Hope to understand how Mr.Zwirn and Arena kept their investment in HK8107 Ficus Tech profitable as the 2nd largest shareholder, while 300+ employees are UNPAID for 5 months and have to Borrow money for Xmas and New Year meals. Stock price is stable at HKD0.60 as 27/12/2024. Good job! 👍

I am not a programmer, but do a lot of programming for my job and ChatGPT has atleast 10x'd my programming speed. Just the free version of ChatGPT as well. It still requires me to break the problem down and interpret the code. But it can put together small chunks of code very quickly and generally better quality than what I would do and I don't have to constantly look up particular commands. Then talking to a friend recently who is a programmer, she was telling me a lot of software engineers are loosing their jobs due to the higher productivity.

that dude seems to be going through the most drawn out mid-life crisis I've ever seen. he wants to change his podcast from an investment themed one to a generic one, or so he says. wouldn't be too surprised honestly if Bill announced tmr he would be moving to the Appalachian mountains to be a cattle rancher of some sort to podcast from there.

ATZ is a true Peter Lynch style investment for anyone raised in Vancouver, Toronto or maybe Montreal. It is hard to appreciate how deeply it penetrates the closets of its customers unless you grew up in these big Canadian cities. Gwen is right that it could be an idea for the next decade. ATZ has no penetration outside California and NY, and zero operations in Asia.

pretty cool to have a person who's done so much research into banking even though i don't believe ZIG or ZAG invest in financials. love that you can bring on a guest who is able to share insights into banks and what to look for. the question on red flags was great, and even asking what are levered assets. even if tobias knew, i didn't, and she explained it concisely.

Anywhere outside of the US is really tough to invest for cultural reasons. I’m Bulgarian by birth, but a world traveler and when I go to a country I like to study cultural ethos and behavior. I have many stories, but the short of it is: Nowhere in the world in capital success celebrated and supported nearly as much as in the US. Warren is an American hero. The richest business owners in other countries are public enemy #1. This leads to a cap on success. Many of the best foreign companies pay 70-90% in taxes to the government just so they are allowed to exist. It’s also hard to innovate when you are so worried about survival in your host country.

The more of these active cigar-butt type investment strategies I listen to, the more glad I am that in 2011-2012 I put my entire net worth in high quality companies like Apple,Google,Costco,Visa,Mastercard, Northrop Grumman, etc. Having to constantly be faced with extremely difficult problems with low quality businesses is too difficult for my simple mind. The day I decided to follow Philip Fisher and move away from Ben Graham my life became far more simple.

Buffett says ignore macro but he sold his TSM position where Saber rattling over Taiwan. There are 4 big Unknown for China, possible Taiwan Invasion, a return to heavy handedness in companies by the CCP and there's the Trade Wars which are all 3 big unknowns and difficult to figure out. There may also be a return of the threat of delisting Chinese companies from the US which may push people to use ETF's instead of owning the stocks directly just to have liquidity a bit longer if they're delisted. This could be addressed by China having their most important firms listed on the TSX as well.

That was a good one, Jake 👍. I’m a tennis pro by trade. It reminds me of how difficult it is to teach older people new technique because their muscle groups are so wired to move in a certain way, they’ve lost the ability to disassociate muscle activation in isolation or in conjunction with different muscles. In other words, that portion of their “katemari?” is so massive, that changing it or cutting it off is nearly impossible, and if they do it they feel like they’ve lost a part of themselves and resist the change at least subconsciously. It’s tragic, because adults are always way more excited about learning and progress than kids. Where as changing or learning a new technique for kids is just another day at the park and “programming” or tacking on new concepts to a small “katamari” feels effortless, because of the lack of mass or years of inertia. 🤷‍♂️

Have you thought of converting BCM Focus Small/Micro-Cap Fund (BCSMX) to an ETF when net assets are higher? You're strategy seems relatively low turnover, but an ETF has great tax efficiency and is an ideal structure for long-term, taxable investors. Great discussions! Thanks

Thank you guys for the episode. Loved today's guest and the overall approach. I tend to have similar opinions towards UK insurers and reinsurers as they are really cheap at the moment. Also interesting the insight to look at small cap Japan. I stopped looking at that market following the recent run, but there might be some still some gems then.
