics.....no reverberation of sound ,and a dreadful "mash" of sound. Get rid of the carpets, imprive the sound reflecting qualities of the room surfaces and get some lessons ! Chris. You need to have a chat with your organ teacher (assuming you have one) your comments on many things show your lack of education and experience in the real world. The organ has the sound of a 1970's organ. Organ design and style has moved on in the past 50 years and new organs do sound different.

It's so sad the Mormon church has fallen on hard times. The church can't afford to buy pipe organs for their meeting houses like they once did. I didn't realize the church was so destitute. Maybe it should sell off some of its property to help the situation.
@Charles-Reardon
@Charles-Reardon 2 күн бұрын
This is not my understanding. In the 80’s (I believe) the church banned real pipe organs from being built in chapels because they are so expensive to maintain. They stopped buying pipe organs way back then to keep finances in mind, and to my understanding it has been working very well. Their only priority is to get an instrument in there that can accompany, and digital organs do the job. Because the church owns such an incredible high number of chapels and temples it would be a money pit to put a pipe organ in each one. I would guess there are hundreds of thousands if not millions of LDS church buildings in the world.

The Mormon church has billions. They tell members they are broke so they don't stop tithe. That is not correct.
@Charles-Reardon
@Charles-Reardon Күн бұрын
I don’t necessarily agree with this either. The church broadcasts a biannual financial report after general conference sessions, and is relatively transparent with its finances. I have been a member my whole life and I’ve never met someone who thinks the church is broke. I still pay tithe even though the church has billions not only because it is a commandment and has associated blessings, but also because the church uses its billions to help the needy, build temples, expand the church and its education systems, etc.

I’ve played a very similar console at a Lutheran church in Denver, but I realize why. It’s a 1923 Wurlitzer that’s been reformulated into a church organ by Morel & Associates, and when they built that organ they were the Reuter dealer in Colorado, so it’s probably a Reuter console. It sounds terrible and like it’s in another building, but it’s the first pipe organ I ever played, so I have fond memories.
