I think the crazy thing about Avatar is that when you ask about the best written character you have to be specific, because depending on the criteria, multiple characters could be considered the best, especially if you are comparing them to other characters that fit their archetype. For example, Zuko might be the best written redemption arc in media, a similar argument could be made about Iroh as the best mentor in media, and Toph not only as a well written charcter, but as representation done right.

As a blind woman who grew up with ATLA and has been blind since birth (appreciate the details about Katara and Sokka's expressions because until 2020 when Netflix provided audio description of the visuals, I gleaned bits about this show from the internet and a few people willing to describe the main action but otherwise was solely an auditory fan), Toph's blind jokes made me feel so seen, pun absolutely intended. Making light of my disability, which I'd done pre Toph, has been a great way of not only showing people I don't see it as a hindrance except under certain circumstances, but cuts through so much of the first meeting unease, and (as in the show) is a wonderful way to remind people the world is made for sighted people and therefore "over here" isn't actually a direction no matter how often you say it. Beautifully indepth work as a writer and psychology dabbelr.

I just wanted to say, that even if you guys don't see this comment, the way you shared your personal story of why you connected to Zuko specifically really was very moving. I relate to him from different circumstances, but I relate to him for very similar reasons. I'm so sorry for the pain you feel/felt and I relate to him in similar ways. I'm so sorry you went through something so painful. The fact that you are willing to be so vulnerable is really impactful, and it was very moving. I think what you guys are doing by exploring mental health through story-telling is going to help a lot of people and it at least made a difference to me. Keep doing what you're doing, I can't wait to see what you guys do next. Content like this has been meaningful to me and I'm sure it will be the same for many others.

This is by far one of the best ATLA discussion videos I have seen so far. (And I have actively looked for most of them) How you guys started the video simply trying to explain how and why this show is amazing and how most of the characters have depth and are relatable, and then just organically leading the conversation to a more vulnerable and emotional level on how you relate to them personally. I have watched this show too many times to count and it has 100% shaped me into the person I am today. It's amazing to see videos like this that enable guys to actually show emotion and feelings. I have watched a few of your videos already but didn't realize I wasn't subscribed. That has been fixed today. Thank you for this amazing video and I will probably have to watch it again to retain more of the information shared.

Toph is what happens is when you put all the things she is on a board, and ask yourself what that person would be. I feel like a lot of "strong woman characters" are what happens when you are trying to focus test a role model for little girls or whatever and forget to make them people. Toph feels like a person, she feels real in a way that, say, Wonder Woman doesn't. They're not asking "who is a strong girl character," they're asking "who is Toph?" and that is a hugely different question in ways many people don't seem to get

Also just wanna say from a teaching standpoint, iroh is fantastic. Iroh is Consistent, nurturing, caring and patient. Obviously he loves zuko and wants the best for him but even in tales of bos sing sei he's teaching the baby how to self soothe, the kids how to play and the adult how to fight properly and influence him to start the career he always wanted. The only time iroh raised his voice at zuko was when zuko tried to take Appa, which iroh knew would have terrible consequences not just on aang but to zuko. (This scene was brilliant foreshadowing as in season 3 we see zuko really unhappy after he got his father's approval.) "What do *you* want to do?" That scene gives me chills every time, especially after watching it all back and seeing the foreshadowing get played in real time. Even when he talks to the rest of team aang, his advice was never patronising or condescending. He always spoke to them like equals not children. a lot of kids appreciate how you talk and explain things compared to the ones that would shout or treat them like babies.

I have been writing a story myself and I try my best to find those moments that really impact people and what they like to see in terms of story telling. This was a perfect reflection and helped put into words exactly what i love about Avatar the Last Airbender. Additionally, talking about your personal story and the connection with Zuko... firstly, sorry you went throug that pain, but this is what i mean by wanting to connect with people through storytelling. Unfortunately, we will all experience unpleasant things in life (personally I find those moments also important for us), but to see, hear, or read others fictional or not go through similar things is quite comforting and helpful for processing those emotions. I also went through a break up, and also came to the conclusion that the anger I felt wasnt so much that that person had disrespected me so much but toward myself for allowing it to happen. I watched this show many times, first time when it aired...but it hits different each time as I experience life and relate more to different characters. I really enjoyed your guys's discussion and it has helped inspire me as well.

