Great advice, thanks for producing a great channel! When starting out on this strength endurance phase, what constitutes a ‘good block’ or when do you know you’re ready to increase weight & reduce reps?

Cycling isn’t weight baring. Your body is supported by five contact points. Take tdf pros. Their cycling fitness has zero crossover to anything else. The second they get off the bike they are very deconditioned. Did you see this years tour when those riders were doing push ups as a goof? They struggled at doing pushups. 25 year old guys struggled at doing push ups.
@veloperformance19 күн бұрын
No I did t see that. 100% agree that cyclist especially masters need to hit the gym first all sorts of reasons past perform. I talk about this a lot on my channel.
@randygravel205719 күн бұрын
@@veloperformance A lot of riders say added weight is a negative. They think you lift some weights and you gain muscle. It takes a lot of work to produce one pound of muscle out of thin air. They would gain strength without gaining a once of muscle.

Ok 61 years of age. Just started cycling a few years. Gravel racing in Michigan a couple. Been competitive lately. But the first few miles of a race when the leaders are pushing the pace I just can’t hold to the point to where they settle down at a more manageable pace. How should I train for and warm up before these races for this push at the start of races? Thanks Dave
@veloperformance27 күн бұрын
That’s a big question but you need to work on what you’re not good at. Strength will always be the foundation of your power so keep that in view. In the bike you’ll need to train specifically hard once a week maybe once every 8/9 days. Short hard efforts into threshold would be a good start point.
@robdrelich856328 күн бұрын
Yoga is a very big tent .... Granted one doesn't exceed body weight but (depending on the style of yoga and the sequence of positions) the strength and flexibility along with fine muscle adaptation and skeletal alignment pays huge dividends on the bike. It's holistic rather than focused on single muscle groups
@veloperformance28 күн бұрын
I agree and yes from a low start point it builds strength too however to get progression you have to load the body. Body weight eventually is not enough to stimulate the adaption.
@robdrelich856327 күн бұрын
I would like to add regarding strength training with body weight and yoga, there is a great deal of yoga positions and variations / active movement which are done on one leg, or one arm. Isn’t this effectively double body weight strength training?
@veloperformance27 күн бұрын
@@robdrelich8563 its progression for sure but again once you’ve reached that body weight progression you have to load the muscle more that’s where loaded strength training is key.

I gotta eat every 2-3 hours during the day or I'll pay dearly. Here's what today looks like: Breakfast - three large eggs and three pieces of Butterball turkey bacon wrapped in a tortilla with 2 tbsp sour cream, 3.5 servings of PB Fit on keto toast. Two hours later, a sliced banana, 100 grams of frozen blueberries, 159 grams of fresh pineapple. Lunch - 129 grams of tilapia, 284 grams frozen broccoli, four 1-second squirts of avocado oil spray. Around 2 or p.m., two slices of Foster Farms turkey deli meat in a lo-carb flatbread (150 kcals), mustard, and maybe a serving of lily's no sugar added chocolate bar. Dinner - 7 or 8 oz of fish (pollock, tilapia, salmon, etc). Snack: three oz of turkey or chicken jerky, maybe a fuji apple as well. Today was push endurance day, so don't need as many carbs. Friday is threshold day in the a.m. for 1.5 hours. Will consume one tbsp MCT oil and one serving PB Fit 30 min before, three or four dates during, porridge and blueberries after, plus a couple of eggs. And so on. Nutrition keeps me going!

I found the best solution for hunger management is to eat one meal a day with no snacking. All my rides are fasted and I never bonk. The key is to become metabolic flexible/fat adapted. All of the sports energy bars gels and drinks are terrible for your liver and teeth.
@veloperformanceАй бұрын
There are some interesting studies suggesting fasting positively affects satiety. I don’t recommend all rides to be fasted for reasons often discussed on this channel. If your oral hygiene is poor energy products won’t be great for your teeth. Feel free to share any data showing energy produce in healthy trained cyclists causing liver issues. I’m intrigued.
@MrKadillakАй бұрын
Excess sugar clearly stresses the liver(same as alcohol) leading to liver disease. Energy gels and bars are almost pure glucose/fructose.

Great advice, autumn & winter is a tempting time to socialise and quietly over-fuel as well as under-exert. Cyclocross has been a useful outlet for me. It gives enough motivation to avoid over eating and make the most of the training compromises winter weather forces upon us. The club run on Sunday is a great leg shakeout after a good cross race on Saturday….and you’ve earned your tea & sticky cake😉
