I don't remember having seen a movie _about_ a therapist that isn't a comedy. Most movie therapists seem there to represent mythical archetypes in a _modern_ way. Maybe ancient Greeks would use gods instead.

Rick and morties realizes rick is kinda a narcissist. If someones "bored" with it and is lashing. When youve seen everything. Contending with Rick allows Rick to have reason to come back. But he cant be too insulted or he'll lash.

1:04:55 The reason Will is pissed is because everyone looks at him and thinks what they would do with his intelligence, then push him to fulfill their dream, not his. Everything is always a fight with him not because he's the one picking the fights, but because everyone else has expectations for him they don't realize they even have, let alone realize that they're not entitled to. They mean well, so they conclude that they are doing good, and his negative reactions to them is a sign of him being irrational. Will is the only rational person in the film. He's the only one with his eye open. The rest just react to stimuli.

I love the Rick conversation at 19:00 because I think I would respond somewhat like Rick here. I would be mostly fine with psychoanalysis, but I despise those little "that must be really hard" type affirmations. it feels belittling and infantilizing, like asking me if my boo boo is ok

one of the most egregious things for me was how the slaughter of the air nomads was handled. It was a wiping of an entire group of people, and a complete tragedy, yet the fight scenes on it just felt like an excuse to show off how awesome the action is. The genocide of a peaceful group of people should not be made into a spectacle. It should be treated with the respect it deserves and be upsetting, disturbing, and sad.

I hope in the One Piece remake, they make it very ambiguous what Kuma is doing when he pops each Straw Hat. New watchers should have a moment of complete despair, not knowing what is happening to their favourite characters, cursing Kuma's name and be left devastated all the way up through Summit War. So many people watch this sequence in the anime and immediately know that Kuma is saving them. I think that robs the scene of its impact, especially when Luffy breaks down and thinks he's failed his nakama. This makes it all the more hopeful when its revealed what their fates are and later we reflect on the hate we feel for Kuma and realise just what he did and who he is after all he's gone through.

One big Luffy v Usopp critique people have with Big U is where was any of this fight when you first got jumped by the Franky Fam? He says he’s weak and broken just like Merry but if he just plans for the fight he can make a big impact.

The last episode is especially good when it comes to this! It’s a really good anime and totally underrated but it’s very girly so I don’t expect everyone in the world to like it.

I feel like this issue kinda falls into the realm where it should be treated with the same level of carefulness as representations of mental ilnesses in media. Like, if you can't represent it with the respect it deserves, then maybe don't and make up something fictional that serves the narrative instead. Especially in fantasy shows, there isn't reallt a reason to bring in this sort of delicate medical issues real life things into it when you can have a supernatural equivalent that is free to serve the narrative without claiming to be mimic something it isn't. The number of older generation people I know in real life who wouldn't go to therapy because they think of it as its shown in media is frankly a bit scary. Not to say any of this is done with bad intentions from the story writers, far for it, but it's certainly a good thing to discuss how we portray people and services that are crucial for people to feel safe about going to for help.

I just commented under a different video of yours, that I like you better than Cinema Therapy, but I couldn't tell why. I think I figured it out now. This isn't just a convenient and fun niche for you, you guys actually understand why stories and psychology fit so well together. And that shows in a much more balanced discussion. A lot of what you talk about here, are also the reasons why I love love ttrpgs so much. Do you have any experience with that as well? And if so, have you considered adding actual plays into the pool of your subject matter? One that really gripped me emotionally was Critical Roles "Exandria unlimited: Calamity", but there are also some great more obscure groups, like Dork Tales and LA by night, that offer great material to work with. Josephine from Dork Tales "the devil and the dove" campaign would fit very well for the topic of identity and how the stories we tell ourselves shape the experiences we have, I think. (Edit: just watched your second video, that answered most of this.) And on a side note: I am a very rational person. And I am terrible indecisive, so that checks out. ^^

I'm not a qualified mental health expert at all, but I've found that the lack of introspection that highly intelligent people have is a result of ego and the fear of failure. Smart people tend be used to being good at things naturally to the point that they actively avoid things that they might be bad at to avoid failing at it. As a result they avoid introspection because it's unfamiliar and difficult.

i think the writers did understand that pulling apart someone on the first session is not at all useful because it purposefully shows us the whole “i fear i hope” part at the start, because she’s meeting the family at their level, but then she bumps it up to 11 for rick alone. it also makes us think that maybe rick was right, and this was just a waste of time and she’s just not good at her job, before she shows she’s actually as competent at her job as rick is at science and invention

Your channel feels like a designer version of Cinema Therapy. I can't quite put my finger on why I like you better, though. Please don't go squandering your integrity with dubious collaborations and sponsorships like they did. I want more of this. I have actually had real live therapists telling me what I felt. It was in a diagnostic setting rather than treatment, so they were supposed give their opinion on my state of mind, but I think that might have made it even worse. I felt so belittled and talked down to. Plus it really ruined my confidence in the diagnosis they wanted to give me. I am avoiding people because they are exhausting, not scary. I am not lacking motivation, I don't have the energy to do anything and if I force myself to do something it makes it worse. Yeah, I am just to alexithymic to know the difference. Can we than, maybe, address the possibility, that this "depression" is actually autistic burnout? No? Why? Oh, you just don't see that in me. And because you said that with such confidence I am just gonna take your word for it, without any cohesive explanation. Sure. So yeah, being on the nose and telling clients what they feel is exactly what a bad therapist would say, in my experience. Which leads me to another point. I don't think the narrative short hand for therapist is going to work for much longer, with therapy being less and less stigmatized and more and more people making their own experiences with therapists. I for one have definitely noticed that I find it quite immersion breaking, when the stereotypical therapist is portrayed in pop culture and presented as a good or even amazing therapist. In general I think stereotypes can be really useful, but they are super tricky to get right.

As a therapist, I agree that the best depiction of a therapist (and one I modeled myself off of) was Robin Williams in Good Will Hunting (just with less choking). The thing that makes him such a fantastic example is he expressed unconditional positive regard perfectly, and he also isn't perfect himself. He is a flawed man (as therapists are, we are flawed), but he genuinely expresses the concepts of Rogers and Moustakas to the letter, and I even appreciate that they made him vulnerable enough to risk sacrificing his license when his own trauma and grief from his deceased wife comes in and he lashes out. Rarely have I met a therapist colleague who doesn't look at Good Will Hunting as their favorite representation.

Great way to put it. I think part of why I love the depiction is that rogerian relationship that they forge, and the demonstration of how true person-to-person contact is so valuable in facilitating healing ❤️

I think the core of the issue is that, the typical role of the TV therapist is to identify a character flaw or problem and also fail to solve it, so the main character can go through their arc and solve their problem in their own way. There is always some tension that makes the main character reject the counsel of the therapist, since it would be a bit boring or anticlimactic seeing someone actually work out their problems while sitting down and talking for an hour.

Not just what you said about the "warrior", but to add, to be brave is to have courage: being scared but doing it anyway. You can't have courage without fear. In this fight, Usopp was a brave warrior of the sea, fiercely defending one of his beliefs. In the over 1000! Chapters Usopp is the Only crew member to challenge Luffy to a duel. Although, Usopp was acting on insecurities and fears.
