*SPOILERS* . . . . . . .The boys in the attic were memories from Ted’s childhood and the little boys who were stolen from the lake, I believe. He said at one point he thought the mother must have mistaken Lulu for a boy because she only took boys.

Great review. Race and class run through every scene in the book in many expected and unexpected ways, adding tension and drama. How can people say the book was boring? Maybe they just missed all that? At any rate, three years later, I just read the book and searched out reviews. Yours was the most nuanced and thoughtful one I came across. Thank you!

Thank you for your review. I love you vibe! I haven't read the book but just watched the movie and found it a frustrating experience. I thought I'd check out a book review to find out what may have been lost in the adaptation. Now I get it. For the movie, they changed the older Black married couple to a younger Black father and daughter. A lot of the talk has been about Julia Robert's character Amanda being racist in her attitude toward the Black family. But honestly, I would have been just as suspicious the way they depicted it in the movie. A 40-something man with a 20-something daughter could easily be con artists pretending to be father and daughter. Especially when they show up in the middle of the night with the wi-fi and internet conveniently down so they can't verify anything AND with no ID! However, with an older married couple, it's far more plausible that they would really own the house. I wish they hadn't made that switch because would have loved an older Black woman's perspective, plus Myha'la as the daughter was every bit as rude and unlikable as Amanda. It seems they changed the character just to add unnecessary sexual tension with her and the other males. I also didn't quite understand the class differences, so thanks for clearing that up. I doubt I'll read the book because I've heard to many things about the grocery lists that go on for pages, but your review was delightful and insightful!

Yeah. It became clear 5 minutes after they show up that its their house. Julia Roberts waa annoying the shit out of me. Not just by her racism, but wirh her lack of questions that could have cleared things up

damn I was not engaging enough with this book, you brought up so many good points that I definitely missed. i know im like 3 years late to the discussion but would love to hear ppls throughts on the sex scenes... maybe im just a prude, but it felt graphic for a non-smut book.

Hi Katrina, Idk if you'll ever see this, but I just wanted to tell you something. Recently, I gathered the courage to finally leave a high control group. Back when you were putting up a lot of videos, you would occasionally mention your "fundy days". Just wanted to let you know, that had an impact on me. Seeing someone who escaped that kind of thing gave me heart. Well, just wanted to say thank you for that. Hope you and your family are well!

I really appreciate you review, I would love to have a discussion with you on your view. It’s seem very interesting, I just want a better understanding of it. Because myself, an asain male. I did grow up in the inner city, around most African American and Latino, then moved to the suburbs once I got older. I have seen both side the fence.

Your take was so insightful and helpful. I was more educated by this book in relation to my own class biases than I can ever express. It was an excellent lens to view my own shortcomings and continue to listen and broaden my views from outside of my own lived experiences. This book was a phenomenal read and I’m fascinated by those who could read it at “face value” and be angry with the ending. Literary piece (not thriller) was the best description of the book I’ve heard. Thank you for your thoughts!!!!

“White people feel entitled to things, and entertainment, etc.” “Oh they never brought me a fruit basket” lmfao. It’s honestly so insane how you guys can sit and talk about what white people don’t have to do. Do you honestly think we don’t have to be on guard around other cultures as well? You believe black people cant be dangerous on many levels to NUMEROUS other races? It’s not a secret. The sheer victimhood of todays black culture is next level. Dog whistles lol. And weirdly, black people have moved past dog whistles straight to anti white hate and outward disdain and volatility.

I'm VERY late to the party, but I finally just read this book, and went searching for reviews online. I really liked it overall, but agree with many of your criticisms. I loved your perspective on this, and I thank you for the emotional labor put forth in sharing your own struggles with mental health.

Caught up in a moment of boyhood competition, William Bellman recklessly aims his slingshot at a rook resting on a branch. Don't we all have a story like this, our memories banks have a lot to say about sling-shots.

I can understand why people have a love hate relationship with this book. Why so many either DNF by the 25% mark or hate the book by the 60% mark. This author took some really serious gambles and risks. I was glad I read it with the audio. I think a reader could get really lost very quickly. Btw kudos to the narrator for doing all the voices. I can imagine it was difficult text to interpret. The one thing I will say is that this should have come with trigger warnings. 4.5 stars from me.

Enjoyed your thoughts. I just finished this one and my mind is reeling. The book was a puzzle and quite disordered, and felt confused for nearly the entirety, but I think the author accomplished all of this for effect and the purpose of the book. Your review helped to clarify some things. Thanks!

🤯 Thank you for this wonderful review! Apart from yours I've only encountered one other review (by the lovely Jen Campbell) that got that the book first and foremost is an exploration of racial dynamics and actually appreciated this book ✨ It's so disheartening that, as you said, the reviews of the book mirror what it tries to dismantle. Glad I stumbled upon you today 😊

Two years late lol but I just finished reading this book! And I’m so happy I came across your review. I didn’t particularly like the book because I went in relatively blind and only had the notion that it was about the end of the world, so I was expecting something completely different, but now I understand that was a me issue. I think if I knew that the story was going to be more about the dynamics between two families, I would of went in with a different mind. But I loved your review and I agree 100%, thanks for pointing out small things/details that I missed and giving your perspective! makes me wish I went into the book knowing what it was going to be about a little bit!
