Amazing video! You have very intelligently separated out the key factors that distinguish a diet for growth/reproduction from a diet for longevity. That is no small feat with all the noise, apparent contradictions, marketing, politics, and evangelism in nutrition. Easily one of the best nutrition videos I’ve ever watched. I hope the KZbin algorithm will soon add some zeroes to the end of its view count.

Yes, I swear literally almost no one appreciates that exact point you just mentioned. That general phenomena is so common that it has a term in evolution called “antagonist pleiotropy”. It can occur in many different context, but it’s my speculation that certain interventions in the short term “burn through stem cell reserves” to produce many new fresh somatic cells, thus optimizing reproduction, however do not optimize for long term health. We absolutely evolved eating high protein, but there was never a selective pressure to select for longevity under that context

I suspect that even fat or lipid availability can activate mTOR (together with glucose and protein)

So lipids are burned through beta oxidation, raising ATP, which inhibits AMPK, which has many effects, including the activation of mTOR. It is not potent or direct mTOR activation, however these systems are related to

At the beginning I was like..here comes the plant based Longo stuff. Listened to whole video though. I’d call it fair, but if we wait to “elderly” age to consume higher protein diets, have we already lost the battle with sarcopenia and too weak, frail, and low energy have good quality of life. What good is it to live longer, if we can’t do the things we what because of physical limitations?

Thank you for sharing your thoughts and listening to the entire video. It's great to see such engagement! Your point about the importance of higher protein intake earlier in life to combat sarcopenia is crucial. Sarcopenia, or the loss of muscle mass with age, can indeed lead to frailty, weakness, and reduced quality of life. It's important to highlight that incorporating strength training and consuming sufficient protein throughout life, not just in older age, can help maintain lean muscle mass. This not only supports physical capabilities but also enhances overall well-being and energy levels. By building and preserving muscle, we can ensure a more active and fulfilling life, allowing us to enjoy the activities we love. Your insight adds a valuable perspective to the conversation, emphasizing the balance between longevity and maintaining a high quality of life. Thank you again for your comment; it was thoughtful and enriching! Keep up the great engagement and focus on your health journey.

Thank you for the respectful comment. I agree quality of life is a completely different conversation and 100% valid (I think doctors often discount the important of quality of life. And I hope the video did not come off as “no protein”, rather I wanted to defend the standard of care diet guidelines

High or low protein, doesn’t matter. The body is smart when given the right environment. If you stop eating protein, you will start craving protein rich foods.

I agree protein is needed in the diet, especially if it helps satiate appetite and one has the goal of maximizing muscularity. I agree with the nutrition guidelines.

Can someone help! At 1:35, he adds electrons to the OH group so that it can leave. However, I though OH- was a bad leaving group so how does that work??
@sciencesimplified3890
@sciencesimplified3890 4 күн бұрын
There are biological enzymes that stabilize the OH, therefore facilitating the OH to leave as a leaving group… a common example is an enzyme protonates OH so it can leave as H2O
