Great video! I always have a question about decanting. If I do not have a decanter but I need the wine to be decanted fast, regardless of elegance and convention, can I just push back the cork/cap and have a big shake? 😂 I wonder if it might technically help to oxidise the wine thoroughly?

Great video as always. Your coverage of Standish annually has always been a highlight. Will advocate for the “video after release” camp. Allocations are tight enough! Even if I have the ability to buy a case or more of my favourite I’d rather not compete :)

when I was drinking Kumeu River in the 80s (I went to school with Mate's son), they were doing malolactic. You didn't mention that. Are they no longer making buttery chardonnays?

Standish 2022 the Standish 50% whole bunch, cooler year, Greenock subregion of the Barossa, red not dark earth (Maranaga). Greenock Creek wines may have some recognition overseas? I see Marananga as offering power and rich wines, Greenock I see generally as being more about fruit, but this wine goes in the complete other direction. This wine is more about spices and mineral ores. My bitter soul gravitates to this wine of the four wines tonight (Standish 2022 The Relic, Clonal killer 2022 O'Riada, Frankland Estate 2020 Isolation Ridge Syrahare the others). For a start, I love cumin and fennel seed and these are strong notes on the nose and palate. Black pepper and Ancho Chili - that warm, spice and earth. There's some blood orange and ripe raspberry and some plum and a whole lot of charcuterie and smoke. Clearly worth an 'Outstanding' rating - (Uriah) heaps of intensity and length - Neil Young's 'Cortez the Killer'. Mouth coating and dense and chewy. Complex. Some bitter tannins. But is this wine in all its parts equal to Neil Young's 'Cortez the Killer', or the even better 'Danger Bird'? Maybe. You have to be good with the style. This is mouth coating stuff. It is not Barossa fruit jam, but I am not sure that I don't find the weight oppressive: And like those memories the rain keeps pounding down, down, down.

Wine is of course subjective and yet there is room for a difference of palate between Mr & Mrs Public and well educated professionals. Erin is one of the best assessors of wine I've ever seen. Complex yet clearly understandable and relatable descriptions. Though I'm curious why these magnificent Chardonnays are still deemed 'less than' the leading Grand Crus offerings?

Erin, I'm so glad to have discovered this channel. Over the last couple of years I've gone head first into wine and some of my favorite bottles have been Barossa and Clare Valley reds. I have a 2021 Clonakilla shiraz/viognier and I'm intrigued by your comments (here and in your RP notes) on its evolution and increased complexity over the course of a week. I don't want to wait 10 years to drink it. Should I open it a day or two before drinking? Or decant for multiple hours beforehand? What do you recommend? Thanks

I've got a bottle of the 2021. I've never tasted Clonakilla before. I wasn't sure how long to keep it, as I heard it was a difficult vintage. I'll open it in 2033; see what happens.

Scratch a lemon - the rind has oil in it and is more aromatically concentrated than lemon juice. Doesn’t have to be lemon, can be orange, mandarin… they had different notes but similar concentration

Question whether if you were drinking for yourself you'd be drinking the Chardonnay straight out of the bottle? Also, would the tasting and your comments be different if the wine had breathed a little. Thanks!

Good question. I would certainly drink it straight from the bottle (ie with a glass(!), without decanting), and my comments would evolve as the wine does. For critical review I must open and taste, and then write. With no further preparation than that. This is to ensure as much consistency between myself and the ‘average’ drinker as possible, and it is also a measure of consistency when tasting bottles of many different styles.

Great review as always Erin. I know their Chardy is the top echelon of Aussie Chardy’s.. but your descriptors had me dying to taste a glass so is there anything from WA that you would say compares stylistically to this that I could access?

The Giaconda Chardonnay is so distinctively reductive, that there are few Chardonnays that emulate it with as much success. WA doesn’t do reduction as well as it does fruit power… in my opinion. Wines like Vasse Felix Heytesbury with several years on it - say, 3-7 ideally, Pierro VR are both superb wines, although neither are reductive like Giaconda.

Your review of these wines are charming but over descriptive, reminding me of the first few weeks into a new personal relationship. It would be refreshing for wine critics to discuss less favourable aspects of a wine as to why they might warrant a lower score. Just a balanced view.

Well - I agree with you. However, I remain in the ‘honeymoon’ phase with this wine. To offer you less favourable aspects of the wine would be to fabricate things that I do not see. There are many other examples where I am ‘more balanced’ in my positive and negative observations - this is critical review. Yin and Yang. Thanks for watching, and for the frank commentary.

Giaconda charddy is excellent, and their Pinot very good. Had a 2018 giaconda Nebbiolo last week and it was earthy-cherry-chocolate, and pretty good but not my taste - could appreciate it but ours went in a very nice stew.

Hello Erin… many thanks for the time effort to prepare this (again) hi quality, entertaining video. If you have a moment would appreciate a clarification on your enjoyment of REDUCTIVE NOTES on the Rossanne and Chardonnay. (Here in US ???) that typically connotes: rotten egg, burnt matches/rubber, and/or garlic, onion. Is that what you meant… and liked?

Thanks Bertie. These wines cellar very well, although I’d say that since they went to screwcap for the whites, they are even better in time. Depends on the vintage and how it expresses, but I like to drink them at every age, usually (for me) in their first decade. But I’ve had many bottle looking great into the second decade, too.

No Warner vineyard Shiraz? epic winemaker, in the past I've quietly bought wine where he's been the contract winemaker ( easier on the wallet) and his second wines which are very reasonable

last two years releases have been called "beechworth shiraz" and blended from warner and estate vineyards. I suspect due to yields? but very good stuff!

Yes I agree fully. I was only reviewing here the Estate wines, but have bought the Nantua Chardonnay (as an example of a second wine) many times as a great ‘drink now’ option.

He manages balance even when the alcohols are higher… This producer particularly is a sure bet. Hard to get, though! Will do a video on the upcoming 2023 release in July.

Like many, I bought these wines within minutes of getting the email from Dan. I have had such a wonderful experience with his wines that I will continue to do so. Immediately after ordering I went looking for your review on WA and also checked Halliday. I quite liked the fact that there was nothing there yet, I enjoy the sense of anticipation that creates. On a quality to price ratio, I think Standish is comfortably the #1 producer in the country. No one else does what he does at that price. I also think he is up there purely on the merits of what he produces. Loved the video, and how it supplements the notes, but next year let the people wait again.

@@erinlarkin Part of it is selfish. I am going to buy the wines anyway, and I don’t want the competition reviews like this year’s bring. I agree with you about how personal wine is. I follow reviewers with a similar taste to me. For example, I prefer your notes on Chardonnay anyone else in Australia, because our preferences for that grape are so similar. For Shiraz you tend a little more towards the ethereal than me, so I take that into account when looking at your scores.

I was at Henschke today (tasted 8, bought Euphonium) and drove back past Dan's. I find we all have different preferences. Mine leans towards Marananga but I once tasted a Langmeil Pure Eden that was the closest to perfection since Kym Jenke's reserve shiraz. I try to wait to around 8 years old. I've tried The Relic but must try Schubert's Theorem.
