Thanks for posting. 17 years now, in 2007 I couldn't figure out an easy math problem motivating me to find a diagnosis. Mri showed a significant 1.7" tumor. AA 2/3 DX Jan 08

A year and a half ago, I went from being a computer science professor to not being able to read, and forgetting the words of most things I understand. Strangely, I was able to write, but had to ask my computer to read what I wrote to ensure my writing was what I wanted (as I could not read it). It turned out I had gotten brain cancer, and was saved by a laser burning, so I am still alive. I have seen several items here in youtube made by you, and this one is the best. It shows you in a new role where you live an other life, shows you to have found new ways to appreciate who you are. I had to give up my professor role (actually I was dean of a university). But I ended up doing what you did, finding some other non academic sides of life to appreciate. I am doing practical things (wood and kayak working). I am impressed that you have ended where you are, bows for you in respect and have respect of what you did from my own perspective!!!

I had exactly the same thing after my stroke. I could write fine, but I couldn’t read. I worked hard, just as you clearly did, and most of it came back. So I speak from experience when I say that you are a hero.

Leftsided Thalamic stroke 2021, and after two types of P. T., two pain management facilities, 5 different pain meds, they have done nothing but make me irritable and frustrated. So I started smoking Idica CBD-THCA, and it mentally helps(anxiety), It also hits the CB-1 receptors in the brain cells which somehow directs the physical pain elsewhere. Steps, slopes and driving at night are my fears. Of course everyone reacts differently from smoking it or taking the gummies, but flower cost less than worms. It somehow ups brain activity. Makes you more into music, able to focus on chores and a motivational effect. Does it make finding words easier, not really. Helps with sleep. Does not stop the headaches you get from concentrating. It also helps with sleep and does give an euphoric effect(high feeling). I'm Still struggling today with Spasticity,, Rigity and motor function. Magnesium Glycolate helps with spasms. You are correct in trying to explain to someone what struggles stroke survivors cope with everyday. Explaining to anyone is like talking to the wall. Even the people that say, "you look great". If they could only feel our pain, would they then might understand our daily emotions.

Stroke survivor here. Every word of this is true. I was able to relearn to read, thank goodness, but I still feel the disability. A couple of days ago I had a TIA and lost it all again. Thank God it came back, but the fear is still there. Thank you for doing this video.

I had what I think was a stroke in 2020 and I suffered with alexia sine agraphia since then. I use voice to text to type now. Doctors refuse to do tests (Scotland) they say I haven’t had a stroke but they haven’t even done any tests. 🙁 I’m still fighting on though. I’m going to get my diagnosis

I first watched your video at Museum London. It really resonated with me. I had a Takotsubo (stress heart attack) and I walked like someone in their 80's for months. I am in my 50's. People would rush right past me. Invisible disabilites are difficult to live with. Thank you for sharing your story.

Make it simple as simple as you can! Cope with only what you can cope with at the immediate time. This may mean tapering down your circle of friends and outside interests for now. “Only for now”. Sleep sleep sleep! Ignore idiots just walk away with a smile on your face as trying to get them to realise you’re not an idiot is impossible.

You have put into words everything I have felt for over five years since my stroke but have not been able to put into words. There has not been a single day without this and I am so tired, also it hurts deeply that reading is not the part of my life it used to be.

I have a the same injury as you do. It sucks. However, I don't feel the need to wear a durag on my head as you do. However, I work everyday and don't wear do it on my head as if I had some sort of physical head Injury. A Band-Aid won't help this, I wish it would. I am not minimalizing the injury. I live with it every day and you are not helping. Please stop!

Alas, I to have alexia. According to new conventions, I just have alexia and NOT alexia without agraphia. So you can see that I write ok, but I cannot read what I have just written. I found your trick of using my screen reader to make sure what I am writing is ok. I had my stroke 5 years ago, but still struggle with reading. I admire your progress and would like to learn what your technique is for reading. I still revert to letter-by-letter but that is to tedious. Any suggestions for new methods?

Rebecca - I’m in the metro Detroit area if I can help you on your journey with the brain restoration research track I’m pursuing. I’m 3+ years post-injury plus the added concussion, post-COVID, mold and staccybotris in our home and bodies, and a natural gas leak in home while alone 70+% of the time or more. Could you help our young stroke survivor group and teach me how to advocate for better patient care in America? Thanks, Sarah! Great-granddaughter of a terrific French-Canadian! :)

@mydisorderedbrain: I had my stroke just over 3 years ago days before my 43rd birthday. I keep studying and researching solo with virtually no support except my poor beleaguered teenage son who was just 11 at the time! I read a study that post-stroke animals were given lithium and put on treadmills and the stroke damage was erased. I’d love to share my story and get all my research study notes compiled and tested with a young stroke group!