I come from the ATLA Live Action video. I just wanted to say that how you both present your arguments and opinions is really refreshing and also i love your calm vibes. I only can attest to your takes on what makes these characters so well written. Only thing I can contradict here would be that as an Art Histrorian that loves story-telling and is a leftist... I LOVE love Toph and all she stands for. She IS my blueprint on how to be a really cool person. I grew up with ATLA so I really think these characters informed my view on how to exist in this world and she definitely showed me how cool and normal people are with or without (maybe even BECAUSE) of their disabilities. She's what we feminists would think a real strong girl/woman is like: Complex, human and badass✨ What Hollywood thinks is "strong and emulatable" is just what (let's be honest here for a sec) MEN in higher positions and executive positions think people want these woman characters to be. But we know how male gaze is structured. These hollywood strong female characters are just a half-hearted attempt at writing heroes (men) with tits. And that is just the sad part. One of the reasons i gave up watching Hollywood all-together. They do only re-heated old stuff and/or only have bad takes that do a disservice to all in dumbing everything down and making one dimensional characters and stories.
@FrameOfMindBrosАй бұрын
Thank you so much! And I appreciate the take 😊. I think thats one of the amazing things about good characters: they transcend individual worldview. When people left and right resonate with a character, you know you've gotten to something deeper than any political divide, your speaking to people at the very core of their being ❤️

Love your content and will be following your work! I was shocked and expected to see more 0s at the end of your subscriber/viewer count especially given the high quality of this video. Commenting to just drop a small observation that perhaps is already addressed in future videos in production, but as this video is over 2 hours long, I have treated it as a podcast and played it in the background while working on other chores. As such, I am not physically at my device to manually adjust the audio levels and had them set to match the start of the video (nice and loud, level with the video clip audio), which is noticeably louder than some of the emotional segments (for example 1:46:00 or thereabouts) which were basically inaudible, given the medium in which I was listening to this content (no headphones, background noise while doing chores). This is something that could be fixed in post reasonably easily or monitored while recording (a little harder). Thanks again for the great video!

Thanks torchide! 🙏🏻 Yeah Jordan here, and I’m the one who did the editing so I really appreciate the feedback. I knew the audio wasn’t perfect but hearing how it interrupted your experience will make me put more time into it next episode 🙏🏻 sadly there’s been some technical problems which made the audio editing a nightmare so hopefully we can clean that up in future episodes. And if more people subscribe and watch my dream is to hire an audio engineer / mixer to make sure the audio is perfect every time 👌🏻 but your feedback is super appreciated and we’re gonna try to make sure it doesn’t happen again 🫡

@@FrameOfMindBros it makes sense especially for aang who's had his entire race genocide, there's surviver's guilt, and the shame of burning katara, what he's capable of when he goes into the avatar state, even tho he was raised to be a pacifist, the pressure of needing to save the world. That's a lot of feelings to take on even for an adult nevermind a 12 yr old boy. The fact he chooses to be happy, silly and playful in spite of this says a lot about his strength of character.
@halfblood100Ай бұрын
Zuko almost didn't exist in the story. The main visual antagonist was going to be General Zhao until very close to the start of actually creating the first episode. Not right before, but for writing a new character, it was quick. Avatar also doesn't have a clear main protagonist. The first time watching it, I viewed Katara and Zuko as the characters whose development was focused on the most. I saw Katara as the main character and the person whose point of view the show uses the most in the main group. After rewatching this so much, I realized that this is a group of protagonists. Aang is not the protagonist, he is the "Hero" but not the sole protagonist. I think that is one of the things that make this show work so well, there isn't one protagonist or one person who we view the story through.

I'm only about 30 minutes in but I just want to say i already love this podcast! Youre both so eloquent and hearing two people who evidently are so knowledgeable about the nuances and details of good storytelling is incredible. Just adding in my two cents on Avatar characters, not sure if you touch on this or not but Appa and Momo are some of the best written animal characters in anything ever. Especially Appa, i love how they gave him not only the purpose of being transportation but a real emotional character that has experienced loss and trauma but also love and family despite no real dialogue. Appa's Lost Days is such a prime example of how good character writing and show-don't-tell can go hand in hand! (Edit: I would absolutely love an episode on Guru Pathik especially from a mental health POV!!! that episode has always really resonated with me and I'd love to hear your take on it 😊)

I started watching ATLA for Aang, but I kept watching for Katara and Zuko and Sokka and Toph. 🤷🏽♀️ It’s amazing how ultimately it’s not Aang (the protagonist) that ends up being the most interesting and relatable character for audiences to root for… and I think it’s because Aang doesn’t get much personal growth in comparison to other characters. Aang started out as a kid running away from his friends and unable to change his behavior and way of life because he was bound to his people’s principles and he expected the war-torn world to instead bend over backwards for him as the Avatar. In the finale, he still ran away from his friends, refused to listen to his past lives and unsure of how to handle a world-changing problem in the moment of truth… and it took a lion-turtle and a rock to the back to get Aang to win the battle. He never really learned anything or compromised his character to adapt to the new world… and that’s why Aang’s arc doesn’t really stick with me.
