You know what we need less of? Fantasy series that meanders over 5-8 books (I'm looking at you, Tahereh Mafi!) I love books set in the same world, side characters getting their own books etc. But the same characters getting stretched out over 5 books is exhausting. Let us find new vehicles to explore intricate worlds. It's the one restriction I'm placing on myself - characters must drive my books and if the MCs arc is over, then we are starting a new series in the same world instead of stretching them out over the plot.

I don't know - some series deserve a trilogy to wrap all the arcs (Sox of Crows!) especially if they have had to create a new world in the first book. The only reason SoC gets away with a duology is because it had the world and magic system established in the Shadow and Bone series. Having said that, S&B is an example series that absolutely should have been a duology - like entire half of the second book and the third book can all have been compressed into one punchy sequel.
