I just bought the WE40 yesterday and am stoked for it to ship. I also got the 1500/2200 and the 4/2 micron strops. Is there a real need to go to the lower strops? I assume that a 2 should be plenty sufficient.
@WickedEdgePrecisionSharpeners3 сағат бұрын
The 4/2s are probably our favorite all-around strops. Unless you're chasing an absolutely perfect mirror polish, the 2 will give you a hair-popping finish on all of your blades!
@05subisti3 сағат бұрын
@WickedEdgePrecisionSharpeners thank you for the reply! I definitely don't need a crazy mirror polish. The functionality is much more impotent to me, so I will run the 4/2!! Greatly appreciated. I can't wait to get my hands on it.

I’ve followed this video and when I strop it leaves a bunch of the compound on the blade, almost like the blade is wiping it off. Should that happen a lot? Am I putting too much compound or does it need to dry before use? Thanks
@WickedEdgePrecisionSharpeners26 күн бұрын
Good question. The compound needs to dry before use. If you're using the emulsions, they dry pretty quickly. The pastes take a little longer to dry but you can speed it up by spraying a very small amount of rubbing alcohol on the newly applied pasted and then rubbing it in some more.

Yes, that should work fine. You could even go with something lower like 28° or 29°, but 30° would work well.

How can you tell when your stones need replacing? I have 60 / 80s and it took me at least 2 hours to reprofile Magnacut from 30° down to 26°. I ended up scrubbing the edges after awhile bc it just seemed like I wasn't making progress with burr. I do clean the stones with dish soap and plastic scrubber.
@WickedEdgePrecisionSharpeners26 күн бұрын
If there are any bald spots, then your stones need replacing. Other than that, they'll keep working but will continue to be less aggressive the more you use them. Two hours seems like a long time to change the angle by 4 degrees. Is the blade very thick?
@tillmerit843125 күн бұрын
@@WickedEdgePrecisionSharpeners 4mm thick blade
@WickedEdgePrecisionSharpeners25 күн бұрын
@@tillmerit8431 That makes sense. A thicker blade is going to need a lot of metal removed in a reprofile and that's going to take time.

Yeah, especially if you need twenty minutes to get a new angle and it's been getting exhausting 15 minutes ago... I can imagine it'll take even longer than that on certain knives, considering how wear resistant many modern steels are, how sht their geometry often is - ie lots of material to get rid of, how little pressure you can apply with that thing and how slow the process is per stroke.

Unfortunately, yes. Our manufacturing partners took on a government contract a couple a while ago and no longer had the bandwidth to continue making the stones for us. I would like to recommend using an eraser, just a regular large (like Hotwheels car sized) angled pencil eraser. Take it and swipe back and forth on the flat side of the eraser and you will see all the iron just lift right off the abrasive. Then when you're done just wipe clean the abrasive with your hand to knock off any bits of the eraser that might be on it. If your eraser is loaded up with gunk from the stones, just take your thumb and rub the eraser back and forth and it will roll up any debris on the eraser and clean it. Fastest and easiest way I've ever found to clean stones. Can work on other things than diamond, too. I've used it to clean the ceramic Wicked Edge stones I have. Doesn't work as well as it does with the diamonds, but it will still clean them. Oh, by the way, you don't need a lot of pressure/elbow grease to do this. Just firm pressure to make sure the stone is biting into the eraser and that's all. Considering how soft the eraser is, it shouldn't do anything to the life of the stone.

What do you do to fully remove the burr ...
@WickedEdgePrecisionSharpeners4 ай бұрын
After you have created a burr on both sides, an therefore reached the apex on both bevels you will move into sharpening. Through sharpening each side simultaneously the burr formed on either side will be so small it will not hinder working performance. There will always be a final stoke, however is not necessary. If, nonetheless, you find you want to work that last burr out you can take a strop and run it flat against the bevel to remove the final bit.

I find I am more comfortable with an upward motion. Is this not recommended?
@WickedEdgePrecisionSharpeners4 ай бұрын
A down and forward (edge leading) stroke is safer and creates a very slightly sharper and more durable edge than an up and forward (edge trailing) stroke but the performance improvement is very big. The main thing is safety - with an edge leading stroke, your hands are well below the knife edge if the stone falls off the tip of the blade. With an edge trailing stroke, your hand is much more exposed if the stone falls off the tip. It is kind of awkward to switch directions but most people are finding that they get used to it after a couple of knives.

What a cash grabbing waste lol. You do not need an 8 stone progression or 2 stones at once. I'm sure the system only works with your proprietary stones, which again you must buy a set of two of. A fool and his money are easily parted, but how do you sleep at night? Btw everyone, if you like this I have a new showering system you'll love. Its a progression of 7 soaps, 4 shampoos, 9 conditioners, 6 lotions, a combination of 23 face products, etc etc thats just the base model though if you only like to be a little clean. Each step uses a separate set of mitten loofahs that are disposable after every shower for YOUR convenience! Thats 49 bottles and 49 ten packs of each loofah glove set needed for each and every step. Wearing both gloves is necessary, and changing gloves for each bottle is also required. All this for only $1099.95! Sign up for the automatic monthly refill and save $9.95 per month! Why use one soap one shampoo and one conditioner when you can do it the RIGHT way at _TWICE_ the speed! _current payment options limited to cash up front or cash app, absolutely no returns, seller claims no responsiblity for excessive dryness or chemical burns. Must be 18 years or older and preferably possess an IQ no greater than 50._

The purpose of all sharpening tools is to actually sharpen a tool. Meaning how well the cutting is effective and for its increasing the durability of the edge life. The mirror at home or my car can do neither of those chores!
@WickedEdgePrecisionSharpeners6 ай бұрын
The cool thing about our system is that you can simultaneously have a beautiful, highly polished finish and a great, working edge. Certain tasks, such as bushcrafting and woodworking, actually benefit greatly from a highly polished edge and wouldn't do as well without it!

Website says you can attach another stabilizer to the front of the clamp. How would you do that?
@WickedEdgePrecisionSharpeners6 ай бұрын
When you push the first stabilizer into the vise, the pins that hold the vise jaws in place slide toward the back of the vise and stick out a little. You can grab ahold of them and pull them out and then insert the second stabilizer pins into the holes. From there, you use the second stabilizer rods to support the knife tip.

@WickedEdgePrecisionSharpeners7 ай бұрын
The Lapping Films do give a beautiful polish, no doubt. But the strops also serve different purposes than just a shine. They do a better job of removing the micro-serrations at the edge, leading to a more refined edge while also slightly rounding the bevels, creating a more durable edge than just using Lapping Films. Thanks!
@Marinos84197 ай бұрын
To be honest, you dont need the strops. Just use the lapping films if you want a mirror. I use a normal strop for maintaining an edge and burr removal. Those lapping films are incredible 🤑
