Excellent ratio during Peak season on the big W. Usually every 5 min for me but you kinda need to be on your game. Love going to this area which is much closer than Bonneville D.

Great video! It was still good into the first week of July there! I use my shad for crab bait so I don't bleed them. Have you noticed any difference in the bled shad as opposed to whole when using for crab bait? I'm very excited that my son's Angler's & Shellfish Licenses came from his caseworker via the state last week. Hopefully I will convince him to head to the coast for a day trip in the coming weeks. A good time to try to use up some of the old shad from last year and clear space in the chest freezer!

Late run on the W. The fish I kept was going to be smoked and pressure cooked. I guess if your going to steam it or cook fresh it would make a difference having them bled. These were going to be smoked and canned. I'm sure it wouldn't make a big difference. Congrats on the license and soon be able to go use those year old shad for crabbing. Should work just fine. 🤙🏽🤙🏽

Idk how this guy gets away with fishing in closures. I know the tourists don’t know and it doesn’t affect them directly, but it sure does affect everyone else that lives here. Especially those of us who fish and choose to play by the rules.

WOW. Nobody is there! I wish I had made it out to Bonneville this year. Just a little over a week ago was my last trek to the Back Yard river and I got those 5 shad in a little over an hour. The first jig I tried wasn't producing (white shad dart with red head) so I switched to the Chartreuse Shad Dart with dark green head and BOOM... 3 shad back to back. I lost three after that so close to the river bank but oh well, it was fun1 The last two I caught with a Chartreuse dart with red head. I think I could have caught more but my time was up. On an earlier trip to the back yard river I had success with the 1/32 jig heads (with brass hooks) I picked up at BiMart and have a powder coating setup so I coated a handful of hot pink and chartreuse jig heads. I put a very tiny (like 1/2") swim tail grub on those and the shad love them. The grubs are either hot pink or chartreuse and I pair them up with the opposite color jig head. I didn't have the right size hooks to try your awesome setup from earlier in the season. I'll try next year. Have you tried the red circle hook with a chartreuse bead tied above the hook? I saw that in a Washington Dept of Fish & Game post somewhere and thought I should try that next year too. We lucked into a free shellfish and fishing license for my adult son through his disability caseworker and my next goal is to find a creative way to introduce him to crabbing! That will solve my inability to get out to the coast for sure! Great video as always, Hale'!

For those people that may want to fish here, you are NOT allowed to fish from straight out from walls towards the Natatorium. That is closed permanently, so even if you hook up to a fish, It must not bite from the Diamond Head side of Walls, you can only bring it up on the Ewa side towards the Duke Kahanamoku Statue. The guy shooting this video should have held the line and fish, till the fisherman, released line while cameraman held fish there, and Paul went on the beach towards Ewa and pulled the 'omilu from an angle through the opening. He's lucky the DLNR weren't there, they would confiscate this film as evidence, and then charge and fine Paul. Not sure what the amount would be.

Please refer to the DLNR Regulated Fishing Areas on Oahu webpage. No fishing in Waikiki MLCD at Anytime! See their map. The Waikīkī Marine Life Conservation District (MLCD) extends from the groin at Kapahulu Avenue(east side of Waikiki Walls) to the ewa wall of the Waikīkī War Memorial Natatorium. Do not confuse this area with The Waikīkī-Diamond Head Shoreline Fisheries Management Area (from Natatorium to Lighthouse) that allows fishing on even numbered years.
