Do you clean out the nasal cavity as many other videos suggest to avoid discoloration in the future?! This is my first time doing this. Also, what temp should it be on?!
@usskullhunter9 сағат бұрын
No, maceration completely breaks down the organic material so there is no need to do anything other than the maceration. between 80-100 degrees Fahrenheit works well

There are several methods and like you said they all have their pros and cons. I did my first try at a skull process where you skin it, boil it with water and Dawn dish soap. I did a slow simmer for about 3 hours. Then pressure washed and used needle nose and a narrow screw driver mostly. Whitened with 12% Hydrogen Peroxide by painting it on liberally with a 1 1/2 inch brush. No smell at all and only took a few days working when I had time. If you are doing many skulls though it would be labor intensive. Thanks for your great content!

Do you leave the brains in when you do this process

Hi Hunter. I buried a seabird skull last Spring. In dirt. I took it out yesterday. The bottom jaw fell off. I can glue it back. It didn't smell until I stared to clean it up. There was hardened fat I guess on beak that I scraped off but I think also inside the skull there is some smelly residue. I am afraid to boil it. 1. the smell? 2. it may fall apart more? What would you suggest? I could take a bucket of hot water out side and try and clean it with a small brush. Would I still use peroxide after? Cheers
@usskullhunter10 күн бұрын
You will need to macerate a bit in warm water for a while to help clean up any remaining biological material. Soak in warm water for a week and then change the water and repeat. Then move onto peroxide.

Just got done slaughtering one of my goats, and I have had my past skulls stolen from my compost piles, so I've been binging this series looking for a quicker, more secure method to get a clean skull before winter sets in. Nice vid! I know the autumn is fast approaching, but could you please make a video on cleaning bird skulls? Are they much different in preparation, due to the thinner bones?

I won’t process another head with any different method moving forward, this is amazing! I just simmered my elk head and it has not turned out the way I had hoped so far. Would I still be able to use the maceration process?
@usskullhunter10 күн бұрын
Yes, maceration would be the best way to save the skull because it is gentle on the bone. Hope it comes out good!

Can you speak more about how to get the corpse wax off? I found a roadkill elk skull and it was mostly clean on the road. I hung it up on my shed and overtime corpse wax developed on the top of the skull. Now it’s turning black on top of the wax. Anyway to speed this process up? Will the hydrogen peroxide bath, take care of that?
@usskullhunter7 күн бұрын
Hydrogen peroxide will help a small amount to break it up. A good method I have found is this kzbin.info/www/bejne/fIqQlKCNa8qnZq8

Hello, so I have already simmered my deer head in dawn dish soap and gotten some big chunks out. Would it be too late to warm water macerate the rest of the meat off since it has already been simmered and the meat is cooked?
@usskullhunter9 сағат бұрын
No, you can still macerate it. It might take a few water changes to get started on the maceration bit, but, it is possible

Hey, I just found your video. I attempted to do a skull maceration on a buck skull for the first time but I initially started with soap and water in the mix. I read some people do it with soap & water, but I'm also seeing a lot of people say to only use water. I changed out the water after 4 days, it smelled horrible, and I put only water into the bucket this time but I haven't noticed any progress over the past 4 days. The water looks cloudy but not brown like it was before I changed the water. Do you have any ideas what's wrong? Should I just change the water again? I have the temp around 80-90F.
@usskullhunter9 сағат бұрын
Hey! So, I am a bit late on responding. Before I offer some guidance, how has it been going on the skull since you made this comment?
@truoutdoors6 сағат бұрын
@@usskullhunter I think I left it in the water for another 1-2 weeks (changing the water every 2-3 days) with no visible progress. I decided to simmer the rest of the flesh off. The euro mount still turned out good. Next time should I soak it in only water from the start?
