In the "Battle of the Planets" version (The episode, 'The Conway Tape Trap'), it's simply Mark (Ken) and Jason (Joe) having a tense discussion where Jason is expressing intense frustration at being "Second in Command" and never being allowed to lead or show his full potential. Here, it's Joe knowing that he's dying from a brain tumor, and he doesn't want to tell his teammates. Ken presses the issue, Joe attacks, they have a big brawl. They then simmer down and run off. Everything between 0:37 to 2:01 had been cut out for the "BotP" scene. I feel that "Battle of the Planets" and "Gatchaman" have enough differences to the point where they are practically are two completely different shows with different characters. The former is a space adventure with stuff like 7-Zark-7, interplanetary travel and other things added in, and the episodes are out of order, so Sandy Frank's team basically created a totally different continuity with different scripts and new stories. Thus, rather than seeing "BotP' as a horrible hack job of "Gatchaman", it should be seen as a different series altogether. While the "Gatchaman"-verse" is mostly Earth-bound, gritty and in Japan with Japanese characters, the "BotP"-verse is an American space opera with (presumably) Caucasian characters (although you can still see them as Asian if you wish). Early Anime imports to the West were often Westernized so much that kids back in the day had no idea the characters were supposed to be Asian. Thus, you get what I call "Schrodinger's Ethnicity" where they could be either white or Asian and still be correct. Fortunately, today's Anime importers aren't ignorant or racist and they no longer feel the need to "westernize" or "whitewash', so Animanga characters can be their true selves. Now, I can look at Anime and Manga and truly feel, "Yeah, they're Japanese"... whereas with the old stuff I remember from childhood, I still see "G-1 / The Eagle" as sort of a dark-haired Shawn Cassidy (a 70's heartthrob. He was in the TV show 'The Hardy Boys'. I think he was related to another 1970's heartthrob, David Cassidy, of 'The Partridge Family') with Casey Kasem's voice (instead of a super-young version of Sonny Chiba, as the 'Gatchaman' creators intended). It's weird. Anyhoo, I always enjoyed "BotP' and grew up with it as a child, so it stuck with me more. That said, "Gatchaman" is great in its own way. It depends on one's taste.

The lyrics remind me of what is happening to western society today. Only one man can save us: Donald Trump. This song reminds me of Trump coming to power to save the world. I think he is fantastic! SOS President Trump - we need you more than ever! Save humanity and the world!

I voiced Joe for the English dub when ADV Films released the whole series. As a child of the 70s and 80s it was such an honor and a pleasure to be able to work on something that I had watched when it was Battle of the Planets as a kid. I know that some people don’t prefer the English dub versions of anime but I hope that I did this series justice and I’m proud to have been a part of it.

You did the series and character justice! Joe was a badass, but also very sensitive and caring. He had lousy luck with women though!

This kind of detailed art never repeated in anime. It's far more detailed on the side of nature now, via Studio Ghibli. Nature is well represented, but there are no characters who look as realistic as Ken or Joe now.
